Dhaka proposes Delhi use of non-lethal weapons for border guards

Posted by Bright on Jun 10th, 2010 // No Comment

Bangladesh has sent a proposal to India seeking that border guards of the countries ought to make use of non-lethal weapons, in lieu of deadly firearms as carried by them now, to keep away from civilian casualties in the border.

‘We have proposed use of non-lethal weapons to India in maintaining border security so that no one dies from gunshots… India is thinking about our proposal with importance,’ the home secretary, Abdus Sobhan Sikder, told New Age on Wednesday.

India has already warned its Border Security Force against such border killing saying it would show a zero tolerance towards such incidents in future, according to the secretary.

Bangladesh has taken up the issue of border killing with the Indian authorities several times earlier.

The home affairs ministry has recently worked out a way on how border guards ought to operate without deadly weapons & the mode has been sent to India in a follow-up to the bilateral talks in the coursework of the visit of the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, to New Delhi in January 2010.

‘We have proposed a mode for border operation with option for arrests without shooting at somebody in bordering areas to keep order,’ Sikder said, adding that Dhaka was now waiting for New Delhi’s response to the proposal.

In March, the matter was discussed between the directors general of the Border Security Force & the Bangladesh Rifles in New Delhi.

No casualty has so far been reported after the imposition of restrictions on nighttime movement of people in the border in recent times, according to the officials concerned.

All deputy commissioners in bordering districts have been asked to document to the home ministry on execution of the restrictions & overall border situation at an early date, the officials said.

The government on May 16 imposed restrictions on nighttime movement of people in border areas to keep away from Bangladeshis being killed by India’s Border Security Force & check cross-border smuggling.

The Indian guards have reportedly killed over 900 Bangladeshis in a decade & most of the shootings usually took place at night.

Why the hell you are telling us that we go to your impoverished land for a living? Just stay away from this thread or write objectively, do you understand?

So you mean the value of an indian job/money is worth a bengali life?

Fence the border and electrify the fence ...there will be no need for use of weapons.

And how do you hope to achieve this....?

It was a simple proposal NOT to use "lethal weapons"......does not imply that the forces cant use any weapons at all......

Ok let see what the problem is..

India does not want illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

It wants the cross border smuggling to stop.

It wants to stop the ISI backed militants, from crossing over into Indian territory or local militants to cross over into Bangladeshi territory.

Now Bangladesh wants end to illegal BSF enroachment.

It want BSF to stop shooting its civilians.

It wants BSF to stop steeling Bangladeshi FISH :woot:

Hence fence the border and both our problems are solved...neither BSF will be able to enter into Bangladesh, nor illegal immigrants will be able to cross over...what say??

Any proposal that will lead to inoocents not getting killed is welcome.

However the smuggling problem - of material and people is a real one. Its no coincidence that most of the killings have happened at night time, not to say incocent people have not died, i just don't know that.

Secondly, if smugglers know the BSF is carrying non lethal weapons, that will lead to other operational issues too, not an easy one to implement.

I don't understand, what non lethal weapons are being referred too??...Should BSF run after the smugglers with lathis ??

Oh just shoot the b&*****s. They have no business entering our territory illegally anyway

Grow up and debate properly....

Try to applaud a good proposal which encourages less casualties....remember the "b&*****s" you killed contains a large proportion of innocent people too....dudh ka dhula huya nahi hain tumhara BSF....

Killing is never the answer....argue about the topic's good/bad sides and dont act uncivilized....

^^
If your good proposal means more illegal migrants in India then I reject your proposal downright.

Had I been an illegal migrant then I would have certainly applauded that.

And I guess you would take the same approach if thousands of Indians were illegally entering Dhaka from "impoverished" India ?
