What's new

Dhaka overtakes Karachi on "Liveability Index 2022"

So are San Francisco, London or Vancouver, all of which I'm guessing score quite well.

I have a feeling cities also get less point for not having a clubs based, alcohol based nightlife.
Karachi has all of it, still unlivable city

I don't think anyone is enjoying it. We Bangladeshis know very well Dhaka is beyond redemption- it's dirty, chaotic, overpopulated. We need a new Capital city. It's actually shocking to see we are not at the bottom.

I see this comment a lot and simply do not understand it.

A lot of Dhaka's issue is due to centralisation, massive immigration and poor transport infrastructure.

1. Infrastructure will be sorted by 2035 when RSTP 2016-2035 is complete with metro lines, rapid bus transport, expressways and bypass roads all built.

2. Centralisation - As infrastructure improves and rise of technology, then there is little need for everything to be in Dhaka. Already the SEZs and IT Parks are being spread all over the country and this will have the effect of slowing the rise and eventually reducing Dhaka's population. BD population itself is expected to peak in 2050(200 million) and then go into slow decline to 2100(150 million).

3. Immigration - See above and this will naturally first reduce and then actually go into reverse.

Like I mentioned already, as Dhaka's infrastructure improves with greater relativity compared to others in the bottom 10, expect in a few years for it to move totally out of the bottom 10.

This is a classic case of pot calling the kettle black !

Damn when Karachi becomes even worse than Dhaka, who could have thought?
it makes you realize what they have done to the beautiful city - PPP, MQM, establishment all are responsible

You know the city, it was the most devaloped just couple decades ago

Now even peshwar, Sialkot and other mid tier cities are beating it hands down forget other big cities

This is so depressing

Don't believe everything you see on the Internet. Visit Dhaka sometime and you will see. Or ask brother @iLION12345_1

I suspect if they there was India would be exposed with all the filth and overcrowding. Thus until Modi does a make ove of India New Delhi will block Google and I believe it has blocked Google despite attempts.
The official reason is that it was rejected for security reasons. I doubt it is possible to prevent an image of country being broadcast to the world with a gazillion Youtubers and Instagrammers crawling the streets. When goras visit India, they visit the crappiest of places and there is no stopping this image from being broadcast.

Karachi still has a big lead on infrastructure but as Dhaka is building its infrastructure from such a low base, it should be well ahead of Karachi by the end of this decade in this index.

Not only this, in the next decade or so, Dhaka will become comparable to well established cities such Singapore, etc. I am afraid Karachi will become more of a 3rd grade city comparable to some city in Somalia.

There are plenty of Banglas and Biharis in Karachi so there is no differance other than climate. Karachi is not a 'city' in the traditional sense. It's just a huge refuge with 'camps' spread out clustered along ethnic lines. Almost everybody is from somewhere else - India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Punjab, KPK etc.

What do you suggest? Should they all leave or what?

Karachi, Lahore, Dhaka, other cities in South Asia need Piazza's and Squares as found in many European countries, these open areas with multi use functions can make a huge impact on the 'culturally inviting' aspect, openess and liveable thing.

BTW, beating Karachi is very simple. Even an African city of most backward type can beat karachi in every aspect of development, because this city is governed by those who actually hate it.
Beating other cities of Pakistan is however hard.

Not gonna happen Sir. We have a mindset of scarcity since our bhikari days of the British Raj. Jab bhi hamein kuch milta hai, hum uss ko nichod lena chahtay hain till the last drop, whether it is sugarcane or land. If at all some free space is left, it will always be in upscale neighbourhoods. You really think some developer is going to leave this much of land in a poor settlement? Nope, unless this plaza can be dotted with Starbucks, MCDs of the world for upper middle class, no one going to leave such space. We have no such concept.

.
Karachi recently has seen some pedestrian zones which were earlier unused or was a road with parked cars. Here an underground parking is provided and the upper level is converted into a pedestrian area.

This is near old burns garden, adjacent to Arts council.

I think 2035 will be a good date to pencil in.

The Japanese drafted RSTP 2016-2035 40 billion US dollar transport plan to build the metro lines, rapid bus transport, expressways and bypass roads should be complete by then.

Also the majority if not all the slums will be cleared by then.

Singapore is too much to hope for but something in the middle between what Dhaka and Singapore is now is realistic by then.
