What's new

Dhaka more expensive than many South Asian cities: EIU

Newer planned suburbs of Dhaka will be far larger in scale than whatever Newtown in Kolkata will ever be

Few cherry picked 'glamshots' (if you can call them that @Bombaywalla) proves nothing about one of the world's least livable cities...

If Dhaka had well planned areas with proper infrastructure which occupies areas of several 'new towns', how would it score the lowest score for infrastructure among 10 least livable cities?

Again, how would Dhaka have an average speed of 7 km per hour if it was so 'well-planned'?

Hilarious!

Also note that most of his glamshots are taken at night- we imagine what this looks like can during the day

You are comparing a capital of a sovereign nation with a regional city. It's an unfair comparison.

How does that even matter ? There is nothing special about being capital of 'Bangladesh'.

@SOUTHie Residential projects in our very own Thrissur looks as good if not better than Billu's apartments here, don't you think ?

We are talking about Kolkata....not thrissur or some irrelevant hamlet in the South....just bugger off...

And stop the d*ck measuring - have some shame. Bangladesh has half the GDP and one eighth the size compared to the stupid excuse of a country you have and is still better in many ways...

The point is your 'showcase projects' wouldn't look out of place in a 'hamlet down south'....

So know your place, BD troll

And stop boasting about this...

We have all been to Kolkata - mairi bolcchee!!

Dude WTF ?! Kolkata has its charms but c'mon, stop this d*ck measuring.

Have you EVER been to Dhaka?:lol:

Here's a few shots to whet your appetite, these are mostly older suburbs of Dhaka dating from the 1950's except the first few shots. Newer planned suburbs of Dhaka will be far larger in scale than whatever Newtown in Kolkata will ever be. But that doesn't diminish our love for Kolkata, it is what it is, warts and all. You obviously don't hang out in architecture or urban development circles.

Stop posting drone shots, time lapse shots, or gated communities...Can you post ground level videos of public spaces in Dhaka, that would give a better understanding of the level of development.

One of my stomping grounds during my early years,

Highway and public transport, North Dhaka

Cantonment Area

And one of the world's largest parliament building and legislative complexes (200 acres) commissioned for a Muslim country designed by one of the world's greatest architects (Louis I. Kahn)...

Are these the best areas of Dhaka? Looks similar to many tier 3 Indian cities but definitely not comparable to Kolkata.

Dhaka's aim right now should be to compete with tier 3 cities of India that are on their way to become smart cities. Baby steps please.

 Says the guy who lives in future...sometimes in 2030, 2035 at some other...

Still spewing the same BS ?

OK. Let us try to have a discussion without resorting to insults. I know that Kolkata is ahead of Dhaka by a long way now in terms of transport infrastructure.

http://www.theindependentbd.com/post/123273

$ 2bn-elevated expressway project eyes to ease traffic around Dhaka

"The main objective of the 39.24-km long East-West Elevated Expressway Project is to reduce traffic congestions in and around Dhaka city,” said a Bridges Division official."

This will allow traffic that does not need to go into Dhaka to bypass it completely and will link up with the 3 circular ring roads that will surround Dhaka.

It is all part of the 2016-2035 Master Plan to allow Dhaka to have a fast and very efficient transport infrastructure.

Do you know how much a similar project like this will cost in India?

Still waiting for a few videos of tier 1 Calcutta. :-)

No renders, future plans, images or other BS. Actual stuff on the ground. Don't bring in other cities into the discussion.

I showed you some areas of Dhaka. Now Calcutta please.

The way they compare their backwater cities like Kolkata with Dhaka, makes even India's Supa Pawa dreams to be less funnier.

OK Dada.

If this is the extent of Calcutta - then I have no words. You have a few new buildings built because of IT boom.

Long live Trinamool and Mamta-behen!

Calcutta is mostly the same dump its always been.

Because of IT back-office work they built a few new buildings in Newtown and toward the airport hence the chest thumping began. But these are our Bengali co-linguists, so let them do it.

They never had independence in their blood.

Lackeys of the Mughals, then the British, and now Banyas from Maharashtra and Gujarat.

They even had Banyas dictate a 'no-hiring of Bengalis in Kolkata' policy for IT shops and they meekly agreed.

Kinda sad though to see this tragic change of fate of these people. Once one of the wealthiest provinces of British India, now one of the poorest provinces of Independent India.

As usual you have Billu alleging conspiracy.....I challenge you to provide one proof for such a 'policy'.

They never had independence in their blood.

They should have won independence and should have evolved into an LDC...

Calcutta is mostly the same dump its always been.

Dhaka is becoming a worser dump day by day...

Think about having an average speed of 6.4 kph, 55% of population living in slums and floods on top of that.

There is little wonder why it was ranked the second least livable city in the world...

Because of IT back-office work they built a few new buildings in Newtown and toward the airport

Says a guy who even started a thread for posting cherry-picked photos of a few midrises from the world's least livable cities...Ah, the irony.

The way they compare their backwater cities like Kolkata with Dhaka

That's right... No city ever should be compared to the least livable dump called Dhaka. Its an insult.

Their own doing I'd say. Anti-industrialist stance of the communist govt.

The side effect is that Calcutta itself is a whole lot cleaner these days. No industry in the city.

But the payback is coming and can happen at any moment. Intellectual capital-based service jobs which they have now is fleeting and can move at a moment's whim if a lower cost location can be found within India (say Bhubaneswar or cities in UP).

Not so with capital machinery-based industry like what we have in Dhaka and environs.
