Development update: Shanghai in 2017 by DJI drone

Shanghai and other first tier cities are not developed yet or finished development in the eyes of planners and strategists, it will be in the phase of development for many more decades.

Those that understand the vision and depth of the issue will understand why Chinese find certain developing countries touting they will become a developed nation in 10-30 years very comical. Perhaps there a difference in definition of "developed" but your standards determine your potential. Some countries may be complacent with Shanghai or China's over all development but Chinese are not.

China's development outline
2013-2016: Mobilization of society, raise public awareness of initiative, coordinate and restructure national resources to prepare for development
2016: Begin planning of national rejuvenation/development
2020: End extreme poverty, GDP reach $10,000, establish joint military command, military motorization complete
2021: Moderately well-off/prosperous 小康社会, finish basic planning of national rejuvenation and begin development (Begin primary development phase)
2025: Raise critical industrial components to 70% made in China. (Primary development phase)
2030: Complete urbanization at 70% urbanized (Primary development phase)
2035: Basically modernized, industrial base is complete and modern, world leader in science, technology, economy, and business, military fully modernized (Primary development phase)
2049: Ends primary development and becomes moderately developed, enters top 40 developed nations, world leading military, realise national rejuvenation (Begins moderate development phase)
2080: Becomes a developed country
2100: Top 10 developed nations

China is not developed and has only solved basic needs of its people. What is considered development in the grand vision hasn't started. Only a few major projects are initiated or revealed, and only started its planning. China knows its backwards and far from success. What China is doing, including very inefficient activities is to build up/prepare the society's functions for the century long development drive. There are critics saying OBOR is failing due to X,Y,Z but the development hasn't started. Testing is just beginning, issues in testing is normal, the real project will take 1-2 centuries to complete. Have dreams but be patient and realistic.

Very impressive summation of the long-term vision of the world's most pragmatist and scientific government.

I definitely agree that standards define the potentials; in this case, low standards may mean titles such as SP2012 may be achieved relatively easily.

I guess we need to remind ourselves not to fall into a similar self-aggrandizing trap and by aiming for meager achievements. Because the developed world will not tolerate or sympathize with those that lag or fall behind.

I think China knows by heart that it is a brutal world out there and if we fall, they will once again gather to prey on us. Never again.

China is TOO BIG. It has 20% of world's population. Once China is developed then they will become TOO STRONG & TOO DOMINANT. No wonder US, Japs, & The West exert every effort to contain China. So stay alert and be careful China.

Shanghai Metro 2017

this so-called Shanghai Metro 2017 map will have a significant update soon. Because three new metro lines: Line 17, Line 9 Phase III and Line 8 Phase III, will be added to the network and start the operation in a few weeks.

World's longest metro system is continuing its expansion!

That is some great landscaping and planning
It's not just about planning. It is easy to have some superb planning that on paper. But the most difficult job is to bring the paper planning to come true.

Here is just one tiny example from Shanghai. A flyover & viaduct (built in a location that ~20km away to the city center) in Shanghai. Four satellite images for the same location, taken in Apr. 2009, Dec. 2009, Feb. 2010 and Aug. 2010 respectively.

In the first image, the Apr. 2009 one, we could not recognize anything that looks alike to flyover or viaduct;
Apr. 2009.jpg

The 2nd image, taken in Dec. 2009, we see the form of the flyover & viaduct emerged suddenly!
Dec. 2009.jpg

the next image, taken in Feb. 2010, the flyover & viaduct almost completed.
(FYI: Feb. is the time for Chinese new year, therefore this image actually reflected the status of Jan. 2010)
Feb. 2010.jpg

The Aug. 2010 image, the flyover & viaduct was already put in use, we could see cars on top of the structure.
Aug. 2010.jpg

So, in about 12-months time, we see the flyover+viaduct completed. And the building process even not stops the normal operation of the vertical roads (you can see vehicles passing through the vertical roads in all the four images. ). And such example is actually happening in every corner of Chinese cities, large or small.

BTW, below is the picture of the exact localization today.

I heard that the plan to connect HSR with Pudong international airport was stalled. It is pretty inconvenient for oversea travelers to change to domestic trains.

. . .
Very impressive. I hope to visit Shanghai one day.
