CPC proposes change on Chinese president's term in Constitution

Why bother with so much uncertainty? Just extend the term limit from 2 to 3. Will calm the nerves. It's not like the sky is falling.

Fair enough, brother. I want to add that I don't want Xi to rule until he dies (like Mao or even Deng), but I do think he needs a third term to ensure that necessary reforms are enacted, the BRI has good momentum, the military is cleaned of corruption and strengthened, etc.

I will admit, this news makes me somewhat nervous as well. Having this much power concentrated into the hands of one man carries the potential for harm, even if that man is a saint. But I believe Xi is well-intentioned, and if this amendment is so opposed by the Chinese people then it wouldn't pass, since the instability it would cause would defeat its purpose.

But I sincerely believe that China needs single-minded, undivided leadership for at least the next decade.

I believe every Chinese want the best for China, corruption is indeed a disease of the nation, to fight the corruption need a commitment not just one powerful man but all government staff and people to support.

Why bother with so much uncertainty? Just extend the term limit from 2 to 3. Will calm the nerves. It's not like the sky is falling.

You can keep such advise for Modi. we Chinese sure know how to do thing on our way.

If you have a good leader in office, then it'll be okay to extend the 2 term limit. It's not like he or she will be in office forever, there are laws that prohibit that. So far, Xi is a good leader and has helped China progress so much in economy, military and standard of living. Another term is not a big deal. The Chinese government is helping the country unlike other leaders that only want to benefit off the country.

Trying to compress centuries of development in a few decades is far more fraught with peril for China than WWII was for America. Getting China's modernization wrong is an existential threat, while WWII was never an existential threat to America.

Wow. I have to say, I find people's reaction shocking.

Since America's system doesn't have this problem - it never delivers no matter how competitive the elections - I guess Americans have "sucked it up" until "it" collapsed into a black hole.
US has the same problem, though to a less extent, as the political left successfullysuccessful stifling different opinions and dominating in media, academics and education. US is just another socialistic country in the making.

. . . . .
if I would propose a change, I would suggest a single 10-year term with an optional 5-year one-time extension, via application/approval by congress. let's drop the pretension of mimicking dual-term policy with an open acknowledgement that having leader too old is a bad idea.

Hmmmm, not a fan at all. However I'll reserve my final judgement for a few years to see whats really going on. I also found it hilarious that Indian are up in arms as if China is going to collapse tmr, maybe focus on fixing up your your country first before talk

FWIW I don't think China is going to 'collapse' tomorrow.

No matter how Xi will save China from corruption, he will set a bad example for future all Leaders, other might not use necessary to corruption as excuse to extend their power, not thing more easier than to find an excuse to justify their legitimacy claim. Governing a nation, you need to have a solid foundation of unshaken rules and laws to stabilize a country, if everyone can overwrite the law than you will expect a total chaos.
Xi is good, let him stay. He is taking responsibility for his country.

If you wanna do something serious, 10 years is not enough.

Xi wants to stay in power, but it is not for the sake of staying in power. He has a much bigger agenda for the nation of China, which can't be achieved without a strong leader with the consolidated power. Don't let your views of China be swayed by the dominance of Western discourse, as the "2-term limit" is just as artificial and arbitrary as the definition of "political correctness".

What he is trying to do is not much different for democratic Turkey's Erdoğan who has been in power since 2003, and yet the whole world was very quiet about Turkey's move in 2014.

The funny thing is now the West suddenly wants to judge a long time "totalitarian commie dictatorship evil" by western good guy's democratic standards. :partay:

I agree with your overall point, but Erdoğan is not a good example to use. Erdoğan is an egomaniac who wants to ram through a retrograde religious agenda. Xi is trying to take China's economy to the next level and clean up its institutions.

China's economy may be one of his top priorities, but the unification of China is definitely his ultimate trophy if he wants to enter into Chinese history book as an equal to Mao and Deng.
