Deep down most West Bengalis don't care about Bangladesh, many don't even know what is Bangladesh. Before joining this forum 3 years ago I was also completely clueless about Bangladesh and Bangladeshis barring the knowledge that they exist.

Our schools don't talk about Bangladesh in junior classes, maybe to avoid certain "Uncomfortable" topics. In a class of mixed religion, what the teacher should say if a young student asks why Bangladesh separated? But it maybe taught in higher secondary and above to those who chose history as a subject.

It's not about history only, if you are from West Bengal you got to learn about Bangladesh studying geography, Bengali literature and others because it's related, unless of course you want to avoid these things.

The correct sequence is: "Students are preferring English medium schools, so Bengali medium schools are in poor shape". Btw, Bengali is one of the two mandatory language papers even in English medium schools.

I didn't study in "Arts' stream, I didn't study history as part of my formal education after 10th standard.

Yes, we somewhat avoid it. Once Sunil Gongopadhyay was asked why he is not writing about the history of undivided Bengal, partition, riots, etc. as a continuation of his work from his legendary literature like "Sei Samay" and "Pratham Alo", he said that it will create communal tensions in the society.

Not only in Bengal, Indian education system has always been 'soft' on the 'communal' part of history and glossed over it. The atrocities committed by certain Islamic rulers like Babur, Aurangzeb, Tipu Sultan, Ghauri are also mostly omitted from the textbooks.

They are refugees legally allowed by Pakistan. India once accepted refugees from Bangladesh and we do have quite a few refugees from Sri Lanka.
