DSI is being added to AMCA and the twin engine carrier fighter. It was studied and found to have benefits to the design. Tejas mark1 airframe will have limited external changes. There's just so much you can do with it.
However, as far as India being competent in making rapid design changes to it's IP, it has already shown it can do that.
It took the base mark 1 model and ruggedized it(added LEVCONs, etc. also) enough to operate on a carrier. Adding something like DSI isnt something it cant do. It has been studied and will be implemented on future models, just not on the mark 1 model.
Not only DSI, but canards will be added to MWF(LCA Mark 2).
With that being said, most of the 5th gen models I've seen from Europe, Turk, Korean, etc. dont have DSI.
