What's new

CNN Reporter Sara Sidner Assaulted on Live TV in Mumbai, INDIA.

what are the rape and harassment status difference between 2008 and 2013 yaar? nothing is changed .

thats my point.... how come "India Rape" is world news in last 6 months,...and it was not back then

I don't know why 2008 is being considered super old... And somehow a reasoning to not post this?

Moreover its not from 2008. If you saw the first video, the same reporter looks older now, is doing a show herself on CNN regarding the recent behavior, she even mentions gang rapes phenomenon so its quite current.

On YT its been posted with yesterdays date.

But all of that is besides the point! Look what happened to her, speak up against it!

People spoke up against it back in 2008. You need to realize these sorta crime is being committed by illiterate folks on the street. Indians here on PDF don't go around groping and raping random reporters/women. So these sorta threads serve no purpose other than to show India in bad light.

If the motive is to speak up against the issue then am all for it, but what irks me is when people start acting sanctimonious and somehow try and imply that its an Indian thing only.

A very similar incident happened in Pakistan in 2007, and in the spirit of speaking up and highlighting the issue am taking the liberty to post it here. Hope I won't be infracted for that.

Attacks of all types, occurring across the world

Jenny Nordberg, a New York-based Swedish correspondent, was in Pakistan in October 2007 to cover the return of Benazir Bhutto, the exiled former prime minister who would be assassinated two months later. During a chaotic procession in Karachi that day, Nordberg became separated from her colleagues and surrounded by a crowd of men who sexually assaulted her. She was freed only after people in a passing truck pulled her to safety. She told CPJ why she chose not to talk about it until now:

“It's embarrassing, and you feel like an idiot saying anything, especially when you are reporting on much, much greater horrors,” Nordberg wrote to CPJ in February. “But it still stays with you. I did not tell the editors for fear of losing assignments. That was definitely part of it. And I just did not want them to think of me as a girl. Especially when I am trying to be equal to, and better than, the boys. I may have told a female editor though, had I had one.”

Without support, Nordberg said, she turned a critical eye on herself.

“I did that whole thing of ‘Um, I was an idiot not to have proper backup, I was maybe not wearing the right thing, etcetera’ Today, when I am older and a little wiser, I know that crowds or riots are incredibly dangerous regardless of what you wear and even if you're surrounded by ex-paratroopers. But I didn't know then, and I was perfectly appropriately dressed, too, by the way. I also did not tell [editors] for fear that they may have any of those same thoughts, ‘Oh, maybe she invited that sort of behavior.’”

Male journalists have also been targeted, typically in situations of captivity or detention. Umar Cheema, a prominent political reporter for Pakistan’s largest English-language newspaper, The News, told CPJ that he was abducted, tortured, and sexually assaulted in an Islamabad suburb in September 2010. “As I was stripped naked and being tortured on the back with my head down totally blindfolded, the ringleader directed one of his fellows to molest me,” Cheema wrote in an email to CPJ, describing how he was sodomized with a wooden pole. “Ten minutes after I was free, I started thinking about what I should do,” he said. “The decision was I had to speak up.” Speaking out, he said, “has made me stronger and made my enemies more cowardly. Their efforts to intimidate me backfired.” Cheema has publicly blamed Pakistan’s powerful Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate for the abduction and subsequent abuse, an assertion the government denies.

The silencing crime: Sexual violence and journalists - Reports - Committee to Protect Journalists

I don't have any issue with discussing the issue like grown ups, but its the "oh look at these disgusting Indians", and people pretending that its only an India specific problem thats hard to deal with.

@Awesome just so you know this video is from 2008. Is it ok for us to now post news which is 5 years old?

And for people who are acting sanctimonious, here's a report.

The silencing crime: Sexual violence and journalists - Reports - Committee to Protect Journalists

The program just aired couple of days back - they showed a video from 2008 in the program. So its not old news its very recent :coffee:

(the host was the woman in the 2008 video, thank God she survived the pack of hyenas)

The incident happened in 2008.

I know it did, they're discussing that and discussing the growing rape epidemic in India as a contemporary issue. An author is being interviewed as well about his new book "India dishonored". Try watching the video it just may help your understanding, its not old news, they just mentioned something that happened in the past.

Any Indian scientist who identifies the 'rape gene' should be awarded the Padmashree award by the GoI.

Joking aside..this is the effect of too much Bollywood (and its equivalents) where they are promoting sex-centrism and traditional values are being despised. I don't think this, in that scale, is only happening in India. In BD (don't know about Pak) I suspect sexual offenses are being under-reported because of the added emphasis on covering and segregation in Islam. A girl and even her family, let alone the society, will tend to believe that she is partly responsible for her victimization and everyone will tend to ignore the fault or twisted mentality of the offender simply because it's not visible.

Lack of women’s safety isn’t just an Indian phenomenon; it holds a global passport.

One of my just-out-of- Boston University Chinese origin ex-colleagues, was planning a skiing trip with some girl friends in a very remote corner of Norway with a guy she just met on a flight. He had told her that he was a skiing instructor and had his own cabin. She was taking him up on his offer on face value.

I wouldn’t have known of this, if I didn’t need to sanction her leave. When I heard her recount excitedly about how she was looking forward to this trip, all I could see were flashes straight out of Eli Roth’s Hotel. I had to help her understand that what she was planning was not only stupid but could potentially put the entire bunch of them in grave danger.

I approved the leave anyway to show her I couldn’t care about being short staffed, but made it very clear that if she and her friends didn’t return from her trip, I didn’t want to have to say ‘I told you so’. She cancelled the approved leave a day later.

The thoughts I want to share are as a woman, who is from India but has travelled a bit of Asia, and knows what RoseChasm, twoseat andAishu88 from CNN ireport are talking about. However, what I would like to point out is that over-sexed men who grope and stare, jerk off or touch you are not restricted to India.

I have been propositioned by strangers passing me in a car, in supermarkets, even on my way to work almost every day in Oman.

I’ve been in a cab in KL where the cab driver started jerking off mid-day, in the best part of the city on the way to one of the hippest malls there, while asking me if my husband and I use a condom while having sex.

I’m not spilling my private thoughts here to incite hate. It is my hope that one can see the global cancer that is corrupting every known culture – and India is not unique in its position as a women molesting country.

As an Indian, I would say the following to my younger sister, and I would say the following to any traveller coming into my country.

1. Don’t be stupid.
Don’t go into public places which are packed and narrow. People are bound to brush against you – they may not intend to, but personal space is not something you can expect while you are in elbowing your way through buzzling markets.

2. Don’t stay in shady hotels/ or visit questionable bars.
Sleazy places are the same world over. Don’t cheap out and expect safety. It’s the same anywhere – Rio, Durban, Bangkok, New York, Mumbai, Amsterdam.

3. Please be modest.
What you see in Bollywood movies with the song and dance is a communal thing. Indians don’t dance in public – on the streets, in the parks or on the roads. Forget that it’s not sane, it’s not safe. Be culturally aware - Rio is not the same as Valencia, nor is Amsterdam the same as Cairo. If one gets too friendly during a local festival, expect them to get friendly back – and don’t be surprised if it isn’t just the women folk and innocent kids.

4. Don’t be out late.
Have a personal curfew. Always have a good exit plan to get back to your safety zone – could be your home, your hostel, your friend’s pad. As unexciting as it sounds, my personal curfew is 8:30pm. If I want to drink myself silly post that you will find me in my safe zone with people I absolutely truly trust.

5. Stay alert and watchful.
I have been groped as an adolescent in ‘safe’ public spots with and without my parents around. There are some really sick men and women out there: everywhere in the world. It’s best to exercise utmost caution and stay off the trouble grid. If you want to experience local tastes and flavours and ways of life, please stick to your known circle: classmates, professors, friends, friends of friends. The odd ones who don’t keep caution, sometimes do end up in very risky life threatening situations.

6. Selective media reporting.
Valencia’s tomatina is becoming a festering ground for sexual violence against women. The 1999 Woodstock festival was marred by reports of rape and sexual assaults. Incidents of violence and abuse during the London Olympics went under-reported. Media networks world over know how to cover their bases when certain news is bad for business.

The media holding a magnifying glass to isolated incidents, in developing countries, is acting as a trigger for more copy-cat offenders, and those who want to see if they can ‘get away with it’ too.

Then again, I’ve had colleagues from more developed countries than my own, tell me that their cops discourage them from reporting crimes; as a way for them to under-report crime in the country and hence portray it as a traveller’s paradise.

7. Progress is not equal.
As world boundaries collapse and economies boom, there will always be ones who are left behind. For them, whether they are in Mumbai, New York, London, Nairobi or Capetown, women’s emancipation and liberation are unfathomable concepts. So when they see a woman having a good time in public, it shakes up their foundations. Try explaining to these men that when a woman dresses the way she wants to or drinks what she likes in public, it is not an invitation to violate her.

Finally.

If you have the means and the inclination, travel.

It opens your mind up to the world around you and helps you see things from different points of view. All I can tell RoseChasm and others like her who have been scarred during their travels is to learn from their experiences so that their lives and that of those around them can be richer.

Lack of women

Not related to topic but a good read!!

Latest news coming out about the rape epidemic:

Police woman, returning with relative's corpse, raped in Jharkhand

Ranchi: A policewoman from Jharkhand was allegedly gang-raped on Thursday night when she was returning with the body of her brother-in-law, a cop who was killed in a recent Naxal attack.

The woman constable, along with three of her relatives, was taking the body from Ranchi to Garwah, about 150 km from the state capital. Three men, suspected to be from a gang of robbers, reportedly accosted and then attacked her vehicle on National Highway 75 just outside Latehar, where the woman cop is posted.

They then allegedly raped her in the same vehicle that was carrying the body, and robbed her relatives. The men also allegedly robbed other vehicles which were passing by. The incident took place only 5 to 7 km from the district headquarter office of the Latehar district.

The woman, a widow, was given a job in the Jharkhand Police after her husband was killed by Naxals a few years ago.

More than 36 hours after the attack, the police are, however, yet to make an arrest in the case. Only a few men have been detained for questioning after a First Information Report was filed.

An elected member of Assembly in India threatens female staff of toll plaza that he will have them stripped (they dared to ask him to toll plaza fee of Rs: 40). Proving this epidemic is not limited to a segment but the attitude is prevalent in whole society.

The offender belongs to Shiv Sena a Hindu (terrorist) organization which claims to be the conscious and guardian of Hindu morality.

When did they become a hindu terrorist group? nice try! Unlike terrorists on your side of the woods they don't strap bombs, kill innocent people and yea neither do they take any God's name. They see themselves more as protectors of Marathi culture than they are protectors of Hinduism. But again when brain wash starts at a young age in a Madrassa, its hard ..more a waste of my time explaining the difference...

Go ahead.. if u can find one.. typical indian...

There were atleast 4 just this month. I posted them as separate threads to spread some awareness among pakistanis who at the moment are more obsessed with rapes in India but ended up getting an infraction. Look them up ..you will find these threads locked.

From Wiki:
Although the party's primary base is still in Maharashtra, it has tried to expand to a pan-Indian base. In the 1970s, it gradually moved from solely advocating a pro-Marathi ideology, to one supporting a broader Hindu nationalist agenda, as it aligned itself with the Bharatiya Janata Party. It is commonly called an "extremist" and "chauvinist" party, as well as a "Hindu extremist" and fascist party

The group has been seen by some as a terror group, and has been linked directly with the 1970 communal violence in Bhiwandi, 1984 Bhiwandi riots, and violence in the 1992-1993 Bombay riots.

These claims are made by Indian origin analysts and political players. Its clear who is the brainwashed here :coffee:

Gimme a break man... for Gods sake..

Again Chinese are dragged..why?
I don't understand that why the hell you guys just don't talk about solution and act in an immature way.
The lady was harassed and no body can change such fact.
Such mentality of assault is not a result of few moments, but a lot factors are responsible behind such monstrous mentality.

-Indians must work on promoting such events and projects in which they are told to respect women.
-Such projected should be implemented on school level,as it is the stage of human when his/her mind is clear, what ever you will feed it,it will remain stored till death,so if you will give good impression of women and education about it,your generations will grow with such impression.
-School Children under 16 must be prohibited to enter inside cinemas.
-The films must be shown with censor policy and this policy must be applied on dramas and adopted by Indian channels as well.

Best Regards,
Slav Defence
