Analysts and military observers specifically in Pakistan, it seems, have been subjected to confusion regarding the Azm-e-Nau 4 wargames which were held for 12 days at the National Defence University in Islamabad.
The exercise saw participation from all three wings of the Armed Forces (Army, Navy and Air Force). Many people have been looking forward to see pictures and video packages of the wargames assuming they were executed in the field in a typical simulated battlefield scenario.
What must be noted here is that these wargames were tabletop strategic planning exercises that were held in a theoretical environment, based on pure planning using various If, Then and Else situations. Tabletop exercises such as the Azm-e-Nau 4 wargames are formulated to test the theoretical ability of officers and military operations planners to respond to particular situations. As reported in the press by Pakistani military officials, the central theme of these exercises were based on devising effective countermeasures against India's hostile Cold Start Doctrine.
The biggest benefit that tabletop exercises have is that they engage participants in a sort of "board game" environment where scenarios, no matter how dangerous they seem, can be tested amid a group debate on the various multi-faceted pros and cons of the strategy in place. Terms of the scenario are set out and then the officers gather around to vocalize their assessment and proposed solutions.
Such exercises are very beneficial in identifying weak points that need critical attention and which could otherwise not be noticed during actual on-ground drills owing to hazards.
