City police issued a prohibitory order banning Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik from entering Mangaluru city and participating in programmes from December 31 to January 6.
City police commissioner S Murugan said prohibitory order has been issued banning Naik's entry under Section 144 of CrPC. "Prohibitory order has been issued banning Dr Zakir Naik from entering the Police Commissionerate limits of Mangaluru City and participating in any public meeting/function for a period of 7 days from December 31 to January 6, 2016. We will take a decision on extending the ban later," Murugan said adding that similar orders will be issued banning the entry of Vishwa Hindu Parishat international working president Pravin Togadia too.
South Karnataka Salafi Movement (SKSM) in association with other organisations were planning to hold convention of Zakir Naik, who is a noted an Islamic orator and founder of Mumbai-based Islamic Research Foundation. The organisers had approached the city police seeking permission for the programme, which was scheduled to be held at Nehru Maidan on January 3. SKSM had held a preliminary meeting in this connection in the city in the presence of minister for forest, environment and ecology B Ramanath Rai and Mangaluru City North MLA B A Mohiuddin Bava.
In the meantime, Bajrang Dal Karnataka South zonal coordinator Sharan Pumpwell had announced that a convention inviting VHP leader Pravin Togadia will be held in Mangaluru to discuss various issues pertaining to cow slaughter, love jihad and attacks on Hindu activists. Sharan also had demanded that the government should not allow Zakir Naik to speak in Mangaluru.
