What's new

Christian death toll spiking in India. Arson, massacre, state involvement,2002 again?

Ali, I have no intention of digging the numerous incidents of the misuse of the "blasphemy" law. If you don't know the facts, better read up on that.

How many minorities are left in Pakistan now? They are just negligible in number and without a voice. In tribal areas again there was a report of their being forced to migrate under pain of death threat.

I don't want to make it an Indo-Pak thing. It is a terrible happening. No one is condoning it.

It is the holier than thou attitude on Pakistani's part that is amusing. No one gets fooled by it, you may rest assured.

The Islamic world as a whole has a lot to learn from India about tolerance and how multiple faiths ought to live in harmony. There is not a single Muslim majority country which is not "Islamic". Why do you expect any different treatment when you are in a minority?

You can never bring up any incidents, all that you can do is talk. And all i can do is laugh over you when you talk about multiple faiths living in harmony. Whole world knows how much harmony is there in this crumbling Indian 'state', many of her areas, which are almost out of hands.

How come buddhism disappeard from hindu india, where as it was dominant religion of this area? Your weird points are far from reality, and you live in dream. India is a country with official accounts of untouchables, the biggest violation of human rights. The hindu religion dont even consider a part of people from their own religion as 'humans' and label them as 'untouchables', let alone other religious minorities. Minorities can never live peacefully in india ruled by hindus. History has proved it, present is proving.

.
I.e whole of indian elite rulling class - dreamers of 'greater india' - suppoters of ethnic cleansing. And do i hear 'peace-lovers' I.e Those who dont bother, whatever the hell happens in their coutry and sit tight in their cosy homes. You call such insensitive humans 'peace lovers'?

No miniority is safe in India, never has been. World should take solid note of this by now, everyone knows state has always done this. Different minorities are targeted on yearly basis, sikhs-muslims-christians-etc-etc

This will become the very reason of indian downfall, unless indians set themselves right.

Christians are well educated class in India they are far ahead of Hindus and other religions many Hindus take pride in attending convent schools and colleges.
I am fully against violance they problem is sometimes their missionary schools openly lure and try to convert people into chirstianity mostly in village areas thats where the confrontation occurs and mob psychology takes over.
Btw many religious conversions takes openly place in India good example to conversion in Buddhism of Dalits due to caste system in India.
There is no downfall of India.

.
Disagree - you yourself argued that it primarily happened in the border areas of India. Given that Pakistan is narrower, and how large a percentage of its population inhabits the border areas, similar numbers of refugees would have left, given the proximity of a larger percentage of its population to the sights and tales of horror that came pouring out of trains and migrants from India.

And I still need to see numbers, since the drop in the percentage of the minorities is easily explained by the exodus of minorities similar to India's, and the influx of Muslims.

That many of these atrocities were orchestrated, in both India and Pakistan, by violent mobs is not being disagreed. But your attempt to exonerate India from this by referencing percentages is ludicrous.

I fail to understand your lack of seeing something very obvious.

If it was planned and orchestrated in India, it would have happened throughout India.

Given that it happened throughout Western Pakistan (with clear involvement of Muslim league guards and the army either standing by or encouraging the whole thing) seems to point to some obvious facts.

It is well documented that many Muslims in Pakistan felt that the Non-Muslims had no right to live in an "Islamic" country, that's why the near total decimation of the minorities there.

Now you may tell me about Jinnah's vision and it may well be true, what we are interested in is what happened and not what might have been.

I disagree with your contention that the atrocities were orchestrated by the government, on either side. That would be the only way that you would have seen atrocities committed nation wide. I am arguing that the atrocites were orchestrated by mobs and violent groups on both sides, and the result was spillage into neighboring communities as the horror stories came pouring out of India and Pakistan.

In Pakistan the narrow geography and the concentration of the population close to the border mean that a larger percentage of the population woudl have been affected - I fail to see why you cannot see so obvious an explanation of why the percentages were higher in Pakistan.

Before discussing why Buddhism disappeared from India, why don't you analyze why it disappeared from Afghanistan and Pakistan?

Why did the Parasis have to flee from Iran? Why were the ancient civilizations completely wiped out from places such as Persia and Egypt and Taxila and countless others?

Buddhism is as much an Indian religion as Hinduism. We love and respect all religions of India, indeed of the world as long as their followers are peaceful.

The question of percentage only arises if any of them are left. !% or thereabouts constitutes wiping out in my book.

Anyway, we have both made our points as well as we could.

The facts are there for all to see. Let people make their judgment.

As they say, lets agree to disagree.

I can laugh over your sources of information. Kindly search "treatment of indian minorities" in your fav search engine, you'll get billion more serious issues. Watching a stupid vidoe made by anti-Pak channel wont make you sound cool.

Also, you are not capable of answering my question, or maybe you are trying to ignore it. Why buddhism disappeard from 'south asia' while it thrives in China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and in Sri Lanka. How could buddhism got viped out of its own birthplace.

You should learn about bharamn atrocities which destroyed bhuddism in India, and yet you are talking about miss use of some law in Pakistan. India is for fascists bharamns, nobody is safe since they are again in power.

:rofl: by posting isolated incidents fromour side you are doing away with all the attrocities being committed against Christians and non-Hindus by Hindu extermists that too under the patronage of Indian government.

RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal are accepted by your government as political parties which are carrying out massacare of Christians, Muslims and own low cast Hindus.

Vinodh and other Indians are so brainwashed, that they will repeat the same old misconceptions ad infinitum.

Pakistan's ethnic minorities punch above their weight in most spheres. In Baluchistan, a majority of the bigger landlords and traders are Hindu.

In NWFP there is also a large and successful Hindu community who speak Hindko and Pasto. Sikh businesses have spread so much in NWFP that now almost every other medical store there is owned by a sikh, who are openly practicing their religion 5 symbols. Some of the most successful doctors are Hindus, as I have myself had the pleasure to meet.

Sindh is awash with hindus, with our previus acting Chief Justice of Pakistan, J. Bhagwan Das a Sindhi Hindu. They are major landlords in Sindh, and have a monopoly on produce trade in Sindh and Karachi. Almost to a man, the Aartis and major traders of rice and cereals in Sindh and Karachi are Hindus.

Christians are everywhere throughout the country, epecially the PUnjab. The number of christian churches gonging their bells on Sundays bears testament to that fact. Christians in PUnjab are now part of the highly educated elite, although many are still in the menial jobs that the Hindus forced them into while they were shudras. However, this is changing, with education christians have excelled in many fields. One of our great chief justices of the past, justice cornelius was a christian.

Another example would be to go to the north and visit Kafiristan. This is where descendants of the ancient greeks still live with their culture intact, practicing the ancient greek religion from the time of Alexander, which the greeks themselves have forgotten.

Karachi has areas full of Hindus, Parsis, Christians living in peace and harmony, with never an incident of discrimination or suppresson recorded, let alone violence.

Yes, the Punjab seems to be empty of its sikhs an Hindus, but so is the Indian punjab void of any muslims. The ethnic cleansing in the PUnjab was mutual, the reasons for which are the subject of another discussion.

In Pakistan, the number of minorities has been constant, while in India the muslims epecialy are decreasing in terms of over all popuation percentage.

I could go on and on about the welbeing of minoities in Pakistan, but I think the above should suffice.

More Christians Killed In India's Troubled State

Saturday, 04 October 2008

By BosNewsLife Asia Service with BosNewsLife's Stefan J. Bos

NEW DELHI, INDIA (BosNewsLife)-- An official of Maoist rebels claimed responsibility Saturday, October 4, for the death of a Hindu leader whose murder sparked anti-Christian riots in eastern India which killed nearly 50 people since late August, church representatives said.

In the latest incidents, at least two villagers were reportedly hacked to death by unidentified persons Friday, October 3, in the tense Kandhamal district of Orissa state.

India media said tribal peoples in Sindhipankha village killed Dushashan Majhi, a local influential Christian, first shooting him and them cutting him to pieces. The mob then turned on Sanyasi Majhi, also said to be Christian, who was with Dushashan Majhi. There were unconfirmed reports that a third victim was killed along with the other two.

The killings took place at Sindhupanka village while bodies were recovered apparently from previous violence early on Friday, October 3, Indian media reported.

Earlier on Wednesday, October 1, Lalji Nayak, believed to be about 80 years old, died from axe wounds after a Hindu extremist mob attacked his village of Hrudangia the previous day, news reports said. He was among over a dozen injured people following violence in which at least two women were killed, police and other sources said.

NUN RAPED

In addition Christian women have been raped by suspected Hindu militants, police said. In a statement monitored by BosNewsLife, police said they detained four people for the alleged rape on August 25 of a nun during Hindu-Christian clashes in Orissa.

"Four people have been arrested in connection with this shameful act," Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik told reporters. Separately, Kandhamal superintendent of police Praveen Kumar told the Press Trust of India news agency that the "woman was medically examined and the report received by us suggests the possibility of rape."

The arrests followed reports of fresh clashes and arson late Thursday in Boudh district adjoining Kandhamal, news reports said. "We have sent fresh security reinforcements to Kandhamal and Boudh districts," the French News Agency AFP quoted Orissa police chief Manmohan Praharaj as saying.

The clashes began August 23 following the killing of Swami Laxamananda Saraswati and four of his followers. Hindus blamed Christians, but on Saturday, October 4, Maoist rebels confirmed reports that they were responsible.

DEATH PENALTY

"We ordered the death penalty for him," Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda said in a statement. Panda said his group left letters at the killing in August claiming responsibility but that local authorities hid the evidence. "They suppressed the evidence so that they could get an excuse to attack Christians," Panda told Indian media.

Hindu groups have attacked churches, prayer halls and homes of Christians in the state, forcing tens of thousands of people to seek shelter in state-run refugee homes. Hard line Hindu groups have accused Christian missionaries of bribing poor tribes people and low-caste Hindus to convert to Christianity by offering free education and health care.

Churches have strongly denied those charges, saying "forcing" people "to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior is against the Bible."

The attacks have been condemned by the Vatican and described as "a national shame" by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Christians comprise some 2.3 percent of India's billion-plus Hindu majority population, according to official estimates. Christianity has been seen spreading in especially rural areas of the country, adding to opposition of Hindu groups, rights watchers say.

India’s Anti-Christian Violence Unparalleled Among World Democracies

Etalaat News Service

New Delhi, October 04 :

Despite the deployment of thousands of central and state law enforcement troops, the violence in Orissa continues to inflict daily casualties and massive damage to Christian properties.

Rev. Madhu Chandra, All India Christian Council (aicc) Regional Secretary, said, “The death tolls are

climbing, but less than a hundred are confirmed. Perhaps this is why the Orissa attacks haven’t gained international attention the worst violation of the freedom of religion in any democracy in recent history. What most people don’t realize is the goal of the attackers is to inspire fear. The attackers believe India is only for Hindus and their stated purpose is to convert people to Hinduism or force them to leave. To accomplish this, they only need to kill one or two people in each village or church. This is clearly terrorism and ethnic cleansing, but few Indian leaders are admitting it.”

Most of the victims are Dalits, formerly known as untouchables, from a tribe called Pano.

Dr. Joseph D’souza, aicc president, said, “The events of the last month, not only the attacks but the negligence of government, would be sad if it happened in a dictatorship or a totalitarian regime. The fact that it’s happening in the world’s largest democracy makes it infinitely sadder.”

Some police, mostly in rural areas, are neglecting their duties. For example, a Roman Catholic nun was raped amidst mob violence on Aug. 25, 2008, in Kanjemandi village between Raikia and Balliguda,

Kandhamal District, Orissa. A medical examination of the nun conducted that night at the Balliguda

Hospital confirmed rape. Both the victim and a priest, who tried to defend her and was severely beaten, tried to file cases in the Nuagaon police station. Their “First Information Reports” (FIR) were rejected. Eventually, the same FIR was accepted at the Balliguda police station. But, in spite of numerous eye witnesses, police didn’t investigate until 38 days after the attack and made four arrests yesterday.

India’s Supreme Court said on Aug. 8, 2008 that any police officer who turns away a person without

registering his or her complaint could face contempt of court charges and imprisonment (see “Cops understand only crack of whip, says Supreme Court” by Dhananjay Mahapatra, Times of India, Aug. 9, 2008). Justice B.N. Agrawal and Justice G.S. Singhvi instructed victims to appeal to their local chief judicial magistrate or the chief metropolitan magistrate. Ironically, the decision was scheduled for review on Aug. 25th, the same day as the attack on the nun.

“We demand that the officials in Orissa follow the law. We know multiple cases where Christians have tried to file cases with police after being attacked and the police turned them away. Police say they are overwhelmed and don’t have time to file cases or investigate since they must focus on maintaining order. But surely they realize that, unless crimes are promptly punished, the perpetrators are indirectly encouraged to continue their crimes. Justice is being denied to hundreds of victims,” said Chandra.

There has been no news about a second rape case. A young nun of the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Roman

Catholic diocese working at Jan Vikas Kendra, a social service centre near Nuagaon, was reportedly gang raped by mobs on Aug. 24, 2008.

Similar violence lasted about a week over Christmas 2007. Some are calling it “Christian-Hindu clashes” but media reports and aicc Orissa state leaders confirm that Christians are the overwhelming victims and are not instigating attacks. There are scattered reports of Christians firing guns in self-defense. The current violence is entering its seventh week since it began on Aug. 23, 2008 after the killing of a controversial swami by unknown assailants. Extremist groups blamed Christians for the murder.

The violence spread to at least ten other states and has affected hundreds of churches and thousands of Indian Christians. Within Orissa, the violence spread to almost half of the districts, and then was contained to Kandhamal District. But now attacks are spreading again with incidents reported in Gajapati and Boudh districts in the last few days.

Other examples of recent violence include:

Sept. 26th - G. Udayagiri, Kandhamal District: A young Christian man named Rajesh Digal was on his

way home from Chennai. While walking with his Hindu friend, they were attacked. The Hindu man was

stabbed in the left side but escaped. Rajesh was buried alive.

Sept. 30th - Rudangia, Kandhamal District: About 60 houses of Christians were burned in the morning, and one Christian lady was shot and killed while seven others were injured.

Oct. 2nd - Sindhipakali, Kandhamal District: At 8 p.m., mobs attacked the village and set Christian

houses on fire. They stabbed and killed a father and his teenage son in 9th standard (grade). Both

were Dalit Christians.

The All India Christian Council (www.aiccindia.org), birthed in 1998, exists to protect and serve the

Christian community, minorities, and the oppressed castes. The aicc is a coalition of thousands of Indian denominations, organizations, and lay leaders.

Why do Hindus violently assault Christians?

Mgr Agnelo Gracias, auxiliary bishop of Bombay, looks at anti-Christian violence in Orissa and other Indian states. Separating fact from fiction, he explains why claims that Christians engage in forced conversions are lies, asserts that Christians have a right to evangelize and that anyone has the right to convert, and shows that there is no religion as missionary as Hinduism.

Let us look at the phenomenon of the recent attacks against Christians. We shall examine first the alleged reasons for these attacks, and then go into what are perhaps the real causes for the attacks. And since conversion is one of the main reasons brought forward, in a third part, we shall examine the issue of conversion.

I. Alleged Reasons for the Attacks:

1. Christians are being attacked because of the killing of Swami Laxmananda Saraswati in Orissa. Investigations point to the involvement of Maoists in the killing.

In fact, the killing was condemned by Christians. Leaders like Cardinal Oswald Gracias, the Archbishop of Bombay, condemned the killing in his press conference. The official Catholic body of the Church, the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) also condemned it in its press release. The Chairman of the Orissa Catholic Bishops Conference, Bishop Thomas Thiruthalil, condemned it. If I may quote the words of his press conference, "The Catholic Community in Orissa was once again terribly shocked by the brutal murder of Swami Laxmananda Saraswati and four of his close associates... We, the Catholic community in Orissa deeply condemn the barbarous incident…"

In spite of this, the VHP and Bajrang Dal whipped up the mobs to attack hristians. They wanted a pretext to launch their attacks.

2. Christians are being attacked because of a pamphlet denigrating Hinduism supposedly published by the New Life Movement.

If such a pamphlet has actually been circulated, one must first investigate who published it and punish the evil-doers, not use it as a pretext to attack Christians indiscriminately. New Life has denied that they published any such pamphlet. It is extremely unlikely that any Christian group would have engaged in such a foolhardy act at this point of time. For all one knows, the pamphlet might have been published by some anti- Christian group themselves to stoke up communal flames!

There is a common misapprehension that Christians disdain other religions. The stand of the Catholic Church on this point is clear. With regard to other religions, Vatican Council II spelt out the Church's position very clearly: "The Catholic Church rejects nothing of what is true and holy in these religions. She regards with sincere reverence those ways of conduct and of life, those precepts and teachings which, though differing in many aspects from the ones she holds and sets forth, nonetheless often reflect a ray of that Truth which enlightens all men". Therefore the Church exhorts Catholics "prudently and lovingly, through dialogue and collaboration with the followers of other religions, and in witness of Christian faith and life, to acknowledge, preserve and promote the spiritual and moral goods found among these people, as well as the values in their society and culture” (Nostra Aetate, art 2).

3. Christians are being attacked because of conversions; the bogey of conversions is constantly used by the VHP and Bajrang Dal. Let us look at this issue squarely:

If there were so many thousands of conversions, as claimed, the number of Christians should have skyrocketed. The opposite is true. The Census of India shows a decline in the percentage of the Christian population of India vis-à-vis the total population: 2.6 per cent in 1971; 2.44 per cent in 1981 and 2.32 per cent in 1991, 2.3 per cent in 2001! This decline continues.

Forced conversions? The Catholic Church is totally against the use of any form of force. Vatican Council II has declared: "The Church strictly forbids forcing anyone to embrace the Faith, or alluring or enticing people by worrisome wiles. By the same token, she also strongly insists on this right that no one should be frightened away from the Faith by unjust vexations on the part of others” (Ad Gentes, art 13).

Canon Law is explicit: "No one is ever permitted to coerce persons to embrace the Catholic faith against their conscience" (Canon 748.2).

Conversion by allurements? This is an oft-repeated lie. Blessed Mother Teresa wrote in 1979: “Do not belittle the Hindu religion saying that our Hindu poor people give up their religion for 'a plate of rice'. To my knowledge, I have not seen this being done, though we feed thousands of poor of all castes and creeds, though thousands have died in our hands, beautifully in peace with God.”

The opposite is true in India: those who become Christians forfeit the benefits given by the Government, the reservation quota. In spite of losing so much economically, the dalits still embrace Christianity!

Several States have passed anti-conversion bills. The first was Arunachal Pradesh in 1978, Gujarat in 2003, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in 2006, Himachal Pradesh in 2007. There exist very stringent punishments for conversions by force or allurement. Till today, not a single case of such conversion has been brought forward. We have publicly challenged the governments to produce evidence of any such cases.

The fact that the governments have not been able to bring up even one case, is an indication that this charge is a fabrication. The very fact that these Hindus vie to send their children to our schools for education is a sign that they do not really worry about conversion. They should have been worried that we would influence these tender minds. Quite the contrary! They are begging us for admission.

II. What then is the real reason for antagonism towards Christianity and to our work amongst the tribals and dalits?

1. The answer is Socio-economic. With education, these tribals and dalits will no longer allow themselves to be exploited. The economic apple-cart will be overturned. Let's not forget that the RSS is made up of the upper castes which have a vested interest in retaining the status quo.

2. According to the teaching and example of Jesus, love of God and love of fellow humans are inseparable, like two sides of one coin: "For he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen" (1 Jn, 4:20). Jesus described his mission in the following terms: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Lk, 4:18).

When Jesus went about healing the sick, mixing with outcasts and assisting the poor, these works were not allurements, but the concrete realisation of the "Kingdom of God" which he preached: a kingdom of love and justice. So also, the humanitarian activities of the Catholic Church are by no means an allurement. She is walking in the footsteps of Jesus.

Rather than be apologetic, we can be proud of the service we render to our country, especially to the poorest and most downtrodden. I wish some of the fundamentalists who are attacking us would visit Mother Teresa's Home for the Dying and the Destitute in Sankli Street etc. Count how many of them are Christians and how many have been baptised. Visit Niramay Niketan in Trombay (a northern neighbour of Mumbai), the home looking after the AIDS-afflicted! An HIV-positive man who needed to have his legs amputated was turned down by almost 100 doctors, before one finally accepted to do the operation. He and many others like him are being lovingly cared for by the Sisters. These fundamentalists would not have come close to these patients, much less touch them. For them, they are human refuse to be consigned to the dustbin. For us, they are not Christians, Hindus or Muslims, but human beings to be loved and cared for.

III. Issue of Conversion

1. None of us is born a Christian or a Hindu or a Muslim – nothing in our blood that marks us out as belonging to a particular religion. Rather we are born within a religion – or better, in a religious community. People generally remain in the religion in which they were born. However, some exercise their freedom to embrace the religion which best satisfies their quest for God and for fulfillment. In matters religious, no one is to be forced to act in a manner contrary to his/her beliefs; nor is anyone to be restrained from acting in accordance with his/her beliefs. This is what "conversion" is all about. It is not so much a religious right, as a human right.

2. We do not have a right to convert others. We have a right to speak about our beliefs and our religion – the right to propagate our faith. This is guaranteed by the Constitution. The other has a right to be converted, if he chooses to.

3. Today, more than ever before, we live in a 'global village', an open society where ideas freely cross all boundaries. Just as there will always be people who change their ideology or political affiliation, so there will always be people who change their religion. If I can change my political party, why cannot I change my religion?

In conclusion, we can point out that the oft-made claim that Hinduism does not make converts, nor does it send missionaries, is not really true. No country in ancient times sent out more missionaries than India to propagate (Buddhist and Hindu) religion: from Sri Lanka to China! And at present, there are more Hindu missionaries in India and in the West, than Christian missionaries in India. Temples abound and continue to be built in Europe and America.

Londoners rally to stop violence on Orissa Christians

India UPA ruled Centre had asked the Naveen Patnaik Orissa state government to submit a report on the violence and action taken to prevent it. The Centre and the state have since sparred over the issue with each trying to pass the buck to the other.

There were reports that the Centre may impose Article 355 , which gives it the right to safeguard a state against external aggression and internal turmoil in Orissa.

Fderal Home Minister, Mr. Shivraj Patil has sent a strongly-worded letter to the Orissa Chief Minister, Mr. Naveen Patnaik asking him to take effective measures and provide security for the Christian community. The letter came hours after the Union Cabinet expressed grave concern over the situation in the state with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh directing Mr. Patil to present an appraisal report on the situation at the next cabinet meeting.Meanwhile, Mr. Patnaik has claimed the central force was being properly utilised in the riot-hit district of Kandhmal.

A total of 46 companies of central forces were deployed in Kandhamal alone as nine of the 12 police station areas in the tribal-dominated witnessed violence since over a month.

More than 370 persons have been arrested in connection with the recent violence in Kandhamal district. Joint operation by CRPF and Orissa Armed Police is continuing to apprehend people possessing illegal arms. The district Superintendent of Police Mr. S. Praveen Kumar said, 154 arms licences were surrendered so far.Action will be taken against the persons who have not deposited their arms licences within three days stipulated time that ended yesterday.

Ashok Masih Mattu, chairman of Indian Christian Concern, based in the UK, one of the groups organ*ising tomorrow's rally, said 'It's a very, very sad situation, and I've never seen anything like it before. The Indian government has said it's doing everything in its power to stop it, but the killing is still going on.'London rally calling for an end to the current wave of anti-Christian vio*lence in the Indian state of Orissa will take place in London today.

Todays march will be attended by the MPs John McDonald (Hayes and Harlington) and Virendra Shar*ma (Ealing and Southall) and repres*ent*atives of British Hindu groups. The demonstration will start at Richmond Terrace, by Victoria Em*bankment, at 2 p.m., and will deliver petitions to 10 Downing Street, and the Indian High Commission in Aldwych.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's statement that what was happening in Orissa was a 'national shame' Amnesty International has urged the Indian Government to 'match its words with action' and ensure that violence against Christians in Orissa stops.

BJD-BJP government in the state and sought to put the blame on the Centre.
"It is not the state government which fell short in deployment. It was the Central government which took 15 days to send para military forces," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said in New Delhi on Friday.

Does Islam allow one to leave the fold? Last I checked apostates are liable to be murdered in public.

Does your statement apply to this case?
That is debatable. They will go to hell in their afterlife, but people are converting from Islam. The problem is when SECULAR governments start enforcing Hinduism upon former Hindus.

Either admit that yours is a Hindu government and then its justified. Democracy rules and if democracy says its a Hindu government then its fine as long as you clearly define that you will be killed for converting away from Hinduism.
