Chinese nationalist tabloid Global Times has blasted the investment by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) in Arizona as “a dark turn” in the global semiconductor industry, and accused Washington of tricking the world’s most advanced chip maker into setting up a wafer fab in the US.

In an editorial on Friday, the newspaper, which is affiliated with the official People’s Daily, said TSMC’s decision to invest in cutting-edge technology in the US showed that Washington had tricked it, and that the US was stealing from the world’s most important technology in “our Taiwan region” – a reference to Beijing’s claim of sovereignty over the self-ruled island.

No. We don't care TSMC. We never see it as Chinese company anyway

Moores law will stagnant at about 1nm while current production node is 3nm. Below 1nm you run into Quantum effects. When technology stagnant China can catch up fast.

lol, talking about “use of coercive economic measures”, now we know what it means.

Vent anger? More like mocking both US childish move and Taiwan failed venture in Arizona...

US will have control over the export of advanced chips even more.

USA always preach free trade in the spirit of Ricardo and Smith, now how does it got to do with free trade?

When I studied Economics, Smith and Ricardo are enshrined as God. Now should US rewrite the textbook?

I have mixed feelings on this.

Taiwan's economy had major head start, due to KMT bringing large number of experts and wealth (looted my hometown clean in 1949) when they retreated to the island. That stolen wealth gave them an economic head start. TSMC was Chiang Ching-kuo's personal project. The man was a staunch anti-communist, but he very much considered himself a Chinese and dreamt of unification. I would have liked TSMC to remain a Chinese company when unification occurs. T It is unfortunate that DPP essentially handed TSMC to Americans on a platter.

At the same time, this is just a long list of things that affirms my belief that DPP should snuffed out after unification.

Morris Chang likely a CIA spy and ROC spy. Else, he would not have risen to No 3 man in TI.

It was the GoUS who allow the Asia region to have IC manufacturing and other economic activities, during the cold wars to cut off the influence of communist.

USA is also angry about manufacturing Apple products in China.

But this TSMC case is not just China who is angry because the purpose of building the factory is to target China.

But also Taiwan.

Not to mention USA is going to bomb Taiwan if there's China-Taiwan war as well.

Basically, this is a show of the selfishness of USA.

The word is TSMC = USSMC.

Maybe just a joke, but Morris Change also said that globalization is near death...

The father of Taiwan's chip industry said geopolitics have drastically changed the situation facing semiconductor makers and warned that "globalization and free trade are almost dead," and unlikely to come back.

...And it also mean China's role as the world's manufacturing source is coming to an end. Xi can thank Poutine for that. :enjoy:

Wishful thinking, not going to happen while US still needs Chinese engineers to teach them how to make cars: :enjoy:

It has nothing to do with what he said, and furthermore, do you really believe Tesla cannot build car without these Chinese engineer??

And he is not wrong too, both COVID and Russian invasion of Ukraine demonstrated strategic supplies line should not be solely relying on one country, that prompted to blackmailing, natural disaster. The early chip shortage in 2020 and the wheat war and oil/gas war in Ukraine shown anyone that it's time to build alternative to the alternative or you will suffer when it's too late.

The world is starting to divert their manufacturing base out of China. And that is going to happen eventually.

It already is in terms of shareholding. It is not only a dual listed company on the Taiwan and New York stock exchanges, the majority of it's capital is US backed. It's single biggest shareholder is CitiGroup with just over 20%. It's a similar situation with ASML. This talk from some of the US 'stealing' TSMC is rather odd, that happened a long time ago.

TSMC is an US experiment to give Taiwan livelihood that he grown out of proportion. The biggest early shareholder is Taiwanese government. At a certain point of time as TSMC prospect of success becomes obvious, GoTW was forced allow US be majority shareholder.

Nor US or Taiwan can ever foresee that TSMC eventually hammer Intel like nobody even after US acquire majority of the stakes.

TSMC is a unintended baby of US. If US ask TSMC to relocate TSMC can do nothing but oblique.
