America is already developing its 6th generation fighters. It is not too early for China to begin the R&D of its own 6th gen fighter. It is not wise to wait until your enemy has develop a new weapon before you begin. That is the sure way to lose.

Making a prototype and mass production is completely different? China says their J-20 will be in service around 2018-2020 and JSF is nowhere near induction phase. So I doubt either country will even start their research on 6th generation before 2020s? Bear in mind, another 20 years for prototype and first flight and another decade before they are commissioned?

I dont know about China, but I can confirm that the US has started research on what will actually make a 6th gen fighter 6th gen.

Yes.

F-35 squadrons are being formed. Not likely same for the J-20.

The initial several models of any aircraft are usually technology demonstrators and for operational explorations, as in the question: 'Can we deploy this aircraft?' During this exploratory phase, bugs are discovered, analyzed, and ways to remedy. Bugs of every type, from software down to what kind of wiring clamp is needed here and there for so-and-so systems. Yes, a simple wiring clamp can be a 'bug'. Always occurs -- Major redesigns of subordinate systems from their top levels. For example, a new hydraulic actuator came on the market after the aircraft has been built and it was found to be superior to the ones you installed in your new fighter. You do not need to re-do the entire hydraulics system. That is 'top level'. You just need to adapt the newer actuators into the system.

Sometimes bugs are discovered long after the aircraft has been deployed...

All F-16 aircraft manufactured by Lockheed Martin prior to 2003 contain wire harnesses insulated with Aromatic Polyimide. This insulated wire is commonly known as "KAPTON" wire or, MIL-W-81381 wire. Traditionally, wire used in aircraft installation are typically identified by the insulation characteristics and further, is not life cycle specification controlled.

While in the beginning, KAPTON insulated wire was light weight and possessed great electrical and mechanical properties such as, abrasion and cut-through resistance, high temperature resistant and strength, time has proven to take a toll, making KAPTON susceptible to degradation, breakdown and ultimately, failure.
The US and partners had to re-wire EVERY SINGLE F-16. I transferred from the F-111 to the F-16 at the near end of that program. Praise be to Allah on that. Each F-16 became a 'hangar queen' for up to 60 days.

Anyway...The J-20 has not even entered this operational exploratory phase, at least not by known news sources, or at best it is starting entry into this phase. If the Chinese learned from other countries that developed their own air power instead of importing it from other countries, and if they learned it well, then major fook-ups like the KAPTON wire will not occur. This phase will take a few years, depending on the technology level of the aircraft. If a major power like the US can make such a screw up, so can -- and probably WILL -- a nascent power like China.

On the other hand, when military units are being formed, it means that operational exploratory phase is nearing the end with major systems certified for deployment. It means operation parameters for the aircraft in peace and war times outlined, maintenance procedures in place, logistic lines readied, etc...This is not the same thing as having an actual military unit flying and working on the aircraft. Such a unit is often used to create those operational parameters and maintenance procedures. It is part of that operational exploratory phase. The F-35 is past that.

You are mistaken. The US is already deep into the technology exploration phase for the so called '6th gen' fighter.

You are mistaken. The USAF have been flying the F-16N (N for nuclear) out of Area 52 for years. :lol:

I bet J-20 will not come into production line by 2015... it might be around 2018-2019 time frame...
