China's Pivotal Role in Hollywood's Billion Dollar Movie Club

lmao what are you talking about? You still have "people" in Hollywood like Bai Ling literally acting as whores on screen. In movies in the US Asian males are almost non-existent or portrayed like Fu Manchu and 16 Candles. Take a look at Han from 2 Broke Girls, a short nerdy Korean guy leering at his white girl employees. What about William Hung? Short nerdy Chinese guy. Try portraying a black man as a similar stereotype though?

Diversity in the US is limited to the "welcomed" minorities only. Asians, especially Chinese, are actively discriminated against. Every success of Asians in the US is in spite of, not due to, the establishment.

I agree asians are pretty non-existent in Hollywood. Can't think of many leading actors (Jackie Chan ..meh)

Yes, 16 Candles had a bad stereotype (1984 before "politically correctness" ).

Worst Hollywood Portrayals of Asian Americans : Asian-Nation : Asian American News, Issues, & Current Events Blog

Everything in the worst list (except William Hung 2008ish ) are pre "politically correctness"

10. The movie Year of the Dragon
9. Charlie Chan
8. Fu Manchu
7. William Hung
6. The sitcom All American Girl starring Margaret Cho
5. The movie The Good Earth
4. Long Duk Dong in Sixteen Candles
3. Injustices suffered by cinematographer James Wong Howe
2. Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany’s
1. Deaths on the set of The Twilight Zone

Can't say I remember William Hung but here he is...

Of course the worst may be these guys Minions (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As for future Hollywood movies. I expect Michael Bay (Transformers) to make a whole bunch more bad movies with China as his target audience.
You'll see Chinese actors no doubt.

People who are thinking it's easy for anyone (not only Asian or Chinese) to break out in Hollywood have to be living in his dream.

One need to realise, movie industries type cast a lot, and this does not just happen in the US, but all over the world. When you are making a movie in the US, you expect your "hero" or "heroine" to be able to communicate to the audience, someone who they can be relate to, and by communicate, I don't mean talk. That's why you almost always end up having a white guy or girl playing the title or first billing in any Hollywood movie.

Think of it this way, if an action movie is being make and screen in China, targeting Chinese audience, do you think the Director would want Bradley Cooper to be the hero in the movie??

thats why in Hong Kong there are so many billboard commercials of white British looking men and Italian looking women right? Because they really look like the average Hong Konger right? lol ok.

what about how you can't say racist things against blacks but can say racist things against Chinese?

Wierd how you are so defensive of the establishment in the US when their police force probably will check your ID in Arizona.

There are movies with Asian main actors but in those movies they are portrayed as immigrants rather than average American residents. But the situation is slowly changing and there will be a time when Asian actors will appeal to a regular American audience. It will take some time for Asians to deeply integrate in the society.

Who can forget Harold and Kumar? :enjoy:

Those movie depict Chinese as whore are B grade movie or never make it pass Chinese censor board. Big block bluster wanted to make big bucks must please Chinese . take it as Chinese spend money on american to entertain us. :D

We cannot be like Japan who expect to export and do not spend money overseas. Global inter trade allows interaction of China and other world which in terms means projecting influence.
I'm referring more to the subtle racism of Hollywood. Read post #14

Why do Chinese need to break into Hollywood? America is a European dominated country, and the movies must reflect that. I personally don't like to watch an Asian James Bond, like James Wong? Hell no, Danial Craig is awesome.

On the financial scale, top Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming, also one of my fav, earned a reported 75 million last year, and he ears around 30-80 million a year just in China. Obviously that's one guy, but the money is good in China.

The only other reason is global notoriety, but that's difficult even for Americans. Most Chinese, even my English speaking cousin, has no idea who 99% of the actors or actresses are, and don't want to know.

Why do you need integration? No disrespect and no propaganda would be good enough. Nothing to do with prestige either - nobody dares disrespect blacks in the US media.

Integration means for the average public an Asian is not really seen as an American yet because most of Asians are recent immigrants. Even when we think about Americans, what comes to our mind is a white person. When Asians have a deep impact on the society, we will see many Asian faces in Hollywood.

The Asian actors in the Hollywood movies all look very nerdy whether it is East Asian or South Asian.

Typical stereotype from Hollywood.

Nah, we will always remain as the minority among the population, it is unlikely to reach among the mainstream audience.

Blacks and Latinos might have a better chance here because of the population advantage.

Pretty sad really. Whatever happened to Chinese as we used to be able to buy hollywood movies on dvd before it even came out. I guess if the Chinese public want to make racist Hollywood richer, it's their choice.

The cost to make the movies in Hollywood is increasing in an unsustainable manner, yet they still haven't improved the quality of their movies with a bunch of overpaid celebrities.

Their domestic market is oversaturated, and the oversea box office is small except China, so they need to exploit the booming Chinese market in order to sustain their film industry.

BTW, i think China should impose more restriction, since we cannot let them to feed our audiences with all kind of crap.

some people are reading too much into it
if it is a good film, then everyone wants to watch it, as simple as that````do you want Chinese to watch more Chinese movies? well start to make good films then```coz the home made movies we have are either tacky or with a plot can only come to reason a half-wit

Do blacks have a deep impact on American society other than for certain unpreferred activities? Yet why is it that it is absolutely taboo to make fun of blacks? I do recognize that blacks suffer discrimination, but why do Asians who suffer discrimination as well, also get made fun of, and nobody steps up?

Chink in the armor referring to Jeremy Lin - does the media dare say the n**** on the field, referring to Michael Jordan?

And I don't mind if Asians are absolutely invisible - that'd be great too. What I do mind is the hugely negative portrayals of Asians. Harold and Kumar is a comedy movie - they will never be heroes like Iron Man or whatever white Man there is. But then you have 16 Candles, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and Two Broke Girls.

@gambit

Don't need to speak up for your management, they can speak for themselves. You'd get racially profiled in Minnesota as a possible Asian gang member due to the amount of Viet gangsters over there.

If you think that Spiderman or something has a better plot than 致青春 I question your intellect.

Dude, do you know the different between Billboard Commercial and Movie? How much of the "You need to Relate" for a billboard commercial.

Beside, commercial company have signed "Spoke Person" and if you are talking about Western brand, (ie Prada, LV or Swarovski) and you don't have 1 spoke person for one region, you use the same spoke person for the whole world, if that company is a western company that selling their stuff in hong kong, chances are their spoke model will be "western" too. I cannot think of any one of the Chinese company even in US and Australia who had a western spoke person. Beside Lenovo which signed Aston Kutcher

And Movie is another business, you have smartly avoided my question, while you are raising your own, you still have not answer me which Chinese Production feature a western person which target Chinese audience. I can name many Hollywood Production which have featured Chinese actor in holly, Chow Yuen Fat for example, Have been featured in pirate of the Caribbean, The Children of Huang Shi and Bullet Proof monk.

Then you get some bigger name in Hollywood like Lucy Liu and even BD Wong. And who can forget the lovable villain Zhi Ma?

Wierd how you are so defensive of the establishment in the US when their police force probably will check your ID in Arizona.

Well, I don't know which part of People Republic of United States you are from, but in the Actual USA, you won't have LEA asking for an ID for ANYPERSON, doesn't matter if it is White, Black and Chinese.

To be clear, you are not require to bring your ID with you all the time in the US, unlike Hong Kong, unless you are trying to access highly secure area or you are operating any type of Machines that require license.

ACLU would have a field day if Arizona decided they need to issue people State ID and require all Arizona resident to carry them for no particular reason

Funny you use 2 broke girl as an example but you fail to see how they portray Black Stereotype via Earl, by the way, Mattew Moi (Han) is a Chinese, I have met him before when I was working on a set.

2 Broke Girl is probably one of the most Political Correct TV show on earth today, it don't just diss on one particular group of people, it disses everyone. You have

Oleg - The Ukraine Cook who always a womanizer and was dissed about his hygiene (targeting almost all eastern European)

Sofie - The Polish Cleaning Company lady who are loud all the time and always so dumb (Polish stereotype)

Earl - An African American cashier who always think of himself of guilty on ANYTHING. (Black stereotype) Whom ironically, work as a cashier who skim money off Han

Max - An White Trash American waitress who are typical dumb and have a sexual openness (Don't really know how to say it politely) an typical white trash stereotype

Caroline - A former rich socialite who now work as a waitress, there are more rich people stereotype then I can count during the 4 season

Han - An Korean American diner own who almost always on the edge of gay and short jokes.

Now tell me, which race or type of people have 2 broke girls not dissed yet, they had it with Mexican (20 Hola Chica) Philippino (Caroline mentioned Black market and Philippino Market), Muslim (Amir the bomb), Vietnamese (Sweatshop above the Mahattan school of pastry) and Abo Australian (Hans was on a casual flight with an half aboriginal who also have personality)
