China’s Mars rover feat took NASA decades

LOL! How are we slow compared to China?
Far earlier? We only started launching satellites 12 years before China.

Since then:
We have sent probes to EVERY planet.
A probe orbiting around the Sun.
A probe is on it's way back from collecting samples from an asteroid.
Probes outside the solar system.
We have had 12 men walk on the moon, with some of them driving on it. They brought back 383 Kilograms of moon samples.
We sent a 75+ ton space station into orbit with a single launch.
We helped build a second Space Station.
We have had people continuously in orbit in the ISS since November of 2000...that's over 20 years.
We have had 5 spaceship designs (including an 8 person capacity space plane) send over 500 people into orbit.
We have two nuclear powered rovers driving on Mars right now AND a helicopter.

Nuclear powered rover is hardly new technology. China had it in the early 2010s.


China has rovers on the moon and Mars. US does not. Fact. :china:

Also, Zhurong has vastly superior radar than any American rover. I quote:

It isn't cheap talk the RS-25 outperforms every other engine in all parameters except cost.
It is a complex engine with the added complexity of using liquid hydrogen as fuel. But the specific impulse of HydroLOX is 30% to 40% higher than other fuels justifying the cost and complexity for some missions.

In terms of knowhow, the US is the leader in closed stage HydroLOX and MethaLOX engines.
Russia leads in closed cycle KeroLOX engines but the Chinese have caught up with the Russians.
However, the Saturn V Rocketdyne F1 is still the most powerful single nozzle KeroLOX engine ever built. The RD-170 generates slightly more thrust but technically it is 4 engines not one since it has four combustion chambers and nozzles. I believe the SpaceX Merlin is the only American operational KeroLOX engine, it is a small cheap reusable and an open stage design.

To answer your question ULA Atlas V propelled by RD180 was picked as the lowest bidder by LSP NASA for the Mars mission. ULA is one of the many launch service provide for NASA. The cost of one RD180 engine is 11m$ it is by far the cheapest rocket engine in the world and thus unsurprisingly ULA was able to beat every other competitor in the Mars launch bid.

So the answer is supapowa is fake! I know US space tech is not really as good as many bragging. It difficult to admit one is not good enough. China is better than US. :enjoy:

The battery, using plutonium-238, will be able to power the 100-kilogram vehicle for more than 30 years, Ouyang Ziyuan, the chief scientist quoted. Mr. Ouyang said the rover would be powered by the sun during daytime and by nuclear power during the night.

No he didn't. They are still at NASA making the SLS which is more powerful than the Falcon Heavy.

Yutu rover has both nuclear battery and solar panel. Nuclear battery is needed to generate sufficient heat to keep it alive during cold lunar nights. I quote:

This would preclude the need for batteries and nuclear power sources such as those used by the Chinese rover that recently landed on the moon. The lunar night lasts approximately 14 days, during which temperatures as low as -150 ºC have been recorded. This complicates vehicle movement and equipment functioning on the lunar surface, requiring the transport of heavy batteries from Earth or the use of nuclear energy, as exemplified by the Chinese rover Yutu.

Actually, nuclear battery is nothing new. It's been used since 1960s or 1970s.

The R-25 engine once used up, will be gone. All the tools for making R-25 engine are gone. Plus the fact, R-25 is an ill efficient and highly expensive rocket. It has powerful thrust but too expensive to produced. Those current SLS are using mothball old R-25 engines left over by Saturn V project.
Now you are playing stupid. That nuclear battery is not used to drive the rover.

Yes, we know all about that. Our Voyager spacecraft use them and have been running for 44 years. :enjoy:

The R-25 engine once used up, will be gone. All the tools for making R-25 engine are gone.

The sheer scale of the ignorance of the Chinese here is astounding.
They can still make the engines. Yes, they have to re-open up the assembly line. But you'd have to do that with a new rocket engine assembly line too. It's not like they don't know how to make it.

Under the $1.79 billion contract, Aerojet Rocketdyne will manufacture 18 additional Space Launch System (SLS) RS-25 rocket engines for Artemis missions.

LOL! That nuclear battery was used to keep the yutu from freezing at night and apparently it failed.
Not gonna happen. SLS has major design problems. It'll take many years to correct.

It's already at Kennedy Space Center :whistle:

So much of your selective post... Yutu 2 is still working fine using the nuclear battery and will achieved the feat of both Lunar and Mars rover working at the same time on May 22.

Too bad that "hardly new technology" wasn't mastered by China to become reliable enough to replace your Mar's rover's solar panels. :whistle:
