Yep, they definitely showed they weren't completely out of the game when their manned mission faltered. That rover was a great technological idea.
The first modular space station was assembled by Russia in the 1980s and 1990s. It wasn't until ISS that humanity assembled another modular space station. Actually, it was Russia that came up with the idea of landing on another planet (first was Venus), rovers (Lunokhod was first), space stations (Salyut was first). The reason Russia was not able to put a man on the moon was because they didn't have a super heavy lift rocket which is required to do that. America had Saturn V which was developed by former Nazi scientist Wernher von Braun who developed V1 and V2 during WW2.
