China will create own Christian belief system amid tensions with church, says official

The Koreans changed their writing system because of Christianity? Why?

The Koreans used to write in Chinese characters , which Koreans refer to as Hanja script. But around the mid 15th century, the Joseon Dynasty of Korea formally declared that they would use their own , indigenous writing script known as Hangul.

What differentiates Hangul (now used in Korea) with Hanja is that Hangul is based on phonetics (vowels and consonants). It is similar to the Japanese script of Katakana and Hiragana, which are also based on consonants and phonetics. Japanese written language use a mixture of Chinese characters (known as Kanji) and our own indigenous phonetic alphabetic system (known as Katakana and Hiragana).

It was the Korean monarch , King Sejong the Great who ordered the use of Hangul as the state writing system , and forever banished Hanja (Chinese writing) as secondary. To this day, Hanja is non-existent. The reason for this was -- an act of legitimacy. By removing Chinese writing system and establishing an indigenous Korean writing system, they were forming their own 'Joseon' identity. A Korean identity.

I don't think CD said it's due to Christianity. What i do know is that Korean people have a Chinese name next to their Korean one.
Never knew Koreans used to use Chinese characters until they invented their own writing system. What's interesting to know is that Koreans still use Chinese zodiac i believe

Thanks for the info, I was just confused because the exchange went as follows:

Multani: I understand this could be the reason why the Japanese didn't adopt Christianity en mass, but still the Koreans did and they have maintained their culture and language, even though some Chinese believe its mostly stolen from China

Chinese-Dragon: You know Korea used to write with Chinese characters right? As did Vietnam? But they gave it up, and now they cannot even read their own historical books and documents. That's not really maintaining culture. Whereas Japanese still write using Chinese characters.

It seemed that the cause-effect relationship, or at least the conversation, was centered around the effect of Christianity on culture. CD's reply seemed to imply that Korea embraced Christianity, and lost its culture, but Japan did not embrace Christianity, and did not lose its culture. As it turns out, Multani and CD were simply talking past each other, I suppose.

There are a lot of people in my hometown are Christian. also continue to spread.
My mother is also a Christian.
Christianity in some ways, constant elimination of Chinese traditional culture. For example, some Christians stop worshiping ancestors in the New Year. They believe that Chinese traditions and customs are feudal superstition, I think this is wrong.
I think China needs localization of Christianity, with Chinese characteristics. Like Buddhism same.

Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism thousands of years, has been integrated into the Chinese people's lives,
even If not true Buddhists, Taoists also affected,
But with the Westernization accelerated China is facing a loss of traditional culture.
We should keep its essence, to its dregs, to retain our traditional culture.

although I am not a formal Buddhist, but I like Buddhism:pleasantry:

For example, American evangelical Christians find it wrong when they see German Christians drink beer. On the other hand, German Christians find it wrong when American Christian women put make up on and dress like hookers.

I am a Christian in America, and this is so incorrect I don't know where to start. There are a huge number of different sects in the US. Some of them disapprove of drinking alcohol. Most only disapprove of drinking to excess (getting drunk). Most American churches would disapprove of a woman "dress(ing) like (a) hooker". But... your definitions (in both the US and Germany) about how hookers dress is going to be different too, so that's a hard comparison. I don't know of any church that would completely ban makeup, as if makeup is done correctly it can be hard to tell someone is wearing it - it's supposed to look natural (in the US, other countries have other aesthetics).

I personally grew up in a church that disapproved of drinking and dressing like a hooker, but they were pretty understanding about the drinking (in moderation) on the part of some culturally similar sects. Sort of...well, they looked down their noses at it... its complicated.

But no one in either country would suggest it is the government's job to tell churches what their rules should be. Well, Germany _might_, but they have a history of issues with religious tolerance and still have a state church.

The only rules I can think of that the US government has cracked down on with churches are polygamy, refusing to pay taxes, and snake handling. Yeah, there are some sects in the US that believe handling poisonous snakes is proof of God's blessing. Seriously. Government keeps telling them to cut it out, they keep doing it secretly... its an ongoing thing. More about the kids than the adults, really.

I was talking specifically about the highlighted bit, about them "maintaining their culture".

I don't think Christianity has much of an impact on writing systems.

More on topic though, I think religious beliefs are often an integral part of a national culture. Chinese culture for example has been heavily influenced by Confucianism/Taoism/Buddhism.

And as noted before, even though I am not religious, I still do practice Ancestor veneration, for cultural reasons.

Funny thing is Christianity is a belief of superstition itself. How sad some Chinese do not even read the bible, or perhaps they read the "edited" Chinese version of the bible. Having some con man preach you certain phrases from the bible is not the same as reading the bible.

Christianity is great if you want slavery, control over women, if you're Jewish, if you endorse genocide, if you like raping unmarred women.

I have a question: Aren't Christians allowed to marry non-Christians unless non-Christians follow their belief, i.e becoome Christians? And you, a child of a Christian couple, didn't get baptism and become a Christian at a young age?

I am not familiar with Christian. Just asking :-)

There is no such requirement thatChristians only marry Christians 。
China is a religious secular country.
In China, the proportion of Christian majority are female . In our there, generally a person faith, on behalf all the family.
But, if u think u are a Christian, that your personal thoughts.
I personally think that I am not a Christian
And I did not baptized,;)

You never knew Koreans used to use Chinese characters? WTF. Seriously? I thought that's just common knowledge everyone in China and Korea knows, lol I have many Korean friends who still are able to recognize Chinese characters, just not proper pronunciation. Of course because Korean language, by adopting Chinese language in history, has lots of homophones, so sometimes in official documents, they have to use Chinese characters for clarification.

VN media paints our Christians troublemakers. I am also friends with some Christians and I am quite uncomfortable with VN Christians put God above the laws and govt. Do Chinese Christians get in cases where they must choose between God and their country? What is the majority choice?

Christianity wont change indigenous cultures as much as Islam does. My family's female members are all Christians but they still don't oppose ancestral worshiping, etc. Not sure about those newly minted Christians, lol, because my family was Christian since Qing Dynasty.

Islam used to mix with Chinese cultures very well too, their mosques were all traditional Chinese styled buildings, and used Chinese scholars to interpret Koran. Nowadays, all newly built mosques are Arabic style, lol. Sad. Those Chinese Muslims also only listen to Arabic scholars. Not sure what's wrong.

Create our own Christian belief system is not enough, I think China should create a Chinese religion that all religions are welcome first they have to convert to Chinese and then they can practice their respective religions within China and feel free to change religion if they want..And as Chinese, they can't kill other Chinese because of the faith, they can only die for China's cause and not for religion.

What you guys think of that

Religion in China is not allowed doing politics, justice, education. Country more than religion, religious should be services country .
Some people put religion above the law, they will be banned.
China has its own religious system, Avoid foreigners interfering in China's affairs by religion ,
So Western countries says China have no freedom of religion ,
So Vatican protest China ,China does not need the Vatican to lead the Chinese Catholic
