President Xi Jinping announced China's participation in 600 new projects that aim to help developing countries on trade, poverty reduction and in other areas, saying that China remains "as committed as ever" to South-South Cooperation.

In the next five years, China will initiate 100 new poverty-reduction projects, 100 agricultural projects, 100 trade projects, 100 projects on ecological preservation and climate change, 100 new hospitals and clinics, and 100 schools and vocational training centers, Xi said.

China will set up a South-South Cooperation and Development Academy and offer $2 million in cash assistance to the World Health Organization in addition to training a half- million technical personnel from developing countries, Xi said in opening remarks at a high-level roundtable on South-South Cooperation at United Nations headquarters in New York on Saturday afternoon.

"There should be more communication and exchanges with developed countries and greater participation of businesses and the private sector to build multi-tiered partnerships and create a community of shared interests among various stakeholders," he said.

Xi said that South-South Cooperation should deliver practical results and be results-oriented rather than "just being empty talk". Projects should yield tangible results that create better economic, social, and environmental impacts for the benefit of the general public, he said.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, co-host of the roundtable with China, said he is "deeply grateful" for China's support and commitment to nations of the global south.

"All this support will go a long way to address the needs of the poor and the most vulnerable and contribute political momentum for the success for the climate negotiations in Paris in December," he said. "As we implement the 2030 sustainable-development agenda, it will be important to widely share the effective policies and practices that China and other fast-growing economies in the global south are employing."

China currently contributes more than $4 billion of aid toward South-South Cooperation on a yearly basis.

Prior to the high-level roundtable, Gyan Chandra Acharya, undersecretary-general at the UN and representative of the least developed countries, said that China is an example of a developing country that was able to transform its economy and lift millions out of poverty, setting an example for other nations.

"It is possible to really change the narrative of the world — which is, 'Oh, you have too many challenges, you have too many big issues' — no, you have to look at the possibilities. We can really go towards the success if there is global collaboration and cooperation. I think that message coming from China will be very strong, because it has … over one generation completely transformed its economy," he said.

As a developing country, Xi said China looks to enhance solidarity and cooperation with other developing countries, an "unshakable foundation" of China's foreign relations. The country will share with developing countries more development opportunities, he added.

"The profound friendship between the Chinese people and people of other developing countries are our most valuable asset," Xi said. "We will as always promote our development along with the common development of all developing countries, align our efforts to realize the Chinese dream with the endeavors by other developing countries to attain their dreams for a better life for their peoples and pursue common progress of all developing countries. China will never waver on this commitment, not under any circumstances."

The best news of today. I wished to share it had I had access to a laptop. Do not like to do it on smartphone.

So thank you @AndrewJin for catching and sharing it.

This is an example of Dragon's inclusive growth-with claws retracted.

And it is a lot more meaningful to be declared by the President at the UN in the aftermath of his meeting with US officials.

AIIB and BRICS Deeopment Bank will be put in good use.

The New Normal.

Indeed, instead of wasting time discussing this crisis that crisis, the priority should be always development, development, development.

UN chief hails China's role in promoting South-South cooperation

UNITED NATIONS - China is "a leader" in advancing South-South cooperation, UN chief Ban Ki-moon said on Saturday.

China has floated many important initiatives, including the BRICS Development Bank, the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank, and the Silk Road Development Fund, Ban said at a high-level roundtable on South-South cooperation, co-hosted by China and the United Nations.

Ban's remarks came after Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that China will provide 2 billion US dollars to support South-South cooperation.

On Friday, Xi also pledged 3 billion dollars to the newly launched South-South Climate Cooperation Fund, Ban noted.

"All this support will go a long way to address the needs of the poor and most vulnerable and contribute to political momentum for the success of the climate negotiations in Paris in December," the UN chief said.

The event was held on the sidelines of the UN Sustainable Development Summit, which is going to adopt a post-2015 sustainable development agenda.

It is expected to provide a platform to exchange views and share insights on the ways in which South-South cooperation and triangular cooperation can contribute to the implementation of the agenda.

China pledges $2 billion to support South-South cooperation

The figure is an initial pledge of the South-South cooperation assistance fund, Xi told the United Nations' Sustainable Development Summit at UN headquarters on Saturday, adding that China will increase investment in poor countries.

In his first-ever UN address, Xi also said China would act "by putting justice before interests and joining other countries in a concerted effort to realize the post-2015 agenda".

Xi said that China also would step up investment in least-developed countries by at least $12 billion by 2030.

He also told the audience that China would relieve debts owed by least-developed countries this year, with elaboration on how much the debts are and which countries owe them.

Other measures also include establishing an international development knowledge center to facilitate studies and exchanges by countries on theories and practices of development, and mulling the establishment of a "global energy Internet" to facilitate efforts to meet the global power demand with clean and green alternatives.

The announcements won applause at the UN.

The Sustainable Development Summit runs from Friday to Sunday ahead of the annual General Assembly gathering of world leaders that begins on Monday. More than 150 heads of state and government attend the summit, which aims at formally adopting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to guide the development of the international community over the next 15 years.

A new global agenda to end poverty by 2030 and pursue a sustainable future was unanimously adopted on Saturday by the 193 UN member states.

The global body says the effort could require up to $5 trillion a year.

Tegegnework Gettu, undersecretary-general for the General Assembly and Conference Management, said China has contributed to the UN's Millennium Development Goals, and China's good relationship with the G77 group of developing countries and role in South-South Cooperation have led to developing countries being better engaged at the UN.

"I know China has contributed bilaterally, which is very helpful for the UN, and that China also has increased its multilateral role," he said.

Gettu, whose office is in charge of the General Assembly and conferences, said it has been a while since a head of state from China has addressed the UN. "We are very happy to have him (Xi) here, and it is a very important time to listen to him,'' he said.

Gettu said that China's participation at the UN, where it is one of the five permanent members of the Security Council, has increased and that it has a significant role to play as the world's second-largest economy and one of its most powerful nations.

"Everybody expects China to play an increasing and proactive role at the United Nations, particularly in conflict resolution, in peacekeeping and in development," he added.

Along with working with the UN, Gettu said, "We would like China to continue its efforts in engaging these developing countries."

On the sidelines of the summit, Xi is to chair the Global Leaders' Meeting on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, and chair the High-level Roundtable on South-South Cooperation co-hosted by China and the UN.
