China had requested for a 1000 acre block of land in Hambantota to set up an investment zone, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

He said more Chinese investments were coming in to Sri Lanka.

“A Chinese company is interested in starting a ship building project in Hambantota as well,” he said.

While citing that the Andhra Pradesh State Government had given a 10,000 acre block of land to China, he said Sri Lanka would lose investors if it misses opportunities.(Yohan Perera)

China should have done this before. Hambantota is a type of area that should concentrate on Industrial developments.

COLOMBO, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka aims to implement a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China in order to have preferential access to a market of 1.3 billion people, the country's state investment agency said here on Wednesday.

Both countries had recognized the benefits that can be leveraged through the positive relationship between trade and investment, the Board of Investments (BoI) said in a statement.

The island nation already has preferential trade agreements with India and Pakistan.

Sri Lanka had also drawn attention to possible Chinese involvement in the government's development plans, such as the Western Region Megapolis project, which includes infrastructure development, involving elevated highways, light railway and utilities as well as housing and commercial real estate.

The BoI said that the Sri Lankan government had also informed China that it was accelerating the implementation of ongoing Chinese project in the island nation and aimed to attract more Chinese tourists to visit Sri Lanka.

"Both sides recognized that China's Going Abroad strategy and Sri Lanka's very favorable location on the Maritime Silk Road provided a strong basis for strengthening Sino-Lanka economic relations," the BoI said.

It added that Sri Lanka had also paid its gratitude for China's support during the country's 30-year civil conflict as well as assistance for infrastructure development.

China has been Sri Lanka's biggest contributor of Foreign Direct Investments. Nearly 70 percent of the infrastructure projects in the country have been funded by China and built by Chinese companies.

@Godman @Gibbs , its good to see this development between Sri Lanka and China ! Greater economic integration ! Yes !

Definitely yes.. SinoLanka relationship has been stead fast for decades now, Though different governments.. Ceylon was one of the first countries to recognize the peoples republic.. Good to see it settling down once again after the initial hiccups of this current government

Also hoping to see Japan one of it's biggest benefactors coming back as well.. Last ten years have been a bit of a down turn as far as bilateral relations with Japan was concerned..

Good move sadly got delayed by the stupid people running the present government. Anyhow I highly suspect China would consider allowing friendly concessions to Sri Lanka after the diplomatic row both countries had after 2015 January.

I doubt it. China needs you as much as Sri Lanka needs China. Win - win for both the countries.

Japan is also helping the Western Region Megapolis, The original concept of the Megapolis plan was presented to the then Japanese PM Toshiki Kaifu in 1991 to get Japanese help

And japan also agreed to help kickstared the project when the plan was created in 2004 but in 2005 the govt changed

Both Japan and China will be playing a major role in WRMP
There are proposed Industrial zones and even a High-Rise Business district ,Power plants ,Waste management projects ,Residential projects etc etc. and the govt hopes to do them mostly as PPPs and private investments.
Its a very big opputunity for both Japanese and Chinese

and we are also looking for more FTAs with other countries in the region including Thailand, Vietnam ,Japan etc with the possibility of TPP which is still being studied.
Sadly we have shortage of proffesionals in the dicussions for Trade treaties.

Party-Party ties between CPC and UNP are aso being upgraded and the Minister of International trade is currently in China discussing the FTA and the upcoming visit of the Prime Minister to China

Honestly, there was nothing to mind. It's everyone's liking and opinion.
One man's meat is another's poison.

You have to learn a lot from @rott

Friends, it's unnecessary to fight among yourselves. You have bigger fish to fry.
I dont consider him a "friend" anymore. He passed the limit when he tried to sell the country and patriotism for the gain of his politicians and ran around trolling in Sri Lankan threads ranting some delusional nonsense. he is pretty much ignored/ not take seriously,
