I think the point is, that unlike China, where the VAST majority share the same ethnicity and culture (Han Chinese)... India is not dominated by any ethnic or cultural group.
The demographic factor that unites the "majority" of Indians is actually Hinduism. Since 80% of Indians are Hindu.
I can't think of any other demographic factor (race/culture/etc) that can be applied to more than 80% of the Indian population.

You probably don't know, but Hindustan has got nothing to do with Hindus/Hinduism. Turkic invaders used to refer to India as Hindustan, which literally means the land of the river Indus.
