Hong Kong Problem is not something Average Chinese nor Average West would understand.
In short, the Hong Kong people feel they were betrayed by both side.
There are people who would defend the Chinese clause, but there are also people who want to restore British Control. In between, there are people who simply, don't care.
In my time in Hong Kong, i have both seen before and after the turn over (the 1st July 1997) and what people in Hong Kong generally feel is not something normally people would understand.
Hong Kong have no social nor national identity, they don't consider they are part of Chinese (They labeled the Chinese "Mainlander") and try very hard to seperate themselve from the new immigrant forom mainland China or chinese in general, they speak different language (Cantonese/English vs PTH) and they uses different currency than mainland China (HKD vs RMB), the Hong Kogn have their own flag rather than using the Chinese flag alone (Which is special as not even a single Provice of China got its own flag)
On the other hand, Hong Kong People also hate their British master. Theink as they have abandon them and totally rip them off.
The relations is very complex and you cannot find anywhere in the world with this sort of government to government relationship. You can say Hong Kong is a colony of China and you can say it doesn't, the relation is most like Puerto Rican and American, with the only different is Puerto Rican think themselve as American in general although they speak a different language than the American.
The problem lies beneth the surface, very deep believe, as most Hong Kong people do not trust the british as they keep a lot of promise and not even one came true, and they took every available resource back to the UK and leave the Hong Kong people to its faith. However, while hating the British, they also hate the Chinese, thye expect the Chinese to do better but well, in the end, what promised as unchange for 50 years in reality, every faces in Hong Kong have been changed a thousand time when it's not only 20 years has gone.
The fact to the matter is, the love-hate relationship between China and Hong Kong is nothing you ever see in the world, there is a survey done by Ming Pao (A very prominent news paper in Hong Kong) in 2000 asking 5000 ethnic chinese people a few question regarding the nationality of Hong Kong. Which show 95% of Hong Kong resident consider themselve of Hong Kong (Not Chinese nor British) Nationality but when ask if Hong Kong people generally Chinese, they would also say yes.
I don't believe there are voices of independence in Hong Kong, people just don't care about these stuff, as long as they run as a seperate government (although the Hong Kong Government did everything the Chinese People Congress told them to), but what generally worse is Cina keep piping people down to Hong Kong, you would get disapproval of what the Chinese government do, but still as the Chinese trumpp everything and the Head of States of Hong Kong (The Chief Executive) is merely a puppet to China, the Hogn Kong people can't do anything about them.
