China gets tough against Hong Kong trouble-makers

Land reclamation would be a viable way to alleviate these conditions. The cost isn't terribly high as opposed to the benefits, but it will never go ahead with property tycoons controlling Hong Kong.

Only a quarter of H.K land is developed. 40% is national parks and natural preserves.

There's alot of hilly area that could be expanded and developed for public housing, but no, it's all taken by property developers.

I read one report which ranks HK very high on country forests and parks.

Actually roof top dwellings are things of beauty if they're built with safety and aesthetic appearances in mind; and of course have permissions from the proper building department. However most of the ones in Hong Kong are none of the above and should be torn down for safety reason alone.

Victoria Island (Hong Kong main island) and Kowloon have no more available space or land to be reclaimed for commercial or living structures. Besides if some are available trees and parks are better suited for the environment.

New Territory and Lantau has plenty of land which can be flatten or reclaim from the shallow sea bays. It's not that difficult to build government sponsored new towns for middle income families and very poor families if the politicians have politcal wills to do so. But the biggest hurdle for these new towns is what jobs can be created within convenience distances in order to attract these hungry residents.

One should bear in mind there are more than hundreds of villages in North and Yuen Long districts near Shenzhen border are emptying out of young and working age population because they all migrated oversea or to the cities for better opportunities. Many primary schools are closed due to the shortage of students. Most if not all tenement complexes are built in the vicinities of railway stations or highway exits. There are plenty of land in these area to build living quarters for millions of people without damaging the environment if jobs can be created in the vicinities.

Two criterion can draw millions away from the Hong Kong metropolis: 1) wait for developments to reach border ares or 2) when Shenzhen pay scale reaches parity. The former is impossible because HK is not China as political and people's wills are not there. The latter should happened within a decade.

Any HK'er want a sound long term investment advice? Buy up all the emptied farmlands near the border if you have some extra cash on hand.
