You are correct. But not only eastern part but all parts of India. India was divided into multiple kingdoms and empires until Britain united India. That is why English is the language that unite India.

Here is the ancient Sanskrit verse which defines Bharat(India) in ancient time which almost same today.

"uttaraṃ yatsamudrasya himādreścaiva dakṣiṇam
varṣaṃ tadbhārataṃ nāma bhāratī yatra santatiḥ
”


"The country (varṣam) that lies north of the ocean and south of the snowy mountains is called Bhārat(India); there dwell the descendants of (Emperor) Bharata."
