China applauds Russian FM remarks on South China Sea

BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday welcomed remarks by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the South China Sea disputes and reaffirmed that a solution would be found through consultation.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lu Kang made the comments at a regular press briefing in response to Lavrov's remarks made when talking with the Chinese, Japanese and Mongolian media in Moscow on Tuesday.

Lavrov reportedly said all countries involved in the disputes should follow the principles of non-use of force, and continue seeking mutually acceptable political and diplomatic solutions. He also urged external players to stop interfering in the negotiations among those involved.

"Anyone who really cares about peace and stability in the South China Sea should support China and countries directly involved to solve the disputes through negotiation and consultation, in accordance with international law, bilateral agreements and the Declaration of the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC)," Lu said.

He noted that it is not constructive for other countries or organizations to exacerbate the tense situation and sow discord.

But it's a surprise for India since Russia is demonstrating that it can play China card to balancing their relation with India for cozying with US. Russia is acting for it own interest same go for China, as for India why Russia need to address your concerns when you're cozying and buy US military harware at the expense of Russia...India is care after all it own interest. On the issue, I would say, Russia is being kissed up. Take Obama, for example, on the Syrian issue. LOL. China and Russia are equals.

China and Russia at the moment is in active strategic partnership. This could be empirically verified from cooperation in Syria to China's financial backing in Ukraine and Russia's backing and approval in ECS and SCS.

Indian can deny it; but cannot change the reality that is going on on the ground.

I don't think there is yet agreement for China and Russia to use each other's territory to support the military patrol nor refueling (I could be wrong), nevertheless it's good to enhance military cooperation with Russia and mutually support each other geopolitically. As I said it before it's in China and Russia interest to cooperate if both want to catch up US military, with their current military budget they will never able to catch up US by playing solo.

Vietnam has said that disputes in the East Vietnam Sea cannot be resolved only by bilateral settlement but also require the effort of all relevant parties and the international community.

The statement was announced by Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Le Hai Binh during a regular press meeting in Hanoi on Thursday, in response to the viewpoint of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the issues.

Minister Lavrov expressed his opposition to the internationalization of disputes over the East Vietnam Sea at a conference with Japanese, Chinese, and Mongolian media in Moscow on Tuesday.

All countries involved should avoid violence and continue to seek out a peaceful solution to the disputes via political and diplomatic channels, according to the Russian official.

He also asked external nations to stop interfering with negotiations between relevant parties to the conflict.

The viewpoint was supported by Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lu Kang, as reported by Xinhua on Wednesday.

According to Spokesperson Binh, bilateral settlement can only be successful if the matter is limited to the involvement of two nations.

“Issues that involve all relevant parties, namely the disputes over the Truong Sa [Spratly] archipelago, must be settled by all countries concerned,” the Vietnamese diplomat underscored.

Other subjects that affect the international community, including security, safety, and freedom of navigation and aviation in the maritime area, require thorough discussion and agreement from all nations that share the same interests, he asserted.

The spokesperson reiterated that Hanoi will remain consistent in dealing with the matters in the East Vietnam Sea through peaceful measures, in accordance with international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Vietnam Sea (DOC).

Regarding recent reports by U.S. media that China had sent fighter jet Shenyang J-11 to Phu Lam (Woody) Island, part of Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago, the diplomat complained that the deployment violated the Southeast Asian country’s sovereignty and endangered regional peace and stability.

Binh once again emphasized Vietnam’s indisputable territorial authority over Hoang Sa and Truong Sa.

Hanoi vehemently protests Beijing’s acts and demands that the latter cease its violations of Vietnamese sovereignty and evacuate all fighter jets out of the area, according to the spokesperson.

“As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and a vital player in the region, China has the responsibility to preserve peace and stability and comply with international law,” he said.
