It was better they changed it, now Native Americans too shouldn't be referred as Indians.

It is considered unacceptable to refer to them as Indians any more -- the preferred term is Native Americans.

It's always difficult to navigate the minefield of what is acceptable.

For African-Americans, some people consider the term "black" to be offensive, others think it's OK.

For East Asians, the word "oriental" can be used for things but not people.

India should name itself back to Mughalistan or Hindustan.

You have your Pakistan, you can use the name Mughalistan, that's not look as much artificial like P for Punjab, A for Afghania. :cheesy:

Indonesia was actually called "Dutch East Indies" under Dutch rule. Indonesia was chosen by Indonesians............

It was created by a westerner.

For this reason, they began to promote a fresh term, “Indonesia”. ... Based on the term “indu-nesians”, which was coined by a British scholar, George Windsor Earl, in Singapore in 1850 and popularized by his compatriot, James Richardson ...

Filipino was not even used to described the native peoples of the Philippines, but to describe only the children of Spanish colonizers. The modern Filipino people were called Indios by the Spanish.

By the nineteenth century the term "Filipino" referred to the Spanish insulares or those born in the Philippines. The Filipinos in general were loathingly called indios and their identity was rooted on their regional origin or ethnic affiliation: ...

Footnotes to Philippine History - Renato Perdon - Google Books

The Spaniards, the filipinos, and the insulares looked down upon the mestizos who, in turn, looked down upon the indios. As a result, the first three classes in the social ladder, who acted in the same manner when dealingwith the indios, were ...

Some Moro separatists pointed out the irony of the term. Many Spanish Friars (who were supposed to be celibate) fathered children with native women and the name Filipino was also applied to them, but not to the natives until recently.

In its bold capacity to deceive mankind, including the United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), the Philippine government continues in imposing its "cursed" Filipino identity upon the colonised Muslim and Highlander natives of Mindanao. ("Filipino" is from the immoral "king of inequities" Philip, who died of dreadful vinereal disease with worms all over his obnoxious body. Originally, "Filipinos" are the Christian Catholic children of the Spanish invaders and later in 1872 identified the Christianized Indios, who were used by the Spanish colonizers in their war with the Moros (Muslims) of Mindanao.)

From 1540 to 1560, the second and third wave Spanish invaders pursued their colonial evangelical conquests, naming the occupied islands of Visayas (later to include Luzon) 'Islas del Felipe' ('Filipinas') in honour of the immoral and racial bigot King Philip II of Spain. The aggressive Spanish colonizers further succeeded in Christianizing the Animist natives in Luzon called 'Indios', who adopted in 1872 to be addressed 'Filipinos'. Originally, the so-called Filipinos were the Luzon-born sons and daughters of the Spanish soldiers and friars, who together with the Christianized native Indios consented to become subjects of King Philip II and simply colonial slaves of Spain for about three centuries.

ok its better to call china and Taiwan, it is really hard to call in other names LOL

we write Bharat in Bangla. In English, we write India :D

Taiwan is 中華民國 Zhōnghuá Mínguó(=The Republic of China)

Mainland is 中華人民共和國 Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó(=The People's Republic of China)

Taiwan is 中華民國 Zhōnghuá Mínguó(=The Republic of China)

Mainland is 中華人民共和國 Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó(=The People's Republic of China)

Why are Zhong and Guo used at two extremes in both official names.

Similarly, China should be renamed to People Republic of Zhongguo (PRZ instead PRC).
and Hongkong, Macau too...

The word "China" is first recorded in 1516 in the journal of Portuguese explorer Duarte Barbosa.[15] The word is first recorded in English in a translation published in 1555.

And how did you, Wholegrain, had an authority to change the name of a whole nation whilst not being a member of the said nation?
And why should the philippine government who's nation is heavily Christianized should follow a random mook muslim taiwanese on the internet?

The Pinoys are too anglicanized to change their country's name. Just look at their own names -Spanish.

The psychics of the Pinoys leans more towards the west than towards the east. Could be because the majority are Catholics as opposed to Indonesians Muslims which are middle-eastern.

@KingMamba93 Pakistanis feel jealous that we retained the historical name India while there was nothing called Pakistan before 1947.

We feel jealous??? What are you smoking at...? The very existence of Indonesia is also invented by Westerners. The name Indonesia simply reflects that.

The term nusantara was cultural and historical one dated back to Majapahit Era. It might include Malaysia as Malaysian also use the word Nusantara to refer either to the country or cultural link with Indonesia

But the Philippines government has been forcing Moros call themselves Filipinos and claimed that the inhabitants of Sabah are Filipino, when most of them are not Christian.

The Philippines also claims the Spratly Islands including Taiping island (itu aba), which is controlled by Taiwan. Since you want to label our territory as part of the Philippines, we get to have a say in the name.

In China, "Chinese" is Zhongguo ren, which literally means inhabitant of the middle kingdom/state/country, person of the middle kingdom/state/country. Its just a descriptive term.

But the name Philipines and Filipino is derived from a colonial, racist King who engaged in a brutal colonization of the country which is named after him, and some of the people who fought this King's country for 300 years have to call themselves by his name?

http://philippineculture.ph/filer/Spanish-Colonial-Caste-System-in-the-Philippines.pdf

Spanish Colonial Caste System in the Philippines
When Spain came to the Philippines they instituted a racial caste system. Similar to what they instituted in Latin America.
The history of racial mixture in Filipinas (the Philippines) occurred mostly during the Spanish colonial era from the 16th to 19th century.
The same Spanish racial caste system enforced in Latin America existed in the Philippines, with a few differences.
The indigenous Malay population of the Philippines were referred to as Indios
Term- Definition:
Indio- persons of pure Filipino ancestry[/bW
Negrito- persons of pure Aeta ancestry
Sangley- person of pure Chinese ancestry
Mestizo de Sangley- person of mixed Chinese and Malay ancestry; also called chino and/or chino- mestizo
Mestizo de Bombay- person of mixed Indian and Malay ancestry
Mestizo de Espanol- person of mixed Spanish and Malay ancestry
Tornatrás- person of mixed Spanish, Malay, and Chinese ancestry
Filipinos- persons of pure Spanish descent born in the Philippines ("from Las Filipinas"); also called Insulares ("from the islands") or Criollos (Creoles)
Americanos- persons of pure Spanish descent born in Spanish America ("from the Americas")
Peninsulares- persons of pure Spanish descent born in Spain ("from the peninsula")
Mulato-50% spanish and 50% black Morisco-25%black and 75 percent spanish Albino- white pigmented black
Negro-full blooded black person

Persons classified as 'blancos' (whites) were the filipinos (persons born in the Philippines of pure Spanish descent), peninsulares (persons born in Spain of pure Spanish descent), Español mestizos (persons born in the Philippines of mixed Malay and Spanish ancestry), and tornatrás (persons born in the Philippines of mixed Malay, Chinese, and Spanish ancestry). Manila was racially segregated, with blancos living in the walled city Intramuros, un-Christianized sangleys in Parían, Christianized sangleys and mestizos de sangley in Binondo, and the rest of the 7,000 islands for the indios, with the exception of Cebu and several other Spanish posts. Only mestizos de sangley were allowed to enter Intramuros to work for whites (including mestizos de espanol) as servants and various occupations needed for the colony.

Indio was a general term applied to native Malays, but as a legal classification, it was only applied to Christianized Malays who lived in proximity to the Spanish colonies.

Persons who lived outside of Manila, Cebu, and the major Spanish posts were classified as such: 'Naturales' were Christianized Malays of the lowland and coastal towns. The un-Christianized Aetas and Malays who lived in the towns were classified as 'salvajes' (savages) or 'infieles' (the unfaithful). 'Remontados' (Spanish for 'situated in the mountains') and 'tulisanes' (bandits) were Malays and Aetas who refused to live in towns and took to the hills, all of whom were considered to live outside the social order as Catholicism was a driving force in everyday life, as well as determining social class in the colony.

Persons of pure Spanish descent living in the Philippines who were born in Spanish America were classfied as 'americanos'. Mestizos and mulatos born in Spanish America living in the Philippines kept their legal classification as such, and usually came as indentured servants to the 'americanos'. The Philippine-born children of 'americanos' were classified as 'filipinos'. The Philippine-born children of mestizos and mulatos from Spanish America were classified based on patrilineal descent.
