Chabahar Rail to Central Asia, Afghanistan, a Priority: Minister

For all those who do not seem to understand geography, here is the INSTC map.

Obviously, it will be expanded upon to include Afghanistan and the CA republics. Although despite what some believe, Afghanistan is only a small part of this. Also, consider the simple fact that ONE container ship can carry more goods than rail or road. Hence, the INSTC corridor will be more efficient for India as it can essentially ship goods to Russia, Caucuses, and CA via port now that there is increasing rail connectivity between those regions.

You are correct, India invest in Iran in rupees. In total, the Indian railway construction company has invested around 700mil US$ in building the railway connecting Iran with Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. @Max


Wait a minute, the article says this "Khademi said Iran has invested $16.5 million in construction of this railway since 2014, while the current government has assigned $2.6 million to the railroad operation."

So Iran has altogether invested less than $20 million and you are claiming India has invested $700 million in this project?

Or are you referring to some other unrelated project like Library etc?

Not because of that, we simply find it risky too. Given the number of terror attacks along the region it passes, vis Iran, rather a safe country along with it's border nations.

Pakistan= Not a single attack on any bharati on Pakistani soil.. rest i dont know how many gangadeshis afghani killed..

good luck with that, i was just comparing the routes, Pakistan have no plan to open the route for bharatis.

Do you have ANY evidence to back up your claims? You sound like those indians who claimed to have killed over 300 terrorists last week and that the indian airforce could destroy Pakistan in a few hours........:lol:
Everything I said is common sense. If you disagree, please look at a map. It doesn't take a genius to see Gwadar's location relative to China's population centers or India's proximity to Iran via sea.

Afghanistan is not a part of this route. India, Iran, and Afghanistan are planning a different trade route, but this one is intended to connect Russia to Iran via the Caucuses, and in turn India do to the proximity of its ports.

where did the article say we are building a railroad over the sea? the railroad is connecting Iran to Russia via the caucuses, and Iran is already connected to INdia via shipping route. So when a railroad connects Chabahar Iran to Russia, it doesn't take a genius to see that India, in turn has connectivity to Russia. That is the whole point of the INSTC that Pakistani are not getting.

That would be an idiotic statement to make but that comes as a rebuttal to Indian claims of Pakistani isolation.

Neither nation is getting isolated because each of them hold either economic or geopolitical value.

On the topic, the Iranian connection makes sense for now, but unless the regime in Iran tames up the only way this is profitable is through massive usage. Besides energy and niche goods, international sanctions against Iran makes this a slow moving return.

I understand Indian attempts to bypass Pakistan as a route for its trading partners but additional geopolitical considerations and that India is essentially locked between China and Pakistan makes such routes difficult to enforce.
China wants money and the hatred with Pakistan isn’t going anywhere.

On an unlikely but positive note, if in a whole the tensions between India and Pakistan subside to trade route openings then this route is essentially useless too.

No he is saying, goods are loaded in Indian ports, then shipped to Irani ports and then are loaded again on trains en route.

This will cut the transportation time significantly, especially since sea route is one of the fastest ones... :-)

Considering that the subcontinent is surrounded by natural geographic barriers separating it from the rest of Asia, land trade would never be able to solely sustain India's economy. For thousands of years India(and I mean both modern India and the subcontinent as a whole) was a maritime state taking advantage of its strategic location in the IOR. The INSTC is simply a way to connect Sea routes between India and Iran Russia and landlocked CA countries. It has nothing to do with Pakistan, it is simply a matter of the most efficient route considering India's unique economical and geographical factors.

Though I would like to see India-Pak tensions calm down to the point where at least greater trade between the region is normalized, as that will help foment the development of South Asia as a region.

BTW, there is no reason why Pakistan cannot utilize the INSTC when it is completed, as it will allow Pakistan to bypass the most problematic parts of Afghanistan that effectively block it from the rest of the CA region.

Wont be required to connect, but as I keep reiterating; to truly realize this route’s potential a western “embrace” of Iran or a regime change in Iran is required.

Are you denying that ships cannot carry more than rail and trucks? And yes, trade by sea IS the most efficient. The only problem is that Russia does not enjoy a major year-long warm water port and the CA countries are landlocked. So the best option is to connect Indo- Iranian sea lanes with CA and Caucasian raliways.
