Census 2011: Indian population increased by 181 million

That was for the whole decade, even 1-2% per year is very high. For a country like India, it should be below 1%.

got it... I was like jumping out of my seat on 17%

The good news is for the first time the growth rate is below 1.7% on annual basis! This needs to fall further.

Still higher than bangladesh and SL though! Need urgent measures.

its not because people of UP are more reproductive than other indian states....
the land of UP (Ganga- Yamuna plains) are most fertile in the world.... so resources to live life are very easily available here....

two child program wont work here.... the reason is even if we managed to implement this policy strictly we cant stop immigrants from other states and nepal from settling here....

Dont worry about the immigrants. Just concentrate on the natives. That itself will be a huge step in easing off the pressure.

Make the initiative, if it doesn't work, then fine. But if its works (I am sure it will work) then it will be a huge plus.

If you see the population growth of most of the developed states you can see they have effectively adopted the "We two, ours two" motto. Just adding more children in the family makes unnecessary pressure on the family and deprives even the other children in the same family of a better living.

census is made once in 10years ,so its 17% growth for 10years...
don't mistake it as 17% per year

Hmm fertility rate data is not out, only provisional data has been released.

Some more interesting tidbits

Interestingly, literacy rate improved sharply among females as compared to males. While the effective literacy rate for males rose from 75.26 to 82.14 per cent marking a rise of 6.9 per cent, it increased by 11.8 per cent for females to go from 53.67 to 65.46 per cent.

The gap of 21.59 per centage points recorded between male and female literacy rates in 2001 census reduced to 16.68 per centage points in 2011. The Planning Commission had set up a target of reducing this gap to 10 per centage points by 2011-12.

Although, the comprehensive report of the recently concluded 15th National Census is yet to be released, one of its highlights are claims that India's population growth in 2011 is 17.64 per cent in comparison to 21.15 per cent in 2001.
