Burning of Koran is CANCELLED

Grand Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpayegani of Iran called this proposed Quran burning an 'inhumane' act. Riiiiighttt...Bury a woman into the ground, gather up a crowd and have them stone her to death, a community participated execution, is very 'humane'. This is not about America being 'paranoid'. This is about exposing the contrasts between the West and the muslim world.

It is not about exposing contrast but this is one fanatic trying to out fanatic other!

Cristian extremists are trying hard to prove that they are tha best extremists! I don't know that this act is 'inhumane' or not but surly a disrespect of others religion. These kind of incidences gives you hint that how intolerant, and morally weak American society has become.

Sounds about right, especially when the darling of the army, the prophet Petraeus is against (for obvious and good military reasons).

Why is Austin a more tolerant than usual city? Does it have something to do with University of Texas at Austin being there?

Time to educate a Canuck on American politics (just kidding).

Although Texas, as a state, is mostly conservative the Capital, Austin, is ironically, mostly liberal. Personally I am not sure why this is the case but the University should've contributed to it.

Ahhh I think your friends are the tolerant sorts. Most people I think are more splite on the issue. As that recent pew poll shows a slim majority of Americans are opposed the 'ground zero' mosque and a lesser proportion ~38% I think are against Islam.

I really think Americans are ambiguous towards Islam. It is an inclusive society at its core but this generosity and openness has take a beating.

Eh? You mean gambit's post? What of it?

I dont know about that. Half and half on a issue of islam in a place like the U.S. is pretty bad imo. More then 70% oppose the mosque going up.

Two-thirds of those polled object to the prospective Cordoba House complex near the site of the former twin towers, including a slim majority who express strongly negative views. Eighty-two percent of those who oppose the construction say it's because of the location, although 14 percent (9 percent of all Americans) say they would oppose such building anywhere in the country.

The new results come alongside increasingly critical public views of Islam: 49 percent of all Americans say they have generally unfavorable opinions of Islam, compared with 37 percent who say they have favorable ones. That's the most negative split on the question in Post-ABC polls dating to October 2001.

Nearly a third of all Americans see mainstream Islam as encouraging violence, little changed from recent years. More, a slim majority, say it's a peaceful religion.

One has to appreciate that most Americans are against this Koran burning by this idiotic 'pastor' and the Govt has stepped in by 'covertly' pressurizing that moron to call off his 'drama'.

One has to appreciate that many Americans are against this event but
you can clearly get an idea from this thread alone that how many of them are against this event!

Religious bashing - yes. Racial bashing - its still very prevalent - some overt, most covert! Though I personally have witnessed Islam bashing by a 'dude'.

Is racism a problem where you live? I don't seem to recall any incidents when I was in NC (though admittedly it's probably harder to be a racist to a 10 year old...)

I witness Islam bashing also even as far back as the late 90's (even an incident by a friend of mine at the time)

Didn't say it was a good thing or it was right :frown: My heart goes out to Muslims living in the states right now. They must be having a really hard time with this both on the internally and externally.

I find it amusing on how 'conservativeness' in US is mistaken to be religious conservativeness. On the contrary, from what I observed this 'conservativeness' in US political arena is mostly about the economic outlook and not about religion. There is a small portion of those conservatives who keep harping on religious conservativeness. But largely it about the economic policies.

Austin being 'liberal' - in the sense of foreign matters or religious outlook can be attributed to the presence of UT and a large number of foreign students.

Not exactly a problem. But I have seen many people in conversations referring to other races with speech filled with innuendos. Thats why I said - mostly covert. They assume that I being of south Asian origin cannot understand their insinuations.

*shakes head* That's pretty childish AND stupid if they assume an Indian person can't understand English. I also remember a really sad case right after 9/11 where an Indian man was beaten to death because some idiots thought he was a Muslim...

Just north-east, 10-hrs drive, from you. ;) - the Natural State.

Hehe I'm in St. Louis right now visiting family, so I'm about a 5 hours drive south from you.

I guess I've been exposed to mostly good people in my life then (which makes me a bit gullible on some of the matters). That can't be a bad thing!

Sorry. Not exactly this thread! You will find Solomon2 and Gambit defending this event on thread related to same topic. Only these two are active Americans on this forum and both of them are defending this act.

Its not that they think we dont understand English, its the 'code words' that they use. Like for instance, I heard a person talking about how a meat which he wouldnt like but would be considered a delicacy if cooked in a particular way - further adding "if you get my drift". Insinuations such as those which may be called as 'insider talk'.

Never been there, yet. Its North from where I am ;)

They are defending the Constitutional right of the person, meaning the US constitution. Not the act itself. You need to realize the difference here.
Btw, they also "support" - meaning dont protest against - US flag burning by some morons, because its a right guaranteed and protected by the US constitution.
