BSF DIG killed in IED blast triggered by militants

A top Border Security Force official of the rank of deputy inspector general was killed, while some other persons of his security squad including the driver were injured in an IED blast triggered by militants on Indo-Pak International Border in Ramgarh sector of Samba border district in Jammu region on Monday morning.

Incidentally, the spot where the IED blast occurred, had also witnessed shelling from Pakistan side in the wee hours on Monday, official sources said.

A BSF spokesman said that the firing had occurred on at around 2.00 am, wherein the intense firing from the Pakistan soil had taken place for over half an hour.

However, the firing had fallen silent after half an hour, the BSF spokesman said adding that a search operation had been undertaken by the BSF troops in the wee hours to carry out a combing operation to look for possibility of any militant having infiltrated taking cover of the wee-hour firing.

Later in the morning, the senior BSF official DIG O P Tanwar went to the firing spot in Ramgarh sector, wherein his vehicle came under the impact of an IED near the fence.

Top BSF officials and police officials have rushed to the spot to make an on spot assessment.

BSF to protest with Pak Rangers after DIG killed in IED blast Protests dont achieve much. I believe, in such national security matters, there should be multiple strong retaliations in kind or otherwise, for the worse!

The BSF will lodge a protest with Pakistan Rangers at a flag meet after a DIG of the force was killed in the blast triggered by militants near the Indo-Pak border in Samba sector.

"A flag meeting will be held with Pakistan Rangers where a protest will be lodged," a senior BSF officer at the force headquarters here said.

52-year-old DIG O P Tanwar had gone to the area to conduct a combing operation this morning after the post came under fire from across the border since last night.

During the combing operation, a blast took place, killing Tanwar and leaving two others badly injured.

Just tell me we are already engaged in a war. Why would we attack you at this time?.

May soul of the dead Border DIG Rest In Peace. Report doesn't place blame of shelling or killing on PDF. I would think that the protest is that the PDF did not aprehend these militants soon enough. Perhaps the strategy of the Taliban has now changed. Start a war between India and Pakistan and get the PDF off our ***** :undecided:

All the reports are stating that the car went over a landmine. Is it not possible that own landmine may have done this? The IB has quite a few places that have been mined by both sides.

Although not discounting militants, but here is what the AP is stating:

An injured Border Security Force soldier is rushed to a hospital after a landmine explosion in Jammu November 16, 2009. A senior Indian security officer was killed on Monday when his jeep ran over a landmine near the Pakistan border of disputed Kashmir, police said. Police blamed separatist militants for the powerful blast in which three border guards were also wounded. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Secondly, only the Indian side reports of "heavy shelling" by Pakistan and nothing of the sort makes it in the Pakistani press despite the fact that on the IB, no one's shooting goes unchallenged. The other side responds which in turn is used by the local media in each country to show their innocence and the other side's transgression.

So I think there is more to it than meets the eye. As unpalatable as it may sound to some, there is a possibility that this was an own goal. At least this point cannot be discounted so easily given the fact that Pakistan has very little to gain by keeping the Eastern borders hot by such exchanges shelling etc. when it is dealing with a hot situation on the Western borders.

Actually this may be a possibility!

But even if some areas on both sides of the IB/LOC are mined, dont the authorities know the detailed layout of these fields, especially on the home front? (They dont just blindly layout mines now, do they?). If so, do you think that any personnel, least of all the DIG, would be allowed to venture in such an area without adequate information/warning/protection?

IIRC, the IA suffered a lot of casualties from mines it laid itself during Operation Parakram.

DIG BSF killed in IED blast in Samba, two injured

Deputy Inspector General of BSF was on Monday killed and two other force officials seriously injured in a blast triggered by militants near the Indo-Pak border in Samba district's Ballad post.

52-year-old DIG O P Kanwar had gone to the area to conduct a combing operation this morning after the post came under fire from across the border since last night, Senior Superintendent of Police, Samba, Raghubir Singh told PTI.

During the combing operation, a blast took place, killing Kanwar, a BSF cadre officer, and leaving two others badly injured, he said.

Kanwar, who was DIG (Headquarters, BSF Frontier, Jammu), was officiating as DIG of the operational area in Samba.

As per preliminary information, terrorists had planted an improvised explosive device (IED) on the Indian side and taken cover at a safe place in Pakistan territory. As soon as the militants found out that a senior officer was visiting the area, the IED was detonated in which the DIG was killed, official sources said.

They said there has been intermittent cross-border small arms firing on the forward Ballad post since last night. The BSF troops have replied to the firing, they said.

So they were hiding in Pakistani side of the LoC and as soon as they came to know Indian BSF DIG was coming they detonated it

Need to wait for more information about cause of Death.

of-topic:

You quote Indian media to counter Indian media and accuse Indian media of trolling what a weird thinking.

IIRC, the IA suffered a lot of casualties from mines it laid itself during Operation Parakram.

Operation Parakram was a hastily put-together knee jerk response to a terrorist attack hoping for a face saving grace by the Govt of the day. So it is possible that mines were laid in haste and not properly documented. result - unwanted avoidable casualties.

Anyhow, doesn't some protocol require that professional armies document in detail the minefields?

Coming to the topic on hand, unlike the Op Parakram, the IB/LOC has long been a sensitive area and has been mined for a long time. They ought to have detailed maps of the minefields and if they do then the DIG going there would be a serious lapse. OTOH, if they already knew there are no mines there to let a DIG venture into the area, there would remain only one possibility for such a loss!

So you think it is fun to put up an IED and see how it blows up humans, do you?

You are a sick individual, ma'm. Seek help before you go over the edge.

The fun is how your Military claimed that the persons had fixed the explosive, got cover on Pakistani side of the LoC and then they as soon as found about BSF DG visit they exploded the explosive. Huh more than funny.

Do you think its a childs play to run and cross the LoC and then find out about the visit and then explode it from across LoC.

:cheesy:

seem you guys are sick collectivly
