Rio Olympics 2016: Windsurfer Nick Dempsey wins historic silver medal in RS:X

Dempsey won silver for the second Games in a row
Britain's Nick Dempsey retired on a high after becoming the first male windsurfer to win three Olympic medals.

Dempsey, 36, won silver in the RS:X at Rio 2016, following a bronze in 2004 and silver in London four years ago.

The two-time world champion was guaranteed second place behind Dutch gold medallist Dorian van Rijsselberghe going into Sunday's medal race.

Van Rijsselberghe capped his victory by winning the medal race, with Dempsey coming in fourth.

Dempsey, competing in his fifth Olympic Games, celebrated his 36th birthday on Saturday knowing he was already assured of a silver medal ahead of the final race of his career.

Van Rijsselberghe, 27, beat the Briton to gold in 2012 and had an unassailable advantage of 23 points going into the medal race.

Dempsey's coach Dom Tidey said: "What a way to go out. There was no stress and he could soak it all up. Hopefully it's not his last race at an Olympics, I'm going to try to convince him to do another!"

All the talk now is of whether British sailing’s golden couple try to add to the family haul — which now consists of two golds, a silver and the bronze which Dempsey claimed in Athens — in Rio de Janeiro in four years’ time.

Dempsey, whose windsurfing class has been controversially axed from the 2016 programme, a decision which is the subject of a legal challenge from the International RS:X Class Association, dropped a broad hint that he would at least like to try his hand at kite-boarding, the class which has replaced his own.

“I’m going to reflect and then I’m going to announce what I’m going to do,” he said before adding: “I have ordered some kites. I might go on a little kite-surfing holiday.”

But with Ayton also said to be hankering after a return to Olympic sailing, Dempsey admitted things were still up in the air.

He has already ruled out a joint assault on the new mixed catamaran class — “It would end in tears,” he said last week. “My tears.” — and says he couldn’t imagine calling time on his own career.

“I’m not sure I would,” he laughed when asked if he would be prepared to look after the children as Ayton has done. “She is a better parent than me. She is far better at looking after the kids than I am. I don’t really fancy being a full-time dad. I don’t know how she does it on her own. I could not do it. But yeah, we need to discuss that more.”

For now, he is just looking forward to spending at least some time with his family, and delivering on that promise to Thomas. “It [the medal] will hang on the end of his bed I’m sure and get thrown down the stairs,” he said.

Bryony Shaw, a bronze medallist in Beijing, finished seventh in the women’s RS:X but Britain’s sailors are well placed to pick up medals in three more classes. Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell, sailing in their first Games in the men’s 470, are assured of silver at least.

Heading into Thursday’s medal race they trail the Australian pair by just four points.

Their female counterparts Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark also lie second in class, four points behind the New Zealand pair with two more fleet races today before Friday’s medal race.

And the Match Race Girls, Annie Lush and Lucy and Kate Macgregor, are tied at 1-1 in their quarter-final with Russia. The best-of-five series will be completed on Wednesday.

LOL! Max Whitlock is a legend! Oh my God, he got gold in the pommel horse.

Gymnast Max Whitlock won his second Olympic gold medal of the day by pipping British team-mate Louis Smith in the men's pommel horse at Rio 2016.

Whitlock, 23, earlier gained Britain's first-ever Olympic gold in the sport in the men's floor exercise.

Smith, 27, had to settle for silver - as he did at London 2012.

Whitlock's double success in the Olympic Arena helped Britain move up to 13 gold medals in Brazil, taking their overall tally to 35.

The penultimate man to go in the final, Whitlock scored 15.966 to push Smith, on 15.833, down to second place.

Alexander Naddour of the United States took bronze with 15.700.

Whitlock has now won five Olympic medals, having earned two bronzes - in the team event and the pommel horse - at London 2012.

But Smith is still searching for gold at the Games after winning bronze at Beijing 2008 and a team bronze alongside Whitlock four years ago.

Smith was left in tears as he received his medal on the podium, before warmly embracing his team-mate as he stepped up.

"Max has been an absolute star in this competition. He's been incredible," Smith told BBC Sport.

"It's hard to keep composure when team-mate has just won a medal. I just tried to keep focus."

Well done Justin Rose, the UK wins the first golf gold!!!!!!!

Great Britain's Justin Rose became golf's first Olympic champion since 1904 by beating Henrik Stenson to gold in a thrilling final round at Rio 2016.

Rose, 36, was level with Stenson on 15 under par after 17 holes but the Swede bogeyed the last while Rose sank a birdie putt to win by two shots.

The 2013 US Open champion closed with a four-under-par 67 to win on 16 under.

Open champion Stenson (68) took silver with American Matt Kuchar carding a 63 to take bronze on 13 under.

"That felt better than anything I've ever won. It was the best tournament I've ever done," said Rose.

"Hopefully we've shown Brazil what golf is about. I'm glad it was close. Not for my nerves. For golf."

It was the perfect outcome following the realisation of a seven-year dream for Rose, who secured Britain's 12th gold medal in Rio.

While several other high-profile golfers had decided not to compete at the Olympics, Rose had relished the prospect of becoming an Olympian since the moment golf's return to the Games was confirmed in 2009.

Wind surfing silver, thanks Nick Dempsey, you ended your career on a high. @mike2000 is back cheers for mentioning that first bro

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/37066092

Britain's Nick Dempsey is guaranteed silver in the men's Olympic RS:X windsurfing before the final day of competition on Sunday.

Dutch sailor Dorian van Rijsselberghe, who won gold in 2012, will retain his title.

Dempsey, 35, won silver in London, having taken a bronze in Athens in 2004, and will retire after this event.

"Tomorrow's a day off and my birthday, and Sunday is my last ever race so I'm going to want to win," he said.

"I feel very happy to have won a silver medal," Dempsey added. "It's cool, it's amazing.

"It's nice to have had a good spell at the top and be competitive over five Olympic Games. I'm pretty proud of that.

"I'm unemployed as of next week - I'll have to get a job. I'd like to do photography if I can make it work, and a bit of coaching. I'd like some new challenges and new goals and I want to keep being driven in life and achieve something else."

Friday's result is subject to protest and both Dempsey and Van Rijsselberghe will still have to sail in Sunday's medal race.

Team GB Justin Rose just do it magnificently, the swede have no answer, but I got to say Kuchak come up on bronze was a surprise for me, was going to expect Australia win bronzes

Man, now the Chinese here on PDF will try and cry foul to the Brits too...
