British olympic team success and news

Just sensational from Mo Farah, the first British athlete ever to win three gold medals on the track. If the true test of a great athlete is how they perform on the big occasion then Farah is right up there with the very best.

What is even more impressive is that our boys and girls are excelling in many various different fields unlike many other countries who excel in just a few fields, reason as @waz pointed we are second only to the U.S in terms of winning medals in diverse sport ranges/fields. :)

Our girl Jessica Ennis has won silver in the heptathlon, a valiant attempt hun, but I guess when younger athletes come and you have reached your peak it happens. Thank you for your service to your country.

Great Britain's Jessica Ennis-Hill narrowly failed to retain her Olympic heptathlon title as she won silver behind Nafi Thiam at Rio 2016.

Ennis-Hill, 30, won the 800m - the final discipline of the competition - but it was not enough to overtake Belgian Thiam who won by 35 points.

Canadian Brianne Theisen-Eaton won bronze, with Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson finishing sixth.

After the event, Ennis-Hill hinted she could now retire.

"It's going to be a tough decision, I'm going to go away and think about it," she said. "At this moment, I'm tired and emotional, it's a big decision."

Four-time Olympic gold medallist Michael Johnson told BBC Sport that he thinks Ennis Hill's career "is done".

The American added: "Why would you come back? She won at the Olympics, so the World Championships in London in 2017 will pale in comparison."

Bro when our boxing and tennis medals come through we will actually overtake or equal the USA!!! We are on equal footing with China now in terms of diversity. This is amazing for our nation of only 65 million people.

To be fair he doesn't say anything now and wants to keep the peace.
However there were a few people who thought we were little britain and we were nothing after Brexit. Just you wait for the thread I have prepared for this.
Let's just concentrate on support for our athletes. :-)

Funny thing is those people who say that are nowhere near us in amost any field you look at.
Anyway, you are right let's focus on our athletes for now.,

I'm just sorry for Jessica Ennis, I was expecting her to retain her Olympic title instead of Coming second, having dominated the heptathlon for so long . She is still the world's greatest female athlete. Since the heptathlon is the most demanding sports in the Olympics by far as it's involves many different event at once. She needs a Well deserved rest after a long period at the top and being a mother. Cheers to this iron lady.

Let's hope Justin Rose becomes first Olympic golf champion 112 years :-)

Final Round started
A silver medal for Justin Rose would be nice ;-)
But Stenson needs to make those putts.
Both at -14 after Stenson misses two birdie putts of two meters.

Of course those people are no where near us now, they were never in the past and never ever will be. That's why we used to laugh at them.
Yes Ennis is great and the lady leaves a great legacy. Plenty of other females will follow in her foot steps. She needs a rest.
Looking forward to seeing Muhammad Ali in the boxing for team GB tomorrow, a fantastic boxer and great medal prospect.

We just won a gold medal in the men floor exercise gymnastic. Max Whitlock(already world reigning champion in the pommel horse gymnastic event) did it again.
WOW...our boys and girls are making us soooo proud. That number 2 position is getting closer and closer .....China better watch out. :D:P

Congrats to Brazil who took silver and bronze. Our Max Whitlock will be aiming for another gold in another gymnastic event a few hours from now. :)

Gymnast Max Whitlock won Olympic gold in the men's floor exercise to create British gymnastics history for the second time at Rio 2016.
Rio-Olympic-Games-2016-Day-Nine.jpg

On Wednesday, the 23-year-old won GB's first all-around gymnastics Olympics medal in 108 years as he took bronze.

Now he has won the nation's first Olympic medal in the men's floor after earning a score of 15.633.

It was GB's 11th gold medal in Brazil, taking the overall tally to 31.

Day-by-day guide to what's on
Latest medal table
Who is your Olympic body match?
Whitlock finished ahead of Brazilian pair Diego Hypolito (15.533) and Arthur Mariano (15.433), who took silver and bronze respectively.

Fellow Briton Kristian Thomas finished seventh with a mark of 15.058.

Whitlock has now won four Olympic medals, having claimed two bronzes - in the team event and the pommel horse - at London 2012.
Gymnastics-Artistic-Olympics-Day-9.jpg

He is also the favourite to win gold in the pommel horse final later on Sunday (19:34 BST), but faces competition from 2012 silver medallist team-mate Louis Smith.

Whitlock won silver at the 2015 World Championships behind Japan's Kenzo Shirai, who was expected to be the man to beat in Brazil.

The Briton, who was the third gymnast to go in Sunday's final, set the standard with a virtually flawless routine.

Whitlock faced an anxious wait to see if he would end up on the podium with five more men still to go.

But he knew by the time 19-year-old Shirai took to the mat for the penultimate routine that he was assured of a medal.

Shirai, aiming to become the first Japanese man to win the event since 1968, produced an error-strewn performance, scoring 15.366 to go fourth.

It meant only American Samuel Mikulak could deny Whitlock gold and, after a tense few moments, the Briton's success was confirmed.

Beth Tweddle, former Commonwealth Games champion and BBC Sport analyst:

"I think it helped Max going so far up in the order. He was then able to just sit back and relax.

"He looked more nervous waiting for the result than he did before his routine.

"We were hoping for a sneaky bronze but where he was brilliant others faltered."

So Whitlock's favourite event the pommel horse is still to come. Hopefully it will be another gold for him:)
