You can wish and dream all you like. China is the real engine of BRICS. Not India. Secondly, India is a Western a$$licker. India is a strange bedfellow in BRICS. India has no positive role to play in BRICS. It is only participating as a spoiler on US behalf.

Why Indonesia did not join BRICS

Indonesia has a tricky balancing act to pull off right now. Like many countries, it’s stuck between a Chinese rock and an American hard place. This is what’s at stake.

Last month’s BRICS summit in South Africa ended with Indonesia not joining the group. Some wondered why the country did not become a new member. After all, Indonesia is a Global South nation with one of the world’s largest populations and economies, and a history of developing country leadership: The first large-scale Asian-African get-together, the Bandung Conference, took place in 1955 in Bandung, Indonesia.

After participating in the summit, Indonesian President Joko Widodo made it clear that his administration was “reviewing and considering the country’s possibility of joining” the group, according to a government statement.

“We intend to conduct a thorough study and calculation. We do not want to make any hasty decision,” said the president — popularly known as Jokowi — on August 24.

“To become a new member of the BRICS group, a country must submit a letter of expression. Until now, we have not submitted that.”

Tri Tharyat — the Indonesian foreign ministry’s director general for multilateral cooperation — told The China Project on August 29 that he had no further comment on BRICS because “the president had made an official statement.” He did not respond when asked when the government would submit the letter.

“Incredible” ties

Jokowi said, “Our relations with the five BRICS member countries are also incredible, especially on economic cooperation,” referring to Indonesia’s strong relations with the group’s founders — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The president also said on August 24: “We must reject trade discrimination. Industrial downstreaming should not be obstructed. We all must keep fighting for equal and inclusive cooperation.”

“BRICS can serve as ‘the forefront’ to fight for development justice and fairer world governance reformation.”

As the world’s fourth-most-populous state, Indonesia has a rising economic and diplomatic influence. The country is a G20 member and hosted last year’s summit during its presidency — attended by China’s leader, Xí Jìnpíng 习近平 — in Bali in November.

Earlier this month, Southeast Asia’s largest economy welcomed the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and other countries — including Chinese Premier Lǐ Qiáng 李强 — at a Jakarta summit under the republic’s chairmanship.

Yet Indonesia has substantial trade relations with individual BRICS founding countries.

According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS) government agency, the country of over 275 million people exported goods worth a FOB value of over $65.8 billion to China in 2022 — the largest of all countries listed. It had an export value of above $23.3 billion to India, over $1.3 billion to Russia, more than $1 billion to South Africa, and over $1.4 billion to Brazil.

Indonesia’s Vice Trade Minister Jerry Sambuaga said in mid-August that the country would be able to explore “nontraditional” markets in Africa and Latin America by making South Africa and Brazil entry points to those regions, respectively, if it were part of the BRICS.

Out of all BRICS founding members, Indonesia also has more extensive investment ties with the People’s Republic. According to the country’s Investment Ministry, mainland China was the second-largest investor throughout 2022, with $8.2 billion, and Hong Kong was third at $5.5 billion. The other original BRICS members did not make the top 20 list that year.

Nur Rachmat Yuliantoro, the head of the Department of International Relations at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta, said Indonesia needed to consider “good relations with these four countries” besides China, although “it cannot be denied that China is one of the central powers, if not the most important, of BRICS.”

“Indonesia must not depend only on its good relations with China, but it must also pay attention to the interests of other countries so that their representation in BRICS is respected,” he said. :-)

Siding with any party?

Johanes Herlijanto, the co-founder and chairman of the Indonesian Sinology Forum (FSI) — an NGO that researches Indonesia-China ties — in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, said, “China’s dominance in BRICS, as well as Russia’s support, will put Indonesia in a difficult situation if we join without doing calculations.”

“If BRICS’ main power China pulls Indonesia to show its side, this is certainly not advantageous for Indonesia. That is why Indonesia’s statement that we are still considering is the right statement,” he told The China Project.

“The problem is that BRICS in recent years has behaved like a bloc, which is certainly not in line with Indonesia’s principle of maintaining a neutral position.”

Rachmat of the UGM said the United States and its allies could see Indonesia “in a disadvantageous context” if the latter joined the BRICS.

“Therefore, what is best for Indonesia at the moment is to wait and see first, not to rush into joining the BRICS, while trying to maintain broad support for its foreign policy,” he said.

Indonesia has implemented a “free and active” foreign policy; the principle drives it not to side with any major global power. By extension, Rachmat said the country’s main challenge in becoming a BRICS member would be to “convince the international community, especially the United States and its allies, that this participation does not violate non-aligned principles and is aimed solely at Indonesia’s national interests.”

FSI’s Johanes said, “If Indonesia becomes part of the BRICS, it will add to the strength of this group, and of course, has the potential to change the geopolitical balance, although it all depends on Indonesia’s own attitude.”

“Can Indonesia, if it joins [the BRICS], only focus on taking benefits for Indonesia, without participating in issues that can potentially escalate tensions?” he said.

Yet Rachmat said the impression — if Indonesia joined the BRICS — that the country “sided with China” and became “anti-West” would be misleading.

“Indonesia does not need to be afraid of being labeled as an anti-Western country, considering that Indonesia’s geopolitical and geoeconomic potentials cannot be dismissed,” he told The China Project.

“The United States and its allies, as well as China and other BRICS countries, have and will continue to view Indonesia as a country with great regional influence.”

look since NAM, which was similar to BRICS, India is always anti-West. its foundation of India since Cold War :-)

if India is with Russia-China, then its true since BRIC also, even since S.Africa was not included. India as a founder member of NAM, strongest ally of Soviet Union during that period..... foundation of India is anti-West, with Soviet Union, who founded Non Aligned Treaty in behalf of SU
India can only be against West-US, since last century also. while Indonesia couldn't prove the same 'against' of US/Weste like India.
India can only be on the other side of Cold War, which Indonesia is struggling to show....

Now they are back to their unreliable BRICS after the Saudis have put the relationship with the Israelis in storage.
we have got Saudis with us. its now with Egypt, UAE, Iran and hopefully with our Cold War ally Kazakhstan, and Algeria also, the next expansion.
i find, with Indonesia, Saudis could be as big Islamic face that it could be leveling C, and above I and R of Brics.
even without Indonesia, Saudis as Islamic face would be considered above I and R of BRICS, with nearly levelling C also :-)

i just saw wikipedia, did Indonesia 'rejected' the offer? whats going on?hope we won't see any SA type news, we hope.....
whats NATO doing? are their spies taking our partners out? :-)

Softly rejecting, it is stated in our President YT channel that our President is still considering the offer.

Despite so, Indonesia is always neutral and has good relation with almost all countries

Recent meeting, 17 October 2023

Now they are back to their unreliable BRICS after the Saudis have put the relationship with the Israelis in storage.

SA is a promised expansion of BRICS. India is as bad as China and Russia. Brazil is also bad but need help of BRIC. S.Africa keep BRICS with it.
taking out SA from NATO, now its Saudis duty is to show strength of Islamic nations as one face in Brics. if things continue, Indonesia may also be convinced in future ......

BRICS is a blanket term for economically growing nations. As most of you know it was formulated by JP Morgan to classify developing nations in this region.
It's an economic/trade organisation, nothing more nothing less. It's not a power bloc or an bloc where members share a similar ideology or geopolitical future.
There have been problems just deciding a common BRICS currency, USD is just too strong.

we see in news that Brazil is very much keen for common currency, which most of Brics members would also favour.

its something, brics will also do everything for 'multi-polar world'. its simply as powerful as G20 now, and a certain resistance to US/NATO.

brics will always be favouring developing nations, and now more powerful than before. its meeting is usually organised parallel to brics meeting during G20 summits. and now we find SA is with us as Islamic Face with CHina-India-Russia-Brazil-S.Africa. we are now more powerful with 6 new members :-)

Actually India should voice its protest against China aggression by quitting SCO.
BRICS without China and India will not have any meaning.
Russia
, South Africa and Brazil are not really emerging economies.

there is no meaning of BRICS if even any of China,, India, Russia is missing. one platform for CHina, India, Russia and you all are with us. this is BRICS, and more the number you all are in brics, more its good.
whether in Space Research, Defence as below, world trade, influence in UN with Veto holding by China-Russia and influence of India seen since Non Aligned Movement etc. ..... i find there are only 4 Industrialized nations in world, one US and others China, India, Russia.....

you find Chinese Engineers helping Pakistani projects while India help development in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhuta etc. similarly Russia isn't helped by any other countries. India, CHina, Russia are true industrialised nations with US 'only', only four countries in world. similar to the news as below, whether in Space research also, only these top 4 of world. any nuclear race NPT etc.? once Mr S.Hussain won a talk that, "the country, India, who didn't sign NPT was more powerful than those who signed NPT." :-)
a true nation structure, wide range of Industries China, India, Russia have and also US. i was discussing, European Space Agency will never be able to beat any of the 4 countries. Eurozone or ASEAN as a region itself will not be able to beat the said 4 countries :disagree:

China beats US in ultimate military strength index while India comes in fourth

China

China has the strongest military force in the world according to a study released on March 21 by defence website Military Direct. The study said "ultimate military strength index" was calculated after taking into consideration various factors including budgets, number of inactive and active military personnel, total air, sea, land and nuclear resources, average salaries, and weight of equipment. China has the strongest military in the world, scoring 82 out of 100 points in the index, it noted. China wins in a sea war with 406 ships vs Russia with 278 and the USA or India with 202, it said.

USA

"The USA, despite their enormous military budgets, comes in 2nd place with 74 points. The world's biggest military spender with a budget of USD 732 billion per year is the USA, it noted, adding that China comes second with USD 261 billion, followed by India at USD 71 billion.

Russia

Russia comes in third with a score of 69. The Russian Federation wins in a land war with 54,866 vehicles vs USA with 50,326 and China with 41,641," it mentioned.

India

India is fourth with a score of 61. Soldiers are not paid relatively highly but it is not known whether the report takes account into other benefits and various tax rebates. India has 202 ships.

IMO, BRICS should start a mini-UN already, a lot more will be solved.

The current UN is dysfunctional due to East vs. West locking head.

BRICS has almost defeated G20, i find. BRICS with 6 new members have defeated G20 group :-)

BRICS could be Bangladesh, Rwanda, Ivory Coast, Costa Rica and Somalia. It is anything you wanna to be :enjoy:

look, there are only 3 countries who lead Brics, the China, India, Russia, remaining, you all can come.
we have got Saudi Arabia with us with Egypt, Iran, UAE with hopefully Algeria-Bangladesh-Kazakhstan. here SA is expected to defeat I & R as a 'one' Islamic face in future :-)

the future currency is favoured greatly by Brazil-Argentina, the 'one' Brics currency which would be used for oil trade by SA-UAE-Russia and China-India buy oil-gas in same currency....

having more numbers in brics will finally help us...

BRICS could be Bangladesh, Rwanda, Ivory Coast, Costa Rica and Somalia. It is anything you wanna to be :enjoy:

here we have map of 'would be' Brics. here we find, the Indonesia will finally fall on the stings of "Iron Law", means, they will finally join more powerful summits (than G20)

how do you see the analysis as below? i find US/NATO is no-match to Brics altogether? :coffee:

Synopsis
Speaking at a press conference here, Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh said India is importing 42 per cent of its total oil requirement from Russia by paying in Chinese Yuan and in a way is promoting the currency of the country "

"In the year 2020-21, we bought oil worth Rs 7,000 crore from Russia, now we are buying oil worth Rs 89,000 crore in 2022-23. This figure increased by more than 300 per cent from that in 2021-22," Vallabh said.

i think we may consider Chinese Yuan as BRICS currency, straight away. China has enough foreign reserve to defend Yuan, its deserving, and hence we now has the BRICS currency, the Yuan :turkey:

India does what is in its interest. Even if it means paying with Yuan. Our congress party is filled with dumbos like its leader. So don't worry, Modi is not petty.

ask them, " whats US$? how it help us?"
while Oil worth at least above 7000crore from Russia in Yuan help us. this may be considered as Oil for government agencies, industries, the needed time oil from Russia in BRICS currency Yuan.

Chinese yuan beats Euro, is 2nd most used currency in global payments system SWIFT, :turkey: reflecting China's growing economic power

As of September 2023, the yuan accounted for 5.8% of international payments, up from 4.82% in August, which is the highest share the Chinese currency has held in the last five years, according to SWIFT system data.

The Chinese yuan has surpassed the euro to become the world's second-most used currency in SWIFT trade settlements, :turkey: according to data from the international SWIFT system. This marks a significant milestone in China's efforts to internationalise its currency.

As of September 2023, the yuan accounted for 5.8% of international payments, up from 4.82% in August. This is the highest share the yuan has held in the last five years. Despite this increase, the US dollar remains the dominant currency in global trade, with an 84.15% share in September, a slight increase from 83.95% in August.

The euro now ranks third in international payments, with its share decreasing to 5.43% in September from 6.43% in August. The Japanese yen and the Saudi rial follow, ranking fourth and fifth, respectively.

This development comes as China continues to expand its economic influence globally. Despite the yuan's share of global payments remaining small compared to the size of China's economy, it has seen a steady increase from 1.81% about five years ago.

The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) is a Belgian cooperative society that provides services related to the execution of financial transactions and payments between banks worldwide. The US dollar and the euro have traditionally dominated SWIFT payments, making up more than seven out of 10 payments in 2023.

The rise of the yuan in international trade settlements is seen as a reflection of China's growing economic power and its efforts to make the yuan a global reserve currency. However, the yuan's share is still negligible compared to the dollar's 46.6%.

China introduced the yuan as its currency system in the late 1800s, and it has had a currency peg since 1994. This peg, along with China's robust export economy, has helped the yuan gain traction in global trade.

The recent data from SWIFT indicates a shift in the global financial landscape, with the yuan's growing prominence signalling China's increasing role in international trade and finance.
