China completely dominates table tennis and does very well in weightlifting, badminton and to a less degree swimming. We also dominate basketball in Asia. These are all popular sports/activities that ordinary people actually participate. I have never been to a college residence hall without table tennis facility. Badminton is far easier to play without a dedicated field than tennis, and most Chinese family I know have a set of badminton gear. Most gyms have free weights and swimming pools. Basketball courts are common in urban areas. These are what I call people's sports. National successes in them inspire people to be more active. I don't know what national success in F1 inspires people to do, overspeeding?

F1 is not just about speeding but perhaps that's another Communist myth peddled there since the Chinese aren't good at it. - F1 involves a lot of tactics, decision making, engineering and strategy. Again, I cited 5 top sports in the world watched by people and China is a laggard in ALL of them. India is near the top in 2 of them globally, and near the top in Asia in 1 of them. I am sure China with its 1.5 billion people can one day catch up.

India is at the top of field hockey globally only if by 'the top' you mean the 4th in the FIH ranking. Care to tell me what is the medal below Bronze called? Air? Is that the reason why India men's field hockey team had nothing to show for in Olympics since 1980 (which was boycotted by the big players)? That India's medals were all made of air?
