Body mass index of Indian 19-year-olds among lowest in 200 countries

China completely dominates table tennis and does very well in weightlifting, badminton and to a less degree swimming. We also dominate basketball in Asia. These are all popular sports/activities that ordinary people actually participate. I have never been to a college residence hall without table tennis facility. Badminton is far easier to play without a dedicated field than tennis, and most Chinese family I know have a set of badminton gear. Most gyms have free weights and swimming pools. Basketball courts are common in urban areas. These are what I call people's sports. National successes in them inspire people to be more active. I don't know what national success in F1 inspires people to do, overspeeding?
F1 is not just about speeding but perhaps that's another Communist myth peddled there since the Chinese aren't good at it. - F1 involves a lot of tactics, decision making, engineering and strategy. Again, I cited 5 top sports in the world watched by people and China is a laggard in ALL of them. India is near the top in 2 of them globally, and near the top in Asia in 1 of them. I am sure China with its 1.5 billion people can one day catch up.

Yes because ordinary people do a lot of 'tactics, decision making, engineering and strategy' when they drive.

China doesn't care about cricket (who outside the Commonwealth does?) or hockey. And thank you for thinking India being 'near the top in Asia' makes it good and Chinese basketball being the top in Asia makes it a laggard. I'm flattered you hold China to a much higher standard than India, as you should. In any case, care to enlighten us about in which two of the five is India near the top globally and in which is India near top in Asia?

There is no reason to stop the list at Top 5. Table tennis is top 10 in all such lists and China absolutely dominates it.

What China cares or doesn't care about is irrelevant. China isn't #1 in Asia in basketball either - it's ranked # 4 in the Asia Zone.

I hope this isn't another lie that the Communist Party feeds its people since they are laggards in top global sports.

Of course people take decisions based on strategy in the democratic civilized world where the State doesn't tell you what to do.

You shouldn't really be flattered since I am not holding China to a higher standard.

India is at the top globally in Cricket and Hockey and is one of the best in Asia in Tennis.

You can clutch at straws and go beyond the top 5 if it helps you feel better about being a laggard in the top 5 global sports.

Not really. Maybe that's the narrative peddled in a Communist nation because it is terrible in the world's most competitive and popular sports. Even if one takes niche popular sports with a global presence like F1 or Billiards or Chess - China doesn't have a Kartikeyan/Chandok or a Geet Sethi or a Vishwanathan Anand. It's sad really - a country with 1.5 billion people and has to console itself with medals in sports 99% of human race is uninterested in.
Olympis Games are the world most recognized sports event, it's not a communist sports meet, Indians are just incredible, ridiculing Olympics to show how great an athletic India is. Do you sincerely believe the world believes India is a sports giant? If so, forget about Chinese media, the level Indian media to brainwash simple minded Indians is just unparallel, India, a sports giant beating the top Olympic gold medal ranking countries hands down.

One border clash has resulted in you searching for BMI of Indians @beijingwalker ??? What else are you searching? Has your obsession with India overtaken that of your iron friend's (who measures size of d***)?
You are FAR FAR away from being a superpower. In fact, you are yet to start that journey.

It doesn't need any search, it's the lastest international news any news reader can easily come across.

Did I ever ridicule the Olympics? Of course the Olympics is among the top 2 global sporting events along with the FIFA world cup. Nor did I ever say India is a sporting giant. I merely pointed out some facts about the world's most popular sports and how India is better than China when one looks at popular sports. If you don't like facts, that's entirely your choice.

Without one fifth of the humanity China, how can anyone say some events are most popular in the world. anyway, we just point out when it comes overall athletic strength, India is among the bottom ones in the world, accept it or not, it's a hard fact.

FIBA Asia Zone is not Asia. Neither Australia nor New Zealand is located in Asia. I'll admit China did poorly in the last FIBA Asian Cup in 2017, but China beat Iran at the 2018 Asian Games. In any case, China is still number 2 in Asia even if you go by the FIBA ranking.

India is at the top of field hockey globally only if by 'the top' you mean the 4th in the FIH ranking. Care to tell me what is the medal below Bronze called? Air? Is that the reason why India men's field hockey team had nothing to show for in Olympics since 1980 (which was boycotted by the big players)? That India's medals were all made of air?

The top Indian male tennis player is ranked 133 and the top male Chinese player is ranked 163. I guess the difference between 133 and 163 is your standard for separating 'one of the best in Asia' from a 'laggard'.

Oh, wait! China has 5 women tennis players in top 100, three of them in Top 50. India has zero woman in top 100. But I guess women don't count for you. I don't want to make the racist inference that you didn't care about women players because you were Indian, so please kindly tell me why you were overlooking women's tennis.

Last, I don't know why you're so obsessed with Top 5 when every list on the most popular sports is a top 10 list. So you made a conscious decision to cut the list by half just to feel good about your country. Cheery picking is never a good intellectual habit.

Here we are talking about a nation's overall athletic strength, nothing is more authoritative in gauging this than the Olympic Games. India is at the bottom with some tiny countries, every Chinese city team can beat team India hands down.

Based on viewership.

Yawn - Indian players have won a bunch of ATP tournaments. I think Vijay Amritraj alone must have won more than all of the Chinese put together. In fact I doubt any Chinese player has ever won an ATP tournament.

Lol - had to look this up. Didn't even know India had a basketball team. But apparently India has better head to head record against China even in basketball - a sport in which you falsely claim to be the best in Asia.

Of course women count and I specifically mentioned Li Na in one of my posts above. Maybe you didn't pay attention to it because you think women don't deserve any attention.

As I said you can keep clutching at straws.
Nothing is more convincing than a country's overall performance in the Olympic Games, India sits comfortably at the bottom of all nations.
Maybe that's a Communist narrative that is considered gospel in one party States. In democracies, this is not the norm.

Communist narrative? Would you like to take a poll in any forums to see which sports event is the best measurement of a country's overall athletic strength? we can bet it's the Olympics, Only strange Indian minds think other wise and believe it's a communist narrative.

Its a difference in Cultures may be your top-5 world sport not popular in China, Here in USA no one watches Cricket or football unless you're either from Subcontinent or from EU
