Body mass index of Indian 19-year-olds among lowest in 200 countries

Beijing is about the average due to immigration from all over China. People from Northeast China and Shangdong province are the tallest.
Real question is why cant 1.4 billion people win a single gold medal? Is it because of low iq? Poor nutrition? Short life spans so no time to train? Poor genetics making them weak small and frail? Or is it a combination of all?

Lol. Indians do better in actual popular sports than the Chinese. Like Cricket, Tennis, Hockey, Golf. Wonder why China sucks at ALL popular sports and wins medals at nonsense like Trampoline jumping.

Chinese dont do well in any team sports - not sure why.

So there is an entire thread of how the average BMI of Indians is in the normal range?
You have to really insecure to start such a thread then.

Chest-thumping aside, it is concerning if this is the average BMI not because of this figure in and of itself, but because of how many people (statistically speaking) tend to fall below such measured averages within a sample-size.

This talk about "genetic inferiority" however is just plain ludicrous.

Literally nobody in the 3rd world says "mum I want to be an Olympian". Beyond that, the government in and of itself doesn't really care to facilitate such desires. Nor are most people even capable of signing up for such tournaments due to more pressing economic needs that need fulfilling.

What do you mean actual sports? most Chinese gold medals are from weight lifting and swimming, they are not actually sports? what is cricket? an insect? Playing with some insects is a world popular sport?
China won gold medals in almost all sports categories, summer and winter Olympics, Chinese do all sports, not just one or two.

They are not popular spectator sports. Maybe the Communist Party has blocked access to what Cricket is - so I don't blame you for not knowing. Never seen a single Chinese player on the ATP tour. They are terrible at hockey.

We hosted the Olympics in 2008 and topped the gold medal rankings, we are good at all sports and that's why we are always on the top nations when it comes to overall rankings, comparing India with China in sports can only bring great humiliation to your India, your sports level is no better than Chinese Hong kong, every Chinese city can beat your country hands down in the Olympics.

Of course it does. Indians don't grow up wanting to jump up and down on a trampoline to win an Olympic medal. They grow up wanting to be a Tendulkar, Kohli, Amritraj or Krishnan.

Look at top 5 global sports in the world - Football, Cricket, Basketball, Tennis and Hockey. India is good at 3 of these. China is terrible in all 5. But of course they can win medals jumping on a trampoline or swimming or weightlifting.

China didn't win many medals in trampoline, it's not a popular sport in China, China can top the overall gold medal list means China reaped gold in all events, not just one or two.
The Olympic Games are the ultimate judgement of a country's overall athletic strength, every Chinese city can beat Indian nation hands down if participating as an independent team. don't try so hard to humiliate yourself and your country.

Western joke :

what do you call a tall Indian ?

Not really. Maybe that's the narrative peddled in a Communist nation because it is terrible in the world's most competitive and popular sports. Even if one takes niche popular sports with a global presence like F1 or Billiards or Chess - China doesn't have a Kartikeyan/Chandok or a Geet Sethi or a Vishwanathan Anand. It's sad really - a country with 1.5 billion people and has to console itself with medals in sports 99% of human race is uninterested in.

China completely dominates table tennis and does very well in weightlifting, badminton and to a less degree swimming. We also dominate basketball in Asia. These are all popular sports/activities that ordinary people actually participate. I have never been to a college residence hall without table tennis facility. Badminton is far easier to play without a dedicated field than tennis, and most Chinese family I know have a set of badminton gear. Most gyms have free weights and swimming pools. Basketball courts are common in urban areas. These are what I call people's sports. National successes in them inspire people to be more active. I don't know what national success in F1 inspires people to do, overspeeding?
