Black 13-year-old shot dead by Ohio police after $10 theft

Maybe it did not backfire. Maybe it was intended says the cynic in me. Essentially all the rubbish was sucked in to one locale which meant rest of region was free from crime. Similar to how when you vacuam your room all the rubbish collects in the bag but rest of room is mighty clean.

Frankly what you describe was done in UK as well and funny enough about the same time. Post war to about 1970. Huge estates were built. although they havew reputation for crime and drugs but there is no real gun crime but then again gun crime is rare by US standards..

Well it may very well have been intentional. I won't rule that out because in the beginning there wasn't really a heavy police presence in these areas. In fact it was the complete opposite of what it is today. People would call the police and they would be lucky if anybody showed up. Civic leaders said nobody cared. People would be robbed/killed on the street and nobody would bother to investigate. They demanded justice.

Well now they complain there's too much justice. With a heavy police presence crimes got solved and the incarceration rate suddenly shot sky high. The prisons are filled with people from these areas. Now some kid's dad/uncle/brother is serving time. More bad news for the family structure. Liberals throw more free money handouts at them. Doesn't really help when somebody thinks they deserve to drive a BMW instead of a VW and no amount of free money will achieve that,

I think US really needs to go all out to make the country "gun free zone". It really does not behove the leader of the Western world to have this gun culture. Really does not. Whilst I undestand why Blacks are upset but the problem is if I was police officer on patrol and I ran into some huge guys I would want to go home that evening and my gun would be pulled out ready to fire in case they shoot me. It all boils down to guns. While you can't change cultures but you can go after guns.

Well that won't be easy.

In a killing with unavoidable echoes of the Tamir Rice case out of Cleveland, a Columbus officer responding to a report of a $10 armed robbery shot a 13-year-old boy Wednesday night after the youngster pulled a BB gun from his waistband that looked “practically identical” to the weapon police use, authorities say.

On the morning after Tyre King’s death, Mayor Andrew Ginther appeared to choke up as he called for the community to come together and questioned why an eighth-grader would have a replica of a police firearm.

“There is something wrong in this country, and it is bringing its epidemic to our city streets,” Ginther said Thursday.

“And a 13-year-old is dead in the city of Columbus because of our obsession with guns and violence.”

While the case is still under investigation, police and city authorities rejected comparisons to the 2014 killing of 12-year-old Tamir in Cleveland.

“The only thing similar in nature is the age, race and outcome,” police spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner said. “The facts are not similar, and that must be reiterated.”

Dozens of people attended a Thursday evening vigil near the scene of the shooting. Some carried signs calling for justice for Tyre.

Among those participating were several members of Tyre’s youth football team. Their coach described the first-year player as someone with a “smile that could light up the room”.

Officers investigating the robbery report east of downtown Columbus spotted three males who matched the description of the suspects, authorities said. Two of the males ran away when officers tried to speak with them.

The police chased the pair into an alley and tried to take them into custody. Tyre pulled out a gun with a laser sight, and an officer fired, hitting the boy repeatedly, police said.

Tyre died at a hospital. The officer was identified as Bryan Mason, a nine-year veteran of the force. Police records show that in 2012 he shot and killed a man who was holding another person at gunpoint.

The Columbus Dispatch said investigators cleared him. Mason has been placed on leave while Tyre’s shooting is investigated, in keeping with department policy. A call to the head of the police union representing him was not immediately returned.

In a 911 call Wednesday, the robbery victim calmly indicated he didn’t want to make a big deal over $10.

He also said he thought the weapon looked like a particular type of Ruger semi-automatic pistol.

Sirens were heard moments later as police searched for the suspects. Then an unidentified witness told a dispatcher: “He’s shooting him! Oh, my God!”

At a news conference, Police Chief Kim Jacobs displayed a photo of a BB gun like the one Tyre had.

“Our officers carry a gun that looks practically identical to this weapon,” she said. “As you can see, it looks like a firearm that could kill you.”

An attorney for Tyre’s family, Sean Walton, called for an independent investigation. He also said he was aware of witnesses who didn’t agree with the police version of events.

Walton would not discuss any previous dealings Tyre had with police but said the boy had no violent criminal history. He said the family believes Tyre’s involvement in an armed robbery would be “out of character”.

Tyre played several sports, including football, and was in the young scholars programme at school, Walton said.

He had a slight build and, if anything, was on the small side for his age, the attorney said.

Authorities said it was unclear if the shooting was caught on surveillance or cellphone video. Columbus police don’t use body cameras. The 19-year-old male who had been with Tyre was questioned and released pending further investigation, police said.

In Tamir’s case, a 911 caller reported someone pointing a gun at people near a recreation centre.

A rookie officer shot the boy almost immediately after pulling up in his cruiser. The officer and his partner were cleared of wrongdoing. The 911 caller had said the person with the gun was probably a juvenile and the weapon was probably fake, but that information was never passed on to the officers.

A grand jury concluded they reasonably believed it was a real gun and their lives were in danger, prosecutors said.

Prosecutor Tim McGinty said Tamir ─ who was big for his age ─ was pulling the pistol from his waistband when he was shot.

He said the boy was trying to either hand it over or show police it wasn’t real, but the officers had no way of knowing that.

of course people only care about t white on black killing, but you don't hear a peep about the mass killing of blacks going on daily by other blacks

3 thugs shoot up a party injuring 8 including a 3 year old, if they all died do you think anyone would care?? even the black community??

this such a farce. the police should just let black communities police themselves, and see how well that works out. we'll never get along.

Black people need to look within their community and have some serious reforms.

You'd think Obama would speak up and make it a priority but he is more interested in chastising the police.

No American president will because NAACP and the black community will label them as "racist". Their community is more interested in feel-goods and blaming others instead of introspection. I don't know if you watched the video of Mike Brown incident or any other videos of police shooting against those thugs but it is clear that the police did the right thing. These people resist authority, they charge at police, they basically do everything you're not supposed to do. When the police respond to their actions, their community riots and destroys property in their own community. Honestly, the black community needs some serious reforms.

Well speaking of rioting and looting. In additition to one of my previous posts about being stuck in a dangerous inner city poor environment..."credible" store chains end up moving out due to pilfering/robberies. That leaves them with unscrupulous store owners who jack up the prices which makes life even harder. When riot/looting happens more businesses pack up and leave. What happens next is those same local leaders screaming about the forgotten people who don't have access to anything...which they say is caused by racism and priviledge.

Let's burn down a city for this martyr

And those thugs came back during the riot to finish the job

They always cry about slavery and racism but none of that was unique to them. Everyone from Italians, Germans, Irish to Indian, and Asians face racism in America. Irish were brought over as slaves too. Yet no other community has failed as much as theirs.

How dare you insinuate he was a thug! Pictures lie! He was a little 100lb kid just shot at random. He was about to enter college! A bright light in the community extinguished!

This is GENOCIDE to African American people!!

The police should ask before shoot.

For example :

Police
( pointing his gun at the kid )
Hey, kid! Is that gun for real?

Kid
( holding his gun )
Nah, This is BB gun..

None of the accident will happen if the police ask first..

Ever had a gun in your face? Your looking down a barrel you don't really have time to hold a polite conversation.

You aim a gun at a person with one purpose, you pull a gun on a Cop (real or replica) you will be shot. It is not the Police role to be a bullet sponge just to prove the criminals intent before they fire.

And he got what he was asking for, clearly.

I am sure there is a whole socioeconomic background leading up to the armed robbery at 13, which may not be all the kid's fault, but he paid the price for his criminal actions.

13 year old deserved to die. Yep understood loud and clear.

Does a tazer stop a bullet if a gun is pointed at you?

That doesn't make any sense, no gun is going to stop a bullet if its all ready been fired, we are talking about using a taser to disarm a 13 year old. A Police officer's training should be that he can disarm a damn kid without killing him.

UK police makes American Police look like a corrupt police force from some third world country, the level of professional and training is far superior to American Police.
