BD’s per capita income to reach $16,000 by 2041: Azad

Principal Coordinator (SDG Affairs) of the Prime Minister's Office Abul Kalam Azad on Thursday said Bangladesh's per capita income will reach US$16,000 by 2041 when the country will be a developed one.

He came up with the remarks while addressing a roundtable on "Potential Roles and Challenges of Private Sector to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals" organised by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI).

Azad said the government has created a land bank of 100,000 acres for establishing economic zones across the country, especially in the south belt where 35,000 acres of land have been acquired and handed over to Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (Beza).

He said the government has done a mapping with the goals and targets of SDGs and assigned all the ministries with their respective tasks for their implementation, according to a press release.

"We need resources mobilisation for financing issues and to enhance skill development," Azad said, reports UNB.

He urged the private sector to invest in the economic zones, saying the government will facilitate their investment providing electricity and gas supply.

DCCI President Abul Kasem Khan in his welcome address said the private sector is facing some challenges. "We need policy continuation, consistency and cohesiveness for more engagement of private sector in attaining SDGs."

President of Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) Barrister Nihad Kabir and President of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) Mahbubul Alam were also present at the programme.

All are bloody election time talk. I ask the govt to at least fix the roads and transportation system, and waterlogging in Dhaka by 2041 instead of big talking about GDP. If we believe in what this govt says, then we must also believe BD has already built bullet trains and is in the process of building jet planes.

One of the best decision by this govt.As far as I detest this govt.s for it's autocratic tendency, heavy handed approach to the opposition, assault on free speech and too accommodating approach to India, but I must admit, they have done really some good things which will help our economy in a long run, no one can deny the tremendous improvement in electricity sector in recent years and the govt. decision to import LNG, building up 100 EEZ and creating land bank of 100k acres, setting up IT and Electronics villages, positive policy making regarding Leather, Pharmaceuticals, motor cycle, RMGs etc. Their decision of constructing subway and not allowing any farther overland metrorail in Dhaka city is also a wise decision. This govt. is also has a vision to build a strong armed forces step by step unlike BNP. I hope if BNP comes power in the next election, it will continue these good policy.(I am not much optimistic whether BNP will do that, they have records to not adding a single MW electricity in their most recent 5 years term and they decommissioned our most capable Frigate and only 4th generation fighter jet, just because it was purchased by AL BNP can't do any good thing but have 100 percent jealousy to destroy the good deed of their opposing party.)

Fine, this is election time talk. Can you tell us what is your thought, what will be Bangladesh's per capita income by 2041? If not 16000 usd, 12000 usd? Lets say 10000 usd? Or you do not even believe that? the roads and transportation system, and water logging have nothing to do with per capita income just for your info. But transportation system will be in much better shape by 2030.

Think most people commenting here have little understanding of economics.

What we need to be focused on is GDP per capita PPP as exchange rates fluctuate. BD nominal and PPP gap will have narrowed by 2041.

BD should be over 5000 US dollars by 2020 and could easily quadruple this to 20,000 by 2040. This is in today's money
and not 2041.

AL are doing great things as regards the economy and this is no idle boast.

And besides , what will be inflation that time?
If we will be able to buy the same thing we are buying with 84 tk then we will think that income really increased that much.

So what's the point if income increased in Bangladesh tk of this ( 2018) times? now gdp ppp is around 4500$ and if it increase 10 time so beef price will increase 10 time ( comparing with 20 years ago price ( govt pay scale increased 5 time ( from 4300 to 22000 for 9th grade ,and beef price increased 10 time though), what was the Gold price before 20 years?
So sir may I ask, what is the benefit, if you can't control inflation? If I still can't buy more goods with my salary /income so what type of development it is? I am a poor man, and I only understand such economics and nothing else.

12000 may be in 2041 dollar, but it would require many things to approach 12000 in 2018 dollar value.12000 dollar in 2018 is almost near the thresh hold set by world bank for high income country.
