Among the countries mentioned, we have the lowest GDP PPP here so no surprise...

Although It's surprising to see Thailand ahead of China and Indonesia behind India....maybe India's strong automobile industry is responsible.

They should've included Nepal, Afghanistan and Myanmar as well. Not good putting us that below.
thailand has excellent road network.. but may be car is expensive due to duty...
I dont think Indian roads can cope with increase in cars, if we reach 10 percent, our cities will be permanently gridlocked.. :)

Condition of Bangladeshi is roads not good either. Traffic jam is hellish.....similar thought crossed my mind, if this is what happens at 2% then what will happen then the portion goes significantly higher.. Scary

is Indian car of same make more expensive than japanse second hand? if thats the case then it makes sense to buy second hand car...
used car market is still not mature in India.. people dont trust second hand car plus there is some stigma attached to buying second hand car.. people will rather buy new smaller car than bigger car second hand, for same price.. ... guess no such stigma in bd.

Bangladesh's position in terms of owning motorised vehicles by households is one of the lowest in the world, according to a survey.

Only 2.0 per cent of the country's households own cars, motorcycles or bikes, revealed a survey, conducted in 44 countries in 2016 by the Washington-based Pew Research Centre.

The survey found that more people had bikes than cars. The average for car ownership was one-third while for bike ownership, it was around 42 per cent.

The survey report said: "In South and Southeast Asian countries, the proportion of car owners was incredibly low. In Bangladesh, for example, only 2.0 per cent reported having a car."

However, Vietnam's position in ownership of car is similar to Bangladesh.

Among the Asia and the Pacific region, South Korea topped the position having 83 per cent ownership in cars, followed by Malaysia with 82 per cent and Japan 81 per cent. In South Asia, 6.0 per cent of Indian households own a car as compared to 3.0 per cent in Pakistan.

Italy tops in the global ranking having 89 per cent of its households owning a car. America trailed closely behind with 88 per cent.

In general, developed countries showed a high rate of car ownership. In Europe, for example, the average national share of car owners was 79 per cent.

Germany topped the list of bike-owning countries, with 80 per cent of respondents owning bikes-way more than the United States, where only 53 per cent owned bikes.

In emerging markets like Vietnam, Chile, China and Indonesia, around two-thirds of the population owned bikes.

But within these emerging economies, bike-ownership was not positively associated with income-the way it was in developed countries.

This might be because owning a bicycle in the US is more about biking as a hobby or recreational activity than in other emerging economies, where it is more often a means of transport, said the report.

Of the three means of transport, motorcycles were the least common.

The survey found a high concentration of them in South and Southeast Asia, probably because those were not very expensive in these places.

Some eight in 10 people in Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia reported owning one.

In my world all citizen's will use BRT system and Bicycles only. and each city, town, village will have these systems or any other "equivalent" system. No private vehicles.

Trust me, this is a blessing for Bd. The density of towns and easy availability of CNG/cab/rickshaw means cars are not a necessity day to day.

It is irrelevant how much car ownership is in other countries, we should aspire to things that matter to us - like child mortality and quality of life - which is better than most in the region.

Yes, the majority of private cars are used cars from Japan. The maximum limit of age of import cars is around 5 years. However, quality of these used cars in BD is much higher than the made-in-India new cars built with Murir Tin.
Made in India cars are exported to Japan, europe and whole world by Hyundai , Suzuki, mahindra, VW, Tayota and others.
Second Hand is second hand (In delhi if some one buys 2nd hand car we suppose him a cheap person)

Also BD seriously lacks infrastructure (roads) to drive the junk of Japan, unpaved roads are good for bullocks and cycles for labours working in Textile mills.

Plus it help us to maintain a positive trade balance by limiting oil import.Bangladesh imported only 1.5 billion dollar worth of oil in the last year while India imported 64 billion dollar worth of oil.So average Indian spent five times more money on oil import than average Bangladeshi with around same per capita income.It's like 'Goriber Ghora roog'
But in end we are living far better or comfort life, here people in delhi value time more then petrol and use car (petrol) even to buy Vegetables or cigarette from corner shop including me:P

Yes cause you are a Bangladeshi, you d rather buy a second hand JDM Toyota with 30,000 Km on the odometer with your money than an brand new Indian made VW, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Chevrolet, Renault or Hyundai :lol:

Who knows that odometer reading was correct, it is general practice to reset meter before resale.
Thse second hand are also have large no. of accidental cars which got disposed in srilanka and bangladesh

Because i know i can add another 200,000 in my odometer in a japanese 2nd hand whereas i will be able to barely pass 100,000 in a indian first hand car.
you really need to change your mindset my hyundai sentro just crossed 2 lac Km and Nissan Sunny have not encountered 1 single issue in 4 years since purchased and clocked 30000 Km. Now think how much faults you encountered with your 2nd or who knows 3rd 4th ... hand car weekly

Second hand JDM Toyota is far more solid given its build quality than brand new Indian-assembled VW, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Chevy, Renault and Hyundai.

For the same reason the build quality of those vehicles deteriorated badly when those automakers decided to assemble the cars in Mexico. German-assembled VW is far more solid than Mexico-assembled VW that North America gets lacking build quality as product.

And we all know India's build quality is quite poor, hence cheaper and Next Mexico in line.

He is putting his smart money into good use. :D

car ownership in Indonesia is mostly on corporates/companies tabs instead of individual ownership, this research is done on private household percentage not on the whole Car or motorcycle sales.

Be careful bangladshi will counter by saying car ownership is mostly on Hilsa tab. Actually beedeestan has 97% car ownership

Don't make yourself a joke.
No one from BD is claiming possession of 97% carownership in BD.
We know where we are...Only 2%.
But your big talk elusion suggest you are at merely 6%.
What is your annual car building capacity? 30 millions? 50millions ?(23.96 millions in FY 15-16).
You have to build another 600 millions brand new car ( that require another 25 years at current rate) to even match at Thailand level(around 50 % ownership).
So, it is better to build a brand new toilet of your own.
