Bangladesh to get US naval ship as gift

A ton of steel scraps cost about $200, a ton of smelted steel may cost $600 and a ton of fabricated steel may not cost more than $4000. So, a 3250 ton of fabricated steel ship hull may not cost 3250 x $4000 = $13million. So, a price of $10m is perfect. hen, of course, the engine prices shoukd be added. So, we can assume that USA has gifted us the engines for free.

However, the ship is not that free because BN may have to spend another $50 million or more to refurbish the ship with new weapons.

When you add the cost of fitting sensors and weapons you may be looking at then 50 million dollars approximately.

This ship will then have capabilities similar to the F-22P that Pakistan acquired from China for 175 million dollars per ship.

Not a bad deal even if the ship has only 10 years service life for a cash strapped BD.

and look at that hot operational range :smitten: and it should have atleast 15-20 more years left to it

We are paying for GIFT! USA will take 10 million dollar and call it as a gift?

That's why everyone loves us :)

Seriously, the ship is free but a condition to accepting the ship is that BD will have to pay for its refit which if you go by what the Philippines have spent would be north of $10 mil. The 10 mil will get you refit of engines, baseline navigation (commercial off the shelf), no CIWS, no radar etc. You may get the fire control for the main gun (just like the Philippines) or you may not get the fire control (like Nigeria) depends on your negotiation and willingness to pay insofar as the fire control is concerned. CIWS, radars are simply not in the package nor are negotiable. The Pinoy Defense minister begged Panneta for the CIWS and still we said no.

your statement means this Cutter will be fitted with the same or similar weapons that F-22P of PN have been fitted with. Everybody says F-22P is a great boat. So, please check and compare the weapons systems in both the ships and if your assumption is true, then we have reason to celebrate.

My own knowledge about weapons is not worthy to make a comparison. So, someone else including you can give us comparison tables for these two boats. Whatever it may be, the news (the thread starter) clearly states that it will be the largest ship by weight with our BN. So, it is certain that the weapons will be those of a frigate. But, the question is will it be at par with F-22P.

Pretty much the same. Our operational range is 4times higher than f22p as well. And ours can also carry 8 more personnel. We got a good deal, that is for sure :) plus i like the look of the ship

Type 730B CIWS (2× 30 mm 7-barrel gatling guns)

Missiles:

1× 8-cell FM-90N SAM launcher
2× 4-cell C-802 SSM launchers

Other:

2× 3-cell ET-52C torpedo launchers
2× 6-cell RDC-32 anti-submarine rockets

Aircraft carried: 1× Harbin Z-9EC ASW helicopter

BNS OSMANI (USCGC Jarvis):

armed with 1 AK–176M main gun, 2x Type 730B CIWS,, 1×8 FM-90N SAM launcher, 2×4 C-803 SSM launchers, 2× 3 torpedo launchers, 2×6 asw anti-submarine rockets & ASW helicopter on board

# now you compare...

BTW upcoming 2Type 053H2 Jianghu-III Class frigates suppose to be have same armaments.

It ain't free. You get a 40 year old hull and you pay us to make it "seaworthy" again. That will probably cost you north of $10 million dollars. The same thing with the Philippines, they got 2 cutters and they paid for the refit, also same with the PNS Alamgir.

It would be kina funny if Bangladesh scraps it for metal instead.

Now, I think, BNS Osmani is superior to F-22P in the following points'

1) As @animelive has pointed out, BNS Osmani operation range is four times that of F22P. Osmani has a range of 16,000 miles. It means it can take assignment in the deep blue water Seas far away from our shore. Can we say this boat adds another dimension to the BN, the 4th dimension capability, a far away assignment?

2) Your comparison table shows F22P is fitted with C-802 missiles, whereas Osmani will be with C-803s. It is also a great advancement.

So, we can say this boat is moderately superior than the F22P. It is a great achievement, indeed!!

not sure about the c-803 SSM as there are no reports of us purchasing any of those but yes it is way superior to 802 for sure.

The cutter's structural will prevent the installation of many of these systems. There is simply no room below deck or on deck for the support structures of these systems.

can change structure on deck.

This photo shows how beautiful this boat is. By the way, I understand very much the word "Beam" when it is engineering. But, what is the concept of Beam in a ship and what is its relationship with the length of a ship? Can it be that the Length means the length at water level, and Beam Length means the extension at both sides of the deck when rising from the water level? So, according to my assumption the Length of BNS Osmani at water level is 115m and that at the deck level is (115 + 13) or 128 m. Can any one answer correctly?

I like this idea better. We take the ship as gift(free) then haul it to Khulna shipyard take it part by part and make other boats from the parts.USA can shove the 10 ml $ where it belong.

If the ship is sea worthy, instead of paying $10 million (if this option is available), we should refit it ourselves if we can, if not then do it in South Korea or China. That will be cheaper as the refit of armaments and required structural reinforcements can be done all at one shot.
