Bangladesh : The Asian Tiger Myth vs Reality

well, none of us are claiming to be number one in everything...

but things like economy growing rate
lifespan and infant mortality
education and literacy rates etc
we are doing on par or better than the regional countries... which we do celebrate... but some of us here can't take it like a mature person

the asian tiger label didn't come from us... infact if i remember correctly... china/ singapore/ southkorea etc prides themselves as asia's tiger and the potential for bangladesh to become the next is a high one and is forcasted by international community... these are not claimed by us.

I don't know much about economics etc. so I can't comment too much.

But I do remember reading about this several years ago.

https://www.goldmansachs.com/insights/archive/archive-pdfs/brics-book/brics-chap-13.pdf

https://apiar.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/6_ICAR_Bahrain_BRR786_Bus_V1-53-62.pdf

Of course Next-Eleven is well known to posters here.

The point is note the source of the concept.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_O'Neill,_Baron_O'Neill_of_Gatley

So no need to get ones panties in a bunch when someone is posting an article highlighting some achievement by Bangladesh in regards to her economy.

Too many people have had their egos crushed with the way BD is doing.

BD has a long way to go but it currently pretty much seems to be doing everything right as far as economy is concerned.
yes, i don't agree with most of the govt. actions but i've to give props to them when they're able to guarrantee 24/7 365 days a year electricity to everyone constantly...
plus... ones the fiber optic connection is in place... internet connection will jump significantly... steps are being taken to adopt 5g now and 4g lte is all over the country... ukraine only started 4g about a year or two ago

Also other things like the way they are taking loans to finance infrastructure at the best rates possible so as not to overburden the future generations, building SEZs, setting up training institutes etc. There seems to be a well thought out plan that is being implemented in BD phase by phase.

My only real gripe with them is that they stop the thuggery and allow dissenting views.

BD was created to be permanently subjugated, and that too with a voluntary participation from her folks who have a seriously curtailed mental capacity. She is the perfect Chanakya neighbor....
says the guy whose country is treated like dirt of europe

Which is?
shia sunni
and the various subgroups within the two

yeah, today the FM i believe said in a press breifing that bangladesh will never again ask china for loans and chinese loans will not be accepted for OBOR initiative... he said the country has attained capacity to finance projects with it's own money. tbh it was surprising to hear what he was saying about the loans... basically the govt. aware of Sri lanka etc and is not willing to go down the same path

Whats with this apparent push back in regards to China?

Things were different just 3 years ago no?

The reality is Bengali society and values are healthy ones.

Or at least have been up till this point in time.

In all liklihood, Bangladesh will do well in the future inshAllah.

But comparing so and so with so and so is pointless.

I noticed lately there have a been quite a few of these comparing threads opened in BD section which I think serves no purpose other than starting mudslinging encounters.

You will certainly love to watch this video clip. Do not please lose your sleep. It may cause accidents when you drive a car day time. Do not worry about Chanakya neighbor because we already have successfully gotten rid of our tormentors in the west of India. Within the next twenty years, our GDP will grow to $1,000 billion. How about the Pakistani GDP at that time?

I would like to quote few international rankings Bangladesh is placed in the recent times. You can decide your self if Bangladesh has beaten Pakistan and India as most members from BD keep claiming here.

1) Bangladesh is the least innovative country in Asia.
(Global innovation index 2018)

2) The worst roads in Asia are in Bangladesh, Out of the 114 countries , Bangladesh stands at 113 . Just better than Nepal.
( World economic forum 2017 Data leads)

3) Dhaka is second worst city of the world as a capital of a any country.
(Global liveability index 2018 , EIU)

4) Dhaka as the capital of the country is 3rd most air-polluted in the world.

( World Bank's Doing Business report, 2018)

Actually I do not mind where Bangladesh is right now. Bangladesh is all set to rise at a rapid rate. BD has taken numerous steps to fro the improvement. Even If BD is not asian tiger, it will become in a short period of time. BD has chosen right path and BD deserves complement for it.

context please! are you talking about in regards to international community - china and it's demoition of religious sites?

edit: oh about the loans? well lets say they have been trying to influence our politics, unfavorable offers, like the deep sea port fiasco, the frigate deal (which they corrected) but the main thing is their loans, which traps developing nations into submission and most nations like sri lanka is giving up rights to control stuff in their country...
the deep sea port in sri lanka will be under chinese infleunce for 99 years
as well as the financial hub of srilanka... china owns a lot of towers there now

Half the population in Pakistan does not participate in economic activities, which is not the case in Bangladesh.

Your knowledge about Pakistan is not even rudimentary...

Women outnumbering men as general practitioners

The PMDC's statistics show that of the 36,543 Pakistanis, who got registration certificates for their MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) degrees between 2016 and 2018 to begin practice, 21,445 were women and 15,098 men, both local and foreign graduates.

Pakistan - Trained teachers in primary education, female (68.13% female teachers)

Trained teachers in primary education, female (% of female teachers) in Pakistan was reported at 68.13 % in 2016, according to the World Bank collection of development indicators, compiled from officially recognized sources.

BASR data shows that KU has conferred 673 MPhil degrees between 2013 and 2018 in different disciplines, including Natural Science, Social Science, Education, Law and Management Science. Of these research fellows, 410 (61 per cent) are women. Similarly, 594 (57 per cent) of the 1,036 PhD degrees were conferred on women.

And Punjab university is the biggest univ. in Pakistan(now the female percentage is higher as this is slightly old report)

Gender ratio: More girls than boys admitted at the Punjab University this year

Once again this is pseudo-logic with a side of eliteness . There is no nation wide participation of women in the work force. What you are providing are isolated instances.

Consider the following,

Over the last decade, Bangladesh has made notable progress in expanding access to education. In a country of over 18 million primary school students, Bangladesh has achieved near universal net primary enrollment, with over 97.9% of children of primary school age enrolling in school. Bangladesh has also achieved gender parity in access to education, and 50.9% of all enrolled students were girls in 2016.

https://www.usaid.gov/bangladesh/education

I am quoting the following from Page 25 of the link posted just below it,

Overall rate of female teachers has increased over the period from 2010 to 2015. In 2010, the female participation was 49.22 percent and it rose up to 60.00 percent in 2015. On the other hand, the percent of male was 50.78 in 2010 and it got down to 40.00 in 2015.

http://bbs.portal.gov.bd/sites/defa...89a5/BDcountry project_final draft_010317.pdf

Female primary school teachers outnumber male teachers all over the world.
When you have women participating in all the fields of economy , the economy will grow.

In BD standard, you need a female PM to be sent to work as a part-time cook* in the Indian Presidential Palace in Delhi, the rape capital of the world!!! And, that's the women emancipation...

*Hasina cooked for the Indian President Pranab Mukerjee while in an official visit to India

Sorry, you said these..... OK, I admit I don't know. Forgive me. After all, most Chinese do not know Bangladesh.
But I know what you mean... Bangladesh let China compromise.
emmm, in short, applause for you.

Overall Female labor force participation for females in Pakistan is 26.066% and for BD it is 34.755%...not a huge difference looking into in the context of big numbers of women in RMG industry in B'desh...
