Bangladesh rally attracts tens of thousands to demand new elections - BBC News

Thanks for the in depth opinion.

I have only one objection, the idea that Indonesia is doing much better after Soeharto does not give enough credit to Soeharto for giving Indonesia sustained growth and infra for decades - which set the stage for a today's democracy.

Soehartos regime took Indonesia from the poverty line to industrialisation. So it's unfair today to say life is better without him.

Actually your comparison with India is perfect - they went the democratic route while you had Soeharto - and just look at the difference.

Regarding Bangladesh, they are following a similar path. Similar growth, similar development, similar accusations - but AL did not kill hundreds of thousands like Soeharto. I think most Asian countries would choose peaceful autocratic rule for a period of it means peace and development.

Hasina is 75 years old, there will be an inevitable move into democracy - but I think BD should be allowed the benefit that Indonesia had for a few more years.

Your welcome

Any way my writing doesnt suggest that I say Indonesia is better without him.

Soeharto comes up to power is very much applauded by Indonesians, particularly his effort to eliminate Communist power, bringing peace to region, and put economy as the first focus. His administration helps the nation bring down inflation from around thousand percent into single digit in the period of around 5-6 years.

Any way he replaced Soekarno that for the last 6 years of his rule is regarded as Authoritarian Ruler.

------------------------------------------------------

Any way my point is that the time where BD needs to implement Democracy has come. No need to wait too long for that to happen.

Soeharto, unlike Nawaz Sharif or Sudanese previous leader, live peacefully in his house in Cendana Central Jakarta until his death. We never see him as criminal or short of that. Indonesians decision to bring down his rule in 1997-1998 is because we think that it is the time Indonesia moves from Authoritarian regime into democracy as our people and civil society are already capable to live in Democratic system

Our President when Soeharto passed away was Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. He was present during the funeral, as well all Indonesian leaders, including opposition leaders during that time like Amien Rais. They are all making Jenazah prayer for Soeharto

This is very inspiring. Although there is controversy in the short term - I believe in 50 years Hasina will be looked back as BDs Mahatir or Soeharto and will get this same respect.

I don't agree that BD is ready for democracy yet. If you just look at the opposition - it's all the same people who wrecked BD 15 years ago.

They had 2 terms and achieved zero development. Scandal after scandal, violence and terrorism at all time high - only finally pushed out by military intervention. .

The fact that some are rallying for a proven terrorist, extremely corrupt and most hated person in BD of the time, Tarek Zia is why BD is not ready for democracy.

People here vote based on intimidation, loyalty and bribery - that will never bring a fair outcome.

Indonesian leaders (and overall political culture) is so much more decent than ours in the subcontinent (especially Bangladesh).

We in Bangladesh have to go a long, long way to learn decency.

First learn decency.

Then you will be ready for democracy.

Dr. Md. Yunus was a stooge of the USA. His agreeing and disagreeing never mattered at all.

It is President Ziaur Rahman who is looked back as the most inspiring figure in Bangladesh.

Hasina Bibi will be hanged for murdering 57 military officers in Pilkhana and forgotten. She was selected by India to look after the interest of India. She was like a daughter of Pranab Mukherji’s residence in India.

President Ershad is also the same. He killed Zia after getting order from Delhi. His character of loving women and wine quite fondly appreciated by Delhi when he was sent to Deradun for training.

Zia will remain the inspirirer to the people of BD. So, do not overdresm of a civilian PM who came to power with the help of Delhi. Hasina will remain an embarrassment to Bangladesh.

Inspiring?? Zia couldn't even "inspire" his own family!

His legacy is a joke today - one son was a criminal drug addict and the other is one of the worst grafters in BD history - you think people have forgotten "Mr CNG".

Zia's gone and what is left is his low iq wife and his corrupt son hiding in the UK. Running BNP candidate selections via WhatsApp.

He's only "inspiring" fools like you 🤣

I can agree about the low IQ of Zia’s Begum and son. But, Zia was different. I do not have to write many things about him here. Historians are there to evaluate him in a neutral way.

But, why do you think Hasina is a great leader who inspires our people? Then why she had to come to the front with Indian assistance in a midnight voterless election?

Please ask her to contest in a fair election to see how her great IQ helps her to win. Her IQ is soooo high that she had to get her BA degree in six years.

All the BAL bootlickers jumping up and down here talking about "legacy" forget that Hasina's legacy is no better.

She is paying tens of millions to her jobless son every month.

And talking about party cohorts and suck ups, that's just unmentionable... they have stolen billions, especially Kaua Quader and some of the others (Tipu Munshi included).

I am no fan of BNP corrupts, but even they had no chance to loot this much.

You spoke about inspirational Zia - now you are shamed because that name is linked to an indefensible family.

Unfortunately for you and your chamcha @Bilal9, Hasina's legacy is pretty much solidified.

With the Padma setu, MRT, nuclear plants she has initiated an era of works that will echo for decades. Even in 100 years, children will have to be told that Hasina built their main infrastructure. Just like we talk about Ershad and his public works.

What can be said of khaleda and tareks 2 terms? Nothing to show whatsoever - and you want to hand them the largest budget in history - a budget built up slowly, steadily by Hasina?

Why do you tie up legacy with democracy as if they are linked. Since when have great legacies needed democracy? Mahatir or Soeharto ring a bell?

And to talk about democracy and BDs opposition - BNP, Jamaat - in the same breath is the biggest joke of all. Those parties literally had to be militarily ousted because of their vote rigging.

Ps. A BA is not proof of intelligence - but watching your child die slowly from drug abuse - while being the most powerful person in the country is definitely proof of dumbness.

Do not please talk like a BAL chamcha. We have been seeing this unelected Party for many years. Now, ask your great Legacy to contest in a free election.

This is the intellectual level of the people claiming power for 'democracy' in BD. No ideas, no national interest - just want power.

Momentum seems to be with opposition. They just have to not screw up with their statements..

The people of BD want fair elections for all time to come so that they can oust a bad govt in the next election.

No more midnight voter-less elections in the country.
