Bangladesh, once a ‘hopeless’ economy, is leaving Pakistan behind

. . . . .
Nice to see a gang of butt-hurts from Pakistan and India trying to prove that BD growth figures are false.:D
Dude, BD is in the process of setting up 100 SEZs to cater for employment. BD has also brought it's population incesase down to 1 per cent.
An economy that is hitting near 7% per capita growth with massive infrastructure going in and by far the lowest debt in S Asia has little to worry about.

Why would Pakistan be hurt if Bangladeshi do well? If we were like Indians we won't be exporting nuclear boilers to your nuclear plant or have done tech transfer with banking facilities in the 80s.
Anyone who has read history and sacrifices of people like founding father Hussain Shaheed Suhrwardy contribution towards building Pakistan would carry any malice or even artificial hate close to the likes of what muktijoddha did in the Bangladesh literature and media in the 1970s with aashirwad of India.
'100 SEZs'!!! Looks like another stupid statement by Sh. Hasina govt.. Does Bangladesh have the land area? Its more like 3 SEZs which I'd heard but all from India and non-reliable. Bangladesh needs to move away from dependence of Garment industry and remittances. What bout It, biotech, pharma, auto sectors, etc...
East Pakistan now Bangladesh had a vibrant Film industry in the 60s. Its technicians had incredible command. There are so many fields Bangladesh can use to improve its economy.

Atleast you understand. Cheers brother. I hope for the best of these three countries because regardless of all the shit that goes down... we’re the same people.

Why would someone (even that being the PM of a country) lie about having a '100 SEZ's' when they do not have it?

There are 66 sites right now. 34 more are in the pipeline. More will be built, increasingly by local and foreign private investors.

A partial (and dated) list is here,

Below is the Korean SEZ near the mouth of the Karnafuli river (one of many planned and being built all over Bangladesh by foreign investors from India as well as China).

This is another SEZ by a private firm 'Powerpac' near Mongla port.

Superb as always @Nilgiri

Nothing talks like data properly interpreted and I marvel at your facility with economic data.

I am very pessimistic about Pakistan at the moment with all the institutional dysfunction spreading like cancer. But your interpretation of Bangladesh's economic figures is a revelation. I did not know BBS was doing such great figure fudging.

If Pakistan gets a handle on the institutional dysfunction, then there is absolutely no doubt that Pakistan would be far ahead of Bangladesh. Otherwise, Bangladesh has an edge due to being characterized as a Least Developed Nation and getting preferential treatment as an exporter of garments.

Indeed my friend. But the good news for BD is that a fair share of their smart people are waking up to the delusion being spread around this long and deep:

https://opinion.bdnews24.com/2017/12/18/where-did-the-benefits-of-economic-growth-disappear/

Basically this author (M A Taslim) took the BBS HIES 2016 (preliminary report) found here:

http://bbs.portal.gov.bd/sites/defa...4cf9b2f1a6e0/HIES Preliminary Report 2016.pdf

and Mr. Taslim applied a common sense inflation deflator (i.e CPI) to get the real income...that BBS conveniently did not do (if you look at the report, absolute raw Taka income no matter the inflation is all that is talked about to compare between 2010 and 2016, which is frankly such a disingenuous thing to do).

Like I have always said, the first part of dealing with a problem is realise you got a problem in the first place (than pretend its not there or wish it goes away by itself somehow etc).

The other good news is that IMF over time will impose more stricter common standards and less leeway for countries to do such shenanigans (at least in such as it arises from developed world liquidity transfers etc) overall:

https://defence.pk/pdf/threads/repo...ality-credibility.525379/page-2#post-10436598

Bangladesh, and every country of the region owe their people (esp the poorest) much better, not continue delusion just to create bubble for as long as possible (till it bursts and again the poorest get most affected by that when that happens)...this is not good:

https://thefinancialexpress.com.bd/health/calorie-intake-falls-fuels-twin-fears-1509854200

Calorie intake by Bangladeshis was falling significantly, faster in urban areas, by official count. It fuels twin fears of adverse impacts on nutrition level and productivity programmes.

Nutritionists and economists said the fall could increase the "malnutrition and productivity vulnerability" among the poor people whose consumption quantum is already below the standard levels.

The per-capita calorie intake dropped by 107.9 kilo-calorie (Kcal) to 2210.4 Kcal a day in 2016 from 2318.3 Kcal six years ago in the country, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) survey shows.

Economists and nutritionists said if the calorie consumption is fallen, the malnutrition among some group of people could go up with the result of higher incidence of poverty in the future days.

Assistant Professor at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science of Dhaka University Md Ruhul Amin said the falling trend in average calorie intake at national level could impact on the nutrition levels of some groups of the population, like mothers, children and poor households.

"Since the overall consumption of calorie has decreased, some of the population groups could become more vulnerable in terms of the nutritious food intake. It means their nutrition level in the body will decline and so will productivity. It will ultimately affect poverty alleviation in the country," he told the FE.

Bangladesh has not been in a state of war for the past 17 years. If BD went through what Pak has been through then today BD would be history. There would be no BD. Whilst Pakistan is fighting a never ending war BD has been steadily increasing its economy.

Pakistan was forced to get involved which initially started in 1979 with Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Millions of Afghans fled to Pakistan with the impact still being felt today. If Afghanistan was a stable nation Pakistan would have witnessed prosperity over the decades. Nonetheless Pakistanis are steadily making things better. Ofcors you wouldn't know that as BD is heavily influenced by Indian media.

U have a wrong perception about BD. Hardly any Bangladeshi hates Pakistan. Hating and condemning the atrocity of Pak Army doesn't equate to hating Pakistan. U won't get it though. In order to understand it, u need to be in Bangladesh and talk with common public. Bangladesh has respect for Pakistan just like it has respect for any other Muslim Country.

Secondly, I will suggest u to open ur eyes first. Bangladesh is most vocal about the Rohingya issue. How many Muslim countries have u seen to support Bangladesh in this regard barring few exceptions like Turkey?

Thirdly, currently almost 1 million Rohingyas r living in Bangladesh as refuges. Pls Don't ignore the reality.
