Bangladesh mulls importing train coaches from ICF​

A team of officials from Bangladesh Railways would soon visit ICF to further the process of export of coaches from ICF.

Chennai: Bangladesh Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan on Thursday visited the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) here and said his country would explore the possibility of importing train coaches from the facility.

Sujan, accompanied by Bangladesh Railways Additional Director General (Operations) Sardar Shahadat Ali, on a brief visit, inspected the special coaches made by ICF, including the Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) Vistadome coaches, LHB AC tier II and III coaches among others.

During his interaction with ICF General Manager A K Agarwal, the Bangladeshi minister said Bangladesh has taken up the project of converting its metre gauge tracks to broad gauge and the LHB coaches from ICF would be of great help in modernising Bangladesh Railways.

He said Bangladesh Railways would explore the possibility of importing train sets for mass commutation such as DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) similar to the ones exported to Sri Lanka and Nepal by ICF recently, a press release said.

A team of officials from Bangladesh Railways would soon visit ICF to further the process of export of coaches from ICF, the release said.

Sujan said the ICF played a vital role in the development of railways in Bangladesh and the ties between the railways of two countries has a ‘long history’.

He recalled the sacrifices of the Indian soldiers in getting freedom for Bangladesh and the neighbouring country would maintain the relationship forever.

The Minister was also impressed by the Vande Bharat coaches and other coaches manufactured by the ICF, the release said.

Why not buy more advanced coahes from Indonesia, China or Korea?

Dear @Black_cats, I was expecting you to call that minister Tipu Munshi who was claiming BD 40% are as rich as Europeans. But, when BD cannot even manufacture train coaches and asking India to extend loans to buy these.

Please note that Europeans have been building train coaches for more than 200 years.

So, how do you guys celebrate that BD has become 40% rich? The simple point is No technology means no wealth or money.

No wonder BD will remain an underdeveloped non-technology country almost forever.

Why not buy more advanced coahes from Indonesia, China or Korea?

It is a proven fact in Bangladesh rail circles that Indian Broad Gauge Coaches do not last as long as Broad Gauge ones from Indonesia, primarily because of substandard materials used. We use both ICF and Indonesian coaches.

Indian Factories like Integrated Coach Factory (ICF) Kapurthala in Punjab are famous for suiting quality of materials for specific customers (Third rate thin gauge "Murir Tin" sheet metal material for graft-ridden customers like Bangladesh who don't have standards or have no way to check for the same).

The fittings and materials for ICF coaches are all low grade - sorry to say.

Often times cheap zinc coated or chrome plated steel sheet will be substituted at ICF and other Indian factories for expensive stainless steel. How can you keep ordering from these places??

These stories are legion in Bangladesh Railway. Dhokeybaaji extreme. :lol:

Still this rail minister ba$tard will visit India for a chance to take some more bribes.

Indians know that this bribe-taking lapdog will never fail them....

Chinese coaches and locos are notorious for poor quality.
Indonesia has just copied Chinese, so all bad. Poor suspension.
Korea is expensive.

Pakistan also saw similar failure of Chinese locos and and then bought from usa
People like bilal here dont mind damaging Bangladesh's infrastructure as long as they get their cheque from the Chinese for their propaganda.

Just privatize higher education entirely and University Grant Commission should give money to research projects and talented students.

India has no tech. What tech?

Indian Diesel locos at CLW and DLW were always made from copying fifty year old Alco and (more recent) EMD tech from the US. Once DLW started making diesel electric locos, they were licensed copies of ALCO retired loco designs from US. Copies made under license were not all that good either starting out, since local Indian parts were put in.

Bangladesh is not in the same development stage (zamana) anymore where they have to buy 2nd hand or even new Indian locos - and that too, rejects from IR. Woh din ja chuka hai....

We just bought 40 Broad-gauge GT42 locos from EMD USA direct as class 6600. some already in revenue service, rest being built in the US. We will be buying from USA Progress Rail direct going forward, instead of dealing with Indian loco (or even Indian rolling stock) manufacturers.

Over 100 Meter-Gauge Hyundai-Rotem GT38AC locos from Korea also will be joining the fleet as class 3000, some already have. These Meter Gauge locos are conversion capable to Broad Gauge Trackage.

How can we expect to become a country which can manufacture good train coaches on industrial scale when govt. mentality even in 16 years ago was that, Bangladesh doesn't need railway, only road transportation will be enough! Then BNP Govt. even removed a few hundred km rail track and shut down dozens of railway stations. Up until a few years ago, all the previous govt. allowed to decay the rail track we inherited from the British period. We are still in a basic phase to rectify the past mistake and upgrade our rail line to modern standard. More than half of our rail track is still meter gauze when other South Asian countries converted them into broad gauze many decades ago. We still use diesel engines when other South Asian countries electrified their rail transport decades ago. We could not make our crucial Dhaka-Chattogram rail corridor double track yet. Without upgrading these basics, it would be a castle in the cloud if we expect our low quality workforces and poor industrial base to churn out international quality rail coaches which we can just buy from other Asian countries.

I know rail infra in some places has severe issues but there are new projects on as well, meaning the 175 KM new Dhaka Khulna Rail link.

Building infrastructure for train manufacturing is not needed by bd at this stage of your development.
India started mfg because we have a massive internal market.
Just buy from India or usa or Korea

And take a decision to either keep the meter or broad gauge . Why have both ?
Unnecessarily increases complexities in operation and maintenance of both equipment and tracks.
Just barter international brand clothes quietly with India in exchange for rail locos and carriages

No offense but Indians who haven't traveled on Chinese or even Indonesian coaches have no business bad mouthing them.

Indians judge everything outside India as the same IN INDIA.

Here is an Indonesian Coach in use in Bangladesh. They have personal cabins and also Chair-cars in use (aircraft type seating).


Please don't even start comparing Chinese coaches with Indian ones.

Just don't. Apni auqaat pe raho....

They are making Bullet trains that can go 500 KMPH.
