That's not the point. This kind of smallish patrol vessel, which can be produced in bulk, is just what a country with a large coastline and a sensitive economic zone needs. What's more, properly fitted out, such a craft can 'take down', to use your phrase, much larger vessels.

Just a reminder: patrol vessels are built for very high speed over relatively very short ranges or cruising speed with a much larger top speed and very long ranges. The first kind are usually gun boats or missile boats with a punch far above their weight classes, the second vessels built to maintain a presence for very long periods at very great distances from their bases, but not really built for much more than surveillance and a watchful presence, perhaps protecting fishery, for instance. This is clearly the latter kind.

To my mind, a perfect vessel for the patrolling and watchful presence roles, and a very sensible decision by Bangladesh. On a foundation of this and fast patrol boats, a very interesting naval structure can be built.

We dont need to buy the ship per say, all we need is for a private yard (like Western Marine) to make a deal with the Taiwanese yard for TOT to build the ship (excluding main weapons systems) in Bangladesh. We have already looked at the options, and as a low cost / high impact system it is very afforable, infact it would cost under $39m for hull/prop and depending on the weapons fit $65m - $70m each.

A build class of 6-8 would give similar fire power as 3 light frigates at lower cost. Currently just 2 Incheon class light frigates from South Korea are being negotiated and from our info will cost us just under $600m.

This makes sense - but if such a build did proceed locally that would prove to be a thorn at the side of Bangladesh-China relations. Inducting them in the Navy would cause a larger political 'flap'. China considers Taiwan to be a renegade province and anyone in any govt. offering any help (even for small things) to the KUO MINTANG govt. is seen as a betrayer.

If the weapons fit is Chinese then that could be a saving grace.

We can certainly build locally with ToT - you mentioned Western Marine which itself has experience with medium sized aluminium interceptor vessels that I know of. GFRP could be a stretch however for large superstructures. But that's what ToT is for.

In my opinion - BD Navy 'thinkers' and 'strategists' (top brass) are largely traditionalists (steel navy), and I don't know if they would be receptive to such an advanced avant garde vessel being part of the arsenal. Plus operating KaMeWa type water-jets for large vessels like these is new to Bangladesh - in fact the whole subcontinent.

This is a VISBY class equivalent and at a much more reasonable price.

The Chinese also have a small catamaran - the HOUBEI class (Type 022) but at half the size (220 tonnes as opoosed to the 500+ tonne TUO CHIANG). This design could be scaled up as well.

I like the layout of the Taiwanese vessel better, it mounts missiles sideways to save space (US practice and also on the latest Chinese/Pakistani vessels like the Azmat class).

PH is buying 2 for 400 mil

Philippines (no offense to their Navy) has been planning all sorts of naval purchases, but I see very few planned purchases coming to fruition. Their most modern vessel is two ex-USCG WHECs like our Somudro Joy/Avijan frigates, vintage late 70's. But that may be about to change.
