Azm-e-Nau-3, 10 April to 13 May.

that article would have more meaning and relevance if we were relying solely on other countries to meet our defence needs

where we can, we produce locally

i'm glad the author brought up our ''dilapidated tax collection system''......that is 100% purely the fault of the population.

If the household heads of 170 million people paid their taxes, you can imagine how much better off this country would be ---- and that with the assumption that corruption is eradicated and there is accountability

minimum yet very credible deterrant is the mission......that mission parameter will always be met. Defending nation is holy duty for all Pakistanis; not just men/women in uniform.

Pakistan standing up against extremism, militancy while paying heavy cost: Gilani

BAHAWALPUR, Apr 18 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said Pakistan is standing as a bulwark against forces of extremism and militancy while bearing a very heavy cost to its economy and prosperity. Addressing participants of the military exercise Azm-e-Nou here on Sunday. the Prime Minister said, “the world today finds Pakistan standing as a bulwark against forces of extremism and militancy.”

It is in this struggle where nation pledges to support armed forces in spirit, with its youth and its entire resources, he added.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan and its armed forces are fully committed in a fierce struggle on its western border and are continuing to retain their capability to deal with all possible threats in the region.

He said he was sure that the feat could be rivaled by no military in the world.

He said the exercise was the epoch making professional activity of Pakistan Army which marks the culmination of a year long training process conceived and executed by it.

He congratulated the participants on the commendable achievement reflecting par excellence standards of the armed forces.

Gilani said Pakistan is faced with multiple challenges and opportunities as it is located at the crossroads of competing interests.

As a responsible member of the comity of nations, he said, Pakistan desires peace and security both within and beyond.

The national security paradigm of Pakistan evolved within the context of Pakistan’s own geography; history and culture determines the contours of national and military response, he noted.

The Prime Minister said under the current global and regional environment, maintenance of peace and security is a key strategic objective of Pakistan armed forces.

He underlined the need for the highest state of preparedness encompassing the full scale of capabilities as it remains the guarantor of peace and security.

Gilani pointed out that Pakistan’s military strategy is based on credible minimum deterrence.

“Our democratic system, economic potential, vibrant population, national unity, consensus and Pakistan armed forces all provide strategic stability against all possible threats to our great country,” he added.

“Today’s spectacular display of military prowess would not only warm the hearts of all Pakistanis, but would also reflect the capacity to defend the motherland and to maintain peace and security in the region,” he added.

He apprised about his recent interaction with the leaders of other nations saying he received applause and admiration for the commitment of Pakistani people and the achievements of the armed forces for the success in Swat and Waziristan.

The sacrifices that the armed forces of Pakistan, the law enforcing agencies and the patriotic people of Pakistan have made to safeguard the sovereignty and independence of motherland have not gone unnoticed, he stated.

He urged the world leaders to come forward and share the responsibility in helping them fight the menace of terrorism for global peace.

“The leaders of international community have assured me of their support in military and other spheres to succeed in this war on terror where Pakistan is indeed a frontline state,” he added.

“Pakistan has refused to budge to the inimical forces and unreasonable voices of bigotry,” he said.

“I wish to deeply appreciate and thank our valiant soldiers for their sacrifices in the defense of Pakistan. The nation is proud of them all. Having witnessed the military capabilities and dedication, it is very reassuring for me that our integrity and security is in safe hands,” he added.

Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Tariq Majid, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Noman Bashir and Chief of Air Staff Rao Qamar Suleman, federal ministers and members of parliament watched the military exercise conducted in the desert of Bahawalpur.

Well atleast one mystery gets confirmed, that we do have the A-100 MBRL system and its operational. Most probably the SH-1 155m guns deal would also be true as rumors of these 2 systems being inducted came at the same time.

By the looks of these exercises, it seems PA has made numerous advancements in its command and control structure and getting more net centric and will do more with passage of time.

Few things they should look into:

1. New assault rifle for the troops with same 7.62mm caliber, good option HK417
2. A decent good IFV
3. New ATGM system with top attack capability, should get in collaboration with Turks as their new ATGM system is capable enough.
4. SAW weapon system supplementing the assault rifle and the MG3 machine guns, good option is the H&K MG4, which comes in the 7.62 caliber
5. Troops carrying capable ATGM system, like the Javelin system, again better to get in collaboration with Turks as they are making something like that.
6. As usual an Attack helicopter with ATGM of atleast 6-8 KM standoff range.
7. Very light man portable UAV systems for front line troops, so that they have independent surveillance capability of their area and the troops they are facing. Should be given at unit level size.

I know its a long list & costs money, but its doable if we start now and with passage of time slowly equip the troops as some of the things can be produced in house. First equip the strike formations, and then slowly equip the other ones which require.

With such above systems, PA will become one hell of a force with very good firepower.

sir, as far as I know the MG4 is 5.56, is there any other 7.62 chambered variant? The problem with a western SAW weapon is that it can only be 5.56 caliber, a russian weapon would be 7.62x39 but then it would not have the penetration power.

Close to India, Pakistan shows military might
By CHRIS BRUMMITT (AP) – 1 hour ago
CHOLISTAN DESERT, Pakistan — Fighter jets strafed mock enemy positions and tanks rumbled across this eastern desert Sunday in a display of military might signaling Pakistan's readiness to face traditional foe India even as it battles Taliban militants on its opposite flank.
While India and Pakistan regularly carry out army drills, the demonstration close to the Indian border was part of Pakistan's biggest military exercises since 1989, when the army was celebrating its role in ousting the Soviet Union from Afghanistan.
This time around, the exercises follow successful operations in the northwest against extremists that have improved the image of the army as a fighting force after its popularity plunged during the military-backed rule of former President Gen. Pervez Musharraf. For a domestic audience, the army was emphasizing this battlefield role, analysts said.
"It is meant to signal internally that we are back to where we belong," said Moeed Yusuf, from the Washington DC-based thinktank, United States Institute of Peace. "For the world, it signals that India remains the principal threat."
There was no immediate comment from New Delhi. India generally refrains from commenting on such scheduled exercises.
Sunday's exercises were meant to replicate a counter offensive against an invading ground force. They included 21 bombing runs by various Pakistani jets, displays of anti-aircraft weaponry, tanks moving in formation and round after round of heavy artillery.
Those watching — including the prime minister, the country's military leaders and politicians — clapped as targets were hit some 2,000 meters away across the shimmering, dusty Cholistan Desert. The loudest round of applause was for when an unmanned drone was shot out of the sky by a barrage of anti-aircraft fire.
Pakistan has fought three inconclusive wars with India since the two countries were formed from the then British-ruled Asian subcontinent in 1949. The army, which has ruled the country directly or indirectly for most of the time since then, has relentlessly focused on threat from India, which has roughly twice as many troops.
Alarmed at Taliban and al-Qaida safe havens on the western border close to Afghanistan, the United States has urged the country to concentrate less on the threat from India. It wants to see more troops deployed in the northwest and more training in counterinsurgency, not conventional war fought in the desert.
Those concerns have been allayed somewhat over the last 18 months during which the Pakistan army has moved forcefully against militants in several regions close to the Afghan border. In public at least, U.S. officials have praised the army's actions and rarely berate it as was common two years ago.
After watching a display clearly aimed at the threat from India, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani several times mentioned the successes in the northwest. "The world sees Pakistan as a bulwark against extremism and militancy. It is in this struggle the nation has pledged to support the armed forces. Pakistan is fully committed to the struggle in the west," he said.

Islamabad, Apr 18 (PTI) As Pakistan's armed forces today staged a massive drill in the Cholistan desert, close to the Indian border, the country's civil and military leadership said Islamabad's defence strategy is based on credible minimum deterrence and had "no offensive design" against anyone.

Addressing a gathering that witnessed manoeuvres by tanks, combat jets and helicopter gunships, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said Pakistan?s military strategy is based on "credible minimum deterrence".

Pakistan Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, in his address, said, "Pakistan harbours no offensive design against anyone but self-defence is our inherent right. We will protect and defend Pakistan at all costs."

The drill in the desert was part of the Azm-e-Nau (New Resolve)-3 exercise, Pakistan?s largest ever wargame for which the military has mobilised nearly 50,000 troops, tanks, artillery and jets.

Nops, that's a little bit bigger and much more complicated UAv system.

I meant the below one, as these are small, man portable, easily launched, easily recovered, easy maintenance, electric rechargeable batteries and electric run, troops in the field can easily recharge it, best suited for unit sized formations which are looking for a specific front. This one is too small, little bit bigger will do the job, as it can go for 2-3 KM range and will cover vast area which needs to be under reconnaissance. 3-4 systems per unit, would be enough for the unit to keep an eye on its sector of responsibility and during counter attacks or under attack by enemy, unit commander can see what's happening on the battle front and can make decisions.

below one is the German UAV:

And this one is a project by NUST students, so if finances provided, we can make these very cheaply in house.
