Because Australia needs to stand alone against Indonesia, but not against China.

I'm going to put it bluntly, if we count the combat capability, the US is 10,000, Australia is probably 20. So, for China, there is no difference between 10,000 and 10,020. Because the margin of error in the US is probably more than 1,000.

All we care about is whether the US is pulling out of the nuclear non-proliferation agreement. As for what weapons Australia got, no one cares. Because Australia is just a branch of the US, there is no need to respond to Australia alone.

Australia is not going to fight against China alone. Neither is the UK going to fight China alone. Both the USA client states will only fight China if the USA is part of it. Australia would barely be able to challenge Indonesia militarily, let alone China. How can Australia's military (ranked 19th most powerful in the world) challenge China's military (Ranked 3rd most powerful). Australia's military has 1/5th the firepower of China's military. China would destroy the Royal Navy in days in the South China sea. The Australian Navy would most likely only last a day.

Anti-china fanatics seem to be trying to justify Australia's move by portraying China as angry. In fact, public opinion in China is full of joy. Two of China's concerns are limited to whether the United States will abandon nuclear non-proliferation, and the Morrison administration's fanatical pro-American leanings.

Delivery of the 12 submarines could take until 2050. The US and UK stabbed the French hard. The rift between the United States and the European Union is widening rapidly. Trust in the United States in France and Germany will continue to decline. Indonesia feels most directly threatened, and its distrust of the United States will deepen. The rest of the world finally realised that they were different from the Anglo-Saxons. Indians will wonder why they can't get the F35 and Japanese will wonder why they are so restricted by Americans.

Biden must be crazy to trade such a huge immediate geopolitical setback for a small military help that is likely to result over the next 30 years.

Australia's sub force is something not to underestimate, they will bring havoc on China's naval fleets along with launching missiles undetected somewhere in the Pacific Ocean thats vast. China also fears our own sub force as well. Do not doubt it and China has mentioned about it in the past and still do.
