pretty sure china already considers Australia to be just an extension of the US. so these subs would really just be viewed as the US getting a few more subs. not too much has changed, except apparently india got thrown out of the club. considering us, Australia and uk already have defence treaties with each other.

What’s wrong with copying well established designs of a military superpower?

Military weapons are there to achieve strategic objectives of a country. China getting militarily stronger is the only objective. You acquire those weapons by any means necessary. These are not iPhones.

I am not saying its wrong almost all countries copied someone technologies in past such as West/USA copied lots military techs after WW2 from Germany Operation paperclip, i am trying correct falsehood of @Tai Hai Chen saying that Type 95 is far better than Virginia class with knowing much about both boats

Although It is not clear how much the long term strategic gain this new alliance is hoping to achieve, it has certainly achieve its goal of angering France and EU by terminating the submarine contact in such a humiliating manner.

If Australia buying 12 diesel submarine can be seen as less provocative as they are more of a defensive weapon, acquiring nuclear one will have a clear offensive stance due to its range and attack armaments. The whole pack has a "Arming Australia" theme and will ruin the relationship with China, who happens to be the largest buyer of Australia's product. If the embargo of some small industries like wine or seafood is capable of causing some pain, the forthcoming reduction of iron ore purchase from China will be catastrophe for Australian economy, to put it mildly. There is simply no country in the world can replace China in terms of demand for raw material and agriculture products. We will start to see the economical consequences like high unemployment and declined living standard in the coming decades.

US will be the obvious winner from the face value by securing a massive contract for GE and Huntington-Ingalls industries - the nuclear submarine builders. Over the long term this move will cost the US dearly. It will push both France and Germany towards China as they can finally conclude how much trust is left between Angelo and old Europe. EU could respond by accelerating the EU and China Investment Agreement, which will bond EU and china even more deeply from economical point of view.

Australia runs their own submarines the Collins class. Difference is the new subs will be nuclear powered.

This is a strategic problem, not a tactical one.First, what is the American strategy?

War, the better strategy is to make Australia a military base for the US. The US can put nuclear silos in Australia and build more air bases, naval ports. It is a waste for Australia to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on 12 submarines.

Cold war, the United States should first withdraw gradually from the Chinese market and rebuild its manufacturing industry at home. Australia should join the US-led global industrial chain and perhaps build a large steel industry to supply metals to the US. This would require more infrastructure and buying submarines would still be a waste.

Competition and cooperation, military conflict is unlikely. China still needs 4 billion tons of steel for its iron cycle. Australia has about five years to cushion itself against a sharp fall in demand for iron ore. It's crazy to spend money on submarines at a time when Australia needs to invest upfront for its future economic transformation.

So buying submarines was a completely inexplicable move.

My guess are three possibilities.

The first is that the US is trying to create a sense of threat to China in order to increase its leverage in the sino-US negotiations.

The second is that the US will release the news of providing submarines to Taiwan next, again to increase the leverage.

Third, the US military-industrial complex needs money.
