What's new

Assassination of Ziaur Rahman

from one of the above posts, i get the impression that anti-indian sentiments were rising by around 1977, just 6 years after your independence

please explain this phenomenon

Actually anti india sentiment was brewing just after independence . after liberation indian soldiers took away every military hardware and and household equipments from cantonment by truck . people were just have to watch there were no way to protect or protect . the major abdul jalil protested this and was arrested and became the fast raj bondhi . this was the turning point . and after liberation they start farraka barrage as 'test' but their 'test' never ended . India tried to made us their subordinate country which was not the people dream.more importently we knew it is india who is going to be the main problem of independent bangladesh .during liberation war one sector commander were asking his fellow freedom fighter ''do you know who is going to be the main threat/problem for Bangladesh ? the fighter war mum ,them kicking the mud the commander told india india is going to be the biggest threat for bangladesh ''. this is the reality in short . thanks

Important or impotent? I am confused.

Why was that? People regretted his actions?

People regretted his actions/inactions after the war, but did not regret about the role he played to make people aware of the discriminations east Pakistanis were subjected to since the creation of Pakistan.

That was Zia ul Haq of Pakistan sending trees to Saudi Arab

But, President Zia of BD became very popular with the Saudi Royal family because he helped the Saudi King to crush a revolt by Irani Hajis. He advised saudi generals at that time, although he himself was a Haji and was staying in a State Guest House.

May be he did but it is also very true that Zia-ur-Rehman of Bangladesh planted some trees (neem tree) in maidan e arafat with his own hand because he realized that this tree would not die due to harsh weather system of Saudi Arabia.

Ershad recent maneuver towards Bharat Dalali and coaliting with Al give some idea that he may have been involved with assassination. If BNP come back to power some time in future then there should be neutral investigation to find out the culprit.

And I would beg to differ from you here. It's easy to see everything in terms of black & white. Mujib and Zia had different approaches in running the country. Mujib was bringing changes to BD's india-centric foreign policy later in his term. He initiated forging good relations with Muslim countries to help BD's economy, as india apparently was not interested. He did create BAKSAL to solidify his hold in power. Nothing wrong with that. BD needed a strong dictator at that point in time. Maybe things would have went the "Chinese way", with a one-party rule and a socialist state.

Just because Zia was a better leader does not mean Mujib was evil. Again, try not to use the black and white approach.

Then why did he kill Siraj Sikdar who was a leftist and leaned more towards the chinese way of life?
Your right, we can't look at everything in black and white, but thats no excuse to justify who deliberately put his agendas first rather than a country's. Some authors and writers even compared his traits with that of Hitlers and Stalin. Let me copy paste you something that I think describes best of Mujib's regime :
Early sign of Fasicm

Powerful and continuing nationalism
Disdain for human rights
Identification of enemies/scapegoats
Supremacy of the military
Controlled mass media
Obsession with national security
Religion and government are intertwined
Corporate power is protected
Labor power is suppressed
Didsdain for intellectuals and the arts
Obsession with crime and punishment
Rampant cronyism and corruption
Fraudulent elections
Rampant sexism
Early Warning Signs of Fascism

If you look thru history books and talk to people during the 1972-1975 era, everyone would describe this elements in detail
