Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said it would be “inappropriate” to ask who was the more barbarous out of Israel and Hitler, in comments likely to put renewed strain on ties with the Jewish state.

The comments come less than a week after Turkey appointed a foreign policy advisor to the prime minister as ambassador to Israel, sealing the normalisation of diplomatic relations after a six-year partial rupture.

“I don´t approve of what Hitler did, and neither do I approve of what Israel has done. When it´s a question of so many people dying, it´s inappropriate to ask who was the more barbarous,” Erdogan said in an interview with Israeli television on Monday night.

The relationship between the two countries plunged to an all time low after an Israeli commando raid on a Gaza-bound ship in 2010 that killed 10 Turks, prompting Ankara to expel the Israeli ambassador and freeze all defence ties.

But the two sides have been working to bring cooperation back to former levels and are holding talks on building an ambitious pipeline project to pump Israeli gas to Turkey and Europe.

Nevertheless, considerable tensions remain with Erdogan presenting himself as a champion of the Palestinians and regularly meeting with Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal.

Israel, the United States and the European Union all view Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, as a terrorist organisation.

It is not the first time that Erdogan has referred to the World War II Nazi leader when dealing with Israel.

After the 2010 raid, he accused Israel of “keeping Hitler´s spirit alive”.

And during the 2014 Gaza War, in which 2,251 Palestinians were killed, according to the UN, he said Israelis “have no conscience, no honour, no pride. They curse Hitler day and night, but they have surpassed Hitler in barbarism”.

He has accused the Jewish state of carrying out “genocide” on the Palestinians.

In Monday´s comments to Israel´s Channel 2 television, Erdogan said he was “well aware” of the sensitivities associated with Hitler, blamed for the deaths of some six million Jews.

But he said he found it “impossible to forget the hundreds, the thousands of people who died when (the Israeli military) struck Gaza”.

@HAKIKAT

Mr Erdogan is very tough, but maybe he should make a much wiser foreign policy.
Israel is part of the Middle East , which he can't avoid if he wants to build a important role for Turkey in this area.

Agreed that it is what he should do but he won't because he has a bigger plan.

It looks to me that day after day Erdogan is turning what was a secular democracy into an Islamic dictatorship.

But he plans to obtain the support of his people and to get that result he uses the old trick that consists of finding a "common enemy" to gather every one.

Israel is the first "natural enemy" of an Islamic dictatorship followed by western democracies.

IMHO we've spotted a secret admirer of Hitler.

You have to decide, Natioalist, Jihadist, Islamist ?......

Having a confusion of terms ? ....Can you even find Turkey on the world map ?

You might claim that "In Turkey, when you look at the sun it looks in purple color.".....and if i object to your claim...that makes me a blind nationalist ?

Well considering the way and the speed things are deteriorating in Turkey that might indeed be the future : nationalist => islamist and then jihadist.

It's up to the Turkish people to decide whenever they want to follow that crazy man or to come back to a descent leader.

But with that many political opponents eliminated now Erdogan has no roadblock and will continue his path I'm afraid.

Turkey will continue to fight against PKK, ISIS, FETO terrorists. And will be critical, (may even orchestrate assasinations within Europe) of Europe, for their support for terrorists.

We don't care about the EU crying babies.....anyways, this EU-Turkey thing will end in the 2017. Then there will be no reason for EU to meddle in to our domestic affairs.

The EU-Turkey thing is already dead. The way Turkey evolves there is nothing we can do in common a part for a very limited situation where the win-win is 100% sure.

Turkey will continued its drift from Europe and increase its anti Israel stance and will finish closer to the middle-east.

That is a major strategic move where Europe loses a little but where Turkey may lose a lot. Time will tell.

- We didn't drift from Europe....but Europe pushed us away.
- Relations with Israel normalizing,
Turkey names new ambassador to Israel.
Israel appoints first ambassador to Turkey since Gaza spat

Closer to middle-east ? Close to which country in ME, since there is no such union in the middle-east.

IMO, we don't need to be in such a club. We need to maintain balanced relations with every world power. I mean, we should deal with EU and Russia in a similar fashion.

Does that mean that you're going to shot our fighters ?

Yeah but at the same time you have anti Israel speeches like the one at the origin of this thread.
Erdogan knows he has to be careful when dealing with Israel because if one day he crosses the line, Turkey would at risk to be kicked out Nato and that would not be good for him (at least for now).

Well, you are right to some extent. ERDOGAN seems to be playing the Islamic caliph card every and then. I don't know what he is trying to prove. It seems he wants to rebrand himself as the leader of the Islamic world and a religious superpower , However it's unfortunate that he can't, simply because Saudi Arabia already holds that title by far, even if there was no Saudi Arabia, Iran will be better suited for that role.
So even if I think he is only trying to play the religious Islamic card to cement his power and rule, I think he doesn't need to do that this way. He is already actively supporting terrorist radical Islamic groups like Muslim brotherhood and Hamas. This is not healthy for a secular country like Turkey. This man might bring trouble for Turkey in future. his foreign policy leaves alot to be desired.

I'm no fan of Erdogan and think he is evil - but at least he has a foreign policy.

What's the foreign policy of the UK? Never mind, I'll go ask the Americans

Why would we shot a NATO aircraft ?

I differ in opinion. Turkey vetoes Israel's acceptance to NATO...if you guys care so much about Israel. Kick Turkey out of the NATO. (Hımm, your affinity to Israel catch my eye.)

And you say that we're the "crying babies".

Mate, supporting PKK, PYD, FETÖ terrorist organizations against Turkey.
Only closing a single chapter (out of 35) in 15 years in the assession talks.
Not ending demands of pulling our troops out of Cyprus and recognize Greek territorial waters.
Meddling into Turkish affairs in every given opportunity.

I mean what where you expecting ? And we are not crying about that all, Erdo already said we will have a referendum in 2017 to end the assession talks with EU. We are ready to deal with the situation.

I don't think both EU and Turkey has much to lose. Maybe only lose is.... that EU army that you guys talk about. Turkey has the largest army in NATO after US and could have been a fine addition. But establishment of EU army is controversial, so nothing really to lose.
