Nikki Haley was an elected governor of South Carolina. She’s a politician. I doubt self-respect is an issue with her.

I guess she changed her name much before she got elected governor of south Carolina so yes the issue was pretty much there. It also depends on the community. Sikhs in USA especially girls feel the pressure to gel in and they do change their names and do other stuff to get integrated however Sardars in UK do not feel that pressure from the society and hence retain their identity and name.

Nikki Haley is an outlier. These days most immigrants retain their names and are proud of their heritage, including Indians. They are thriving in US without compromising their identity.

The debate has gone off the rails. It’s fine to criticize Haley for her positions, her dumb statements and childish threats, her working for Trump, etc. But it’s not okay to use her Indianess against her for it, especially if it has nothing to do with the UNGA vote, and doesn’t identify herself as such.
